Protect your Secret Recovery Phrase, then verify the address or transaction on the Ledger signer’s own screen before sharing or approving it. The screen and physical approval step are safeguards—not a guarantee against stolen recovery credentials, deception, or an interaction you do not understand.
Secure the device and its recovery phrase
Ledger describes the Secret Recovery Phrase as the human-readable backup from which private keys are derived. Someone who obtains it may be able to restore access to the associated assets, so treat it as a root secret, not as an ordinary password. Ledger’s security guidance advises keeping it private and physically protected.

- Get the device and companion app through sources you can authenticate. Ledger’s security checklist directs users to its official Ledger Wallet download page.
- Choose a difficult-to-guess device PIN.
- Write down the recovery phrase and store it in a protected physical location. Do not photograph it, save it to cloud storage, or enter it into a website, app, message, or support conversation.
- If packaging is damaged, do not use the device; contact official support. Packaging strips vary by model and are not proof that a device is authentic or tamper-proof.
Verify a receiving address before sharing it
- Request the address through the wallet workflow you intend to use. Connect and unlock the signer, and open the relevant asset app if prompted.
- Compare the full address on the connected interface with the address displayed on the Ledger device. Do not rely only on the computer or phone screen.
- Share the address only if the two match. If you are using a third-party software wallet, Ledger recommends first sending a small amount and confirming it arrives.
Review the transaction on the signer before approving
Start the transaction in Ledger Wallet or the third-party interface you chose. The connected device initiates the transaction and communicates with the blockchain; Ledger says its Secure Element controls the secure screen and performs signing. The signer’s display is therefore the place to check what you are authorizing, rather than assuming the connected screen tells the whole story. See Ledger’s explanation of how its hardware wallets (signers) work.

- Compare those details with the action you meant to take. Check that the recipient or contract and amount make sense for that action.
- Approve only when the displayed details match your intent and you understand them. Reject the request if there is a mismatch or an important detail is unclear.
Know whether the transaction is readable
Clear Signing presents a readable representation of a transaction’s intent and fields. Ledger says it is available in its integrated flows; support outside those flows depends on the dApp. Ledger’s Clear Signing explainer describes Transaction Check as an additional alerting layer that can analyze for potential threats. Treat an alert as one signal—not proof that an unflagged transaction is safe.

Blind signing means approving data that cannot be clearly interpreted. As Ledger puts it, “Blind signing means approving a transaction without being able to clearly interpret its contents.” A raw hash, generic data prompt, or blind-signing warning does not give you the same readable basis for checking the action. Prefer a route that supports Clear Signing when available. If readable details are unavailable, use an independent transaction simulator where appropriate, and do not proceed unless you can verify the intended effect. Ledger’s guidance on blind signing explains the distinction and risk.

A readable prompt helps you assess what is being requested, but it does not establish that a contract is safe. Ledger’s security checklist recommends these additional precautions:
