Quarter over quarter (QoQ) compares a metric in one three-month quarter with the same metric in the immediately preceding quarter. To calculate the percentage change, subtract the earlier quarter’s value from the current quarter’s value, divide by the earlier value, and multiply by 100.

What does quarter over quarter mean?

Quarter over quarter, often shortened to QoQ or written Q/Q, describes a sequential comparison between two consecutive quarters. It can measure a change in revenue, profit, spending, customers, units sold, or another consistently defined figure.

For example, a company might compare its revenue in Q2 with its revenue in Q1. QoQ shows how the metric changed between those periods; by itself, it does not explain the cause or establish a long-term trend.

How do you calculate QoQ growth?

Use this formula for the percentage change:

QoQ percentage change = ((current-quarter value − previous-quarter value) ÷ previous-quarter value) × 100

Suppose revenue increases from $400,000 in Q1 to $500,000 in Q2. The calculation is (($500,000 − $400,000) ÷ $400,000) × 100 = 25%, so revenue increased 25% QoQ. These figures illustrate the arithmetic; they are not a reported company result.

For a meaningful comparison, use the same metric definition, units, currency, and period basis in both quarters. A positive result indicates an increase; a negative result indicates a decrease. If the previous-quarter value is zero, the ordinary percentage formula is undefined because it requires division by zero. Report the absolute change instead, or clearly explain a different comparison method.

How should you interpret a QoQ change?

QoQ can make a recent shift visible sooner than an annual comparison, but a single quarter is only one data point. Review several consecutive quarters and consider whether a business change, acquisition, accounting change, reporting-period difference, revision, or unusual event affected either value.

Seasonality can also distort a sequential comparison. A retailer, for instance, may have a stronger holiday quarter than the quarter immediately before it; that change does not necessarily mean the business is on a lasting growth path. The Corporate Finance Institute notes that mismatched points in time and events can distort comparisons (CFI’s QoQ explanation).

QoQ vs. year over year: What is the difference?

QoQ compares a quarter with the one immediately before it. Year over year (YoY) compares a quarter with the same quarter one year earlier. They answer different questions: QoQ highlights a recent sequential change, while YoY provides a comparison against the corresponding point in the prior year.

YoY can help account for recurring seasonal patterns, but neither measure is conclusive on its own. For a seasonal business, consider both measures and identify the exact base periods. For example, Q2 QoQ compares Q2 with Q1; Q2 YoY compares Q2 with Q2 of the prior year. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis explains seasonal adjustment in its GDP FAQ.

Is quarter-over-quarter growth annualized?

Not necessarily. A raw quarterly change measures movement over that quarter. An annualized rate expresses what the growth rate would be over a year if the quarterly pace continued and compounded for four quarters. The two figures are not interchangeable.

For U.S. GDP, the BEA presents percent changes for most quarterly estimates at annual rates to make them easier to compare with annual growth. Its compounding convention is ((later-quarter level ÷ earlier-quarter level)4 − 1) × 100. In the BEA’s FAQ example, a 1.0% quarterly increase corresponds to about 4.0% at an annual rate. That is a hypothetical continuation convention, not a claim that the economy actually grew 4.0% over the year. Some volatile series are reported at quarterly rates instead; check the release labels and footnotes. See the BEA explanation of annualized quarterly estimates.

These are U.S. GDP reporting conventions, not a universal rule for business reports or other countries. BEA GDP series are seasonally adjusted to remove recurring patterns such as weather, holidays, and production schedules, and estimates can be revised as more source data become available. See the BEA FAQ on GDP estimates when interpreting a particular release.

What to check before comparing two QoQ figures

  • Metric definition: Confirm both figures measure the same thing using the same accounting basis.
  • Period: Check that the quarters cover comparable reporting lengths.
  • Seasonal adjustment: Establish whether both figures are adjusted on the same basis.
  • Rate convention: Determine whether each percentage is a raw quarterly change or an annualized rate.
  • One-off effects and revisions: Look for unusual events, acquisitions, or revised figures that may affect the comparison.
  • Comparison period: When putting QoQ beside YoY, state which quarters each figure uses as its base.
