Multi-currency pricing lets an online merchant show prices in customers’ familiar currencies—and, when its payment setup supports it, charge them in those currencies too. It can make prices easier to understand, but displaying a local amount is not the same as processing a local-currency payment, and neither guarantees higher sales. A sound setup matches target markets, checkout capabilities, conversion costs, pricing controls, refunds, and accounting.
What multi-currency pricing means
Multi-currency pricing is the practice of presenting a product’s price in more than one currency. A complete local-currency experience can let a customer browse, pay, and receive a refund in the selected currency, while the merchant records sales and receives payouts in different currencies.
Keep three currency roles distinct: the currency shown and charged to the customer (presentment or charge currency), the currency of the customer’s payment method, and the currency in which the provider settles funds to the merchant. Shopify separately describes store, local/presentment, and payout currencies; Stripe documents payment-method, charge, and settlement currencies. See Shopify’s currency definitions and Stripe’s supported currencies documentation.
Display is not the same as charging
A store may display a converted local price yet switch to its default currency at checkout if its gateway configuration does not support local-currency processing. In that case, the customer’s card issuer may charge a foreign-exchange fee if the charge currency differs from the card’s currency. Stripe also converts charges when the charge and settlement currencies differ, according to the configured service. Check Shopify’s checkout-currency guidance and Stripe’s currency documentation for the specific setup.

How multi-currency pricing can support sales
Showing a familiar currency reduces the mental effort of translating a price and can make it easier to compare with local alternatives. A consistent local-currency checkout can also avoid a late currency change that surprises customers. These are plausible ways to reduce friction, not evidence that every store will increase conversion or revenue: results depend on the market, checkout, payment methods, pricing, and costs.
Stripe says local-currency conversion can improve conversion and authorization rates, but this is a provider statement, not a guarantee. Stripe’s Adaptive Pricing page reports an average 17.8% increase in international revenue; the page surfaced for this figure does not state a publication year or enough methodology to treat it as an independently verified or typical lift. Do not use that result as a forecast for your store. See Stripe’s Adaptive Pricing FAQ.

Choose how local prices are set
There is no single best pricing method. Choose between following exchange rates and setting prices for each market, based on how much price stability and control your business needs.
| Method | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic conversion | Converts the base price using an exchange rate. Shopify says its automatic calculation can include a conversion fee and applicable rounding. | Less manual upkeep, but displayed prices can move with rates and may differ from a simple mid-market conversion. See Shopify’s international pricing fees guidance. |
| Manual exchange rate | Uses a merchant-set rate to make local prices more stable. | Requires monitoring and cost modeling. Shopify notes the rate can change between authorization and manual capture, while the actual payment conversion occurs at market rates. See Shopify’s fee and rate guidance. |
| Market-specific adjustment or fixed price | Applies a percentage adjustment or sets a product price for a particular market; rounding can shape price endings. | Offers more control over local positioning but requires market-by-market decisions and maintenance. See Shopify Markets pricing controls. |
Decide whether local prices should track a base-currency price or reflect separate market positioning, costs, and preferred price endings. An exchange-rate calculation alone cannot answer that business question.

How to roll out local-currency pricing
- Choose target markets. Identify the countries and currencies worth supporting, and establish which payment methods customers in those markets expect.
- Verify the complete payment path. Confirm that your platform and gateway support both local-currency display and a local-currency charge for your country, plan, products, and checkout. Shopify’s current guidance says compatible local-currency processing depends on Shopify Payments or Adyen as the primary gateway; other provider setups may show local prices but revert to the store currency at checkout. Check Shopify’s eligibility and checkout guidance before enabling it.
- Select a pricing method. Choose automatic conversion, a manual rate, or market-specific adjusted or fixed prices. Set rounding intentionally and model processing and conversion costs separately. Shopify’s controls and fee explanations are in its Markets pricing documentation and international pricing fees guidance.
- Test the customer journey end to end. Check the country selector, product and cart prices, shipping destination, checkout currency, authorization and capture, order confirmation, refund, and reports. A shipping market or checkout restriction can affect which currency appears. Shopify describes these conditions in its checkout-currency guidance.
- Reconcile and review. Compare the customer-facing order currency with the store’s reporting currency and the gateway’s settlement records. Shopify notes that order values may be converted back using live rates and that gateway settlement values may need to be reconciled directly with the payment gateway. See Shopify’s developer guidance on currency and markets.
Understand the costs, exchange-rate risk, and refunds
Separate processing fees from currency conversion
Payment processing charges and currency-conversion costs are distinct and both may apply. Depending on the provider and pricing method, conversion costs may be included in the displayed price or deducted from proceeds. Fees, supported currencies, and eligibility depend on the merchant’s location and setup, so check current provider terms rather than relying on a universal rate. Shopify discusses these costs in its international pricing fees guidance.
For Stripe Adaptive Pricing specifically, Stripe’s support page currently states a 2–4% customer conversion fee. That figure is feature-specific, is stated on a page with no publication year, and should not be read as a standard fee for every multi-currency arrangement. Confirm current terms at Stripe’s Adaptive Pricing FAQ.

Rates can change between a sale and a refund
Shopify says conversion uses the rate at the time of a transaction such as capture, refund, or chargeback. If the rate changes after a sale, the merchant’s converted proceeds or refund amount can differ from the original converted amount. Shopify recommends refunding the full amount paid in the customer’s local currency; the merchant’s converted refund may still differ from the proceeds initially received. See Shopify’s guidance on currency conversion and refunds.

For example, Shopify Markets is relevant when you want market-level pricing controls within Shopify, but gateway eligibility determines whether local pricing also becomes a local-currency charge. Stripe supports more than 135 charge currencies according to its current supported-currencies documentation, but charge-currency coverage alone does not establish that every merchant can settle in every currency or use every local payment method. Check Shopify’s checkout requirements and Stripe’s currency documentation against your own account and country.
