An over/under bet—also called a total—asks whether a specified result will finish above or below a sportsbook’s line. The result might be both teams’ combined score, one team’s score, or a named statistic or game segment. The market label and sportsbook rules determine exactly what counts.
What does an over/under bet mean?
You are betting on the amount counted, not directly on which team wins. For a game total, that usually means adding both teams’ points, runs, or goals and comparing the sum with the posted number. Sportsbooks may also offer team totals, player-stat totals, or totals for a half, quarter, or other period. DraftKings describes a total as a wager on the number of “points, runs, or goals in a game” and notes that totals can cover team or player statistics too: DraftKings: What is a total or Over/Under wager?
A total is different from a point spread or handicap. A total concerns how much is scored or counted; a spread adjusts one side’s result relative to the other.
How do over and under lines settle?
Compare the final counted result with the line. If the result is higher, Over wins; if it is lower, Under wins. For example, with a 7.5 total, Over wins at 8 or more and Under wins at 7 or fewer. Because the counted result is a whole number in this example, it cannot land exactly on 7.5.

A whole-number line can land exactly on the number. At 9, a counted result of 9 may be graded as a push, meaning the stake is returned in the cited operator examples. The sportsbook’s rules govern whether and how a push is handled.
Quarter-number totals
Some Asian total markets use quarter-number lines, such as 1.25 goals. Under the cited Wheeling Island/West Virginia rules, the stake is split evenly between the adjacent whole- and half-number bets. The final settlement can therefore combine outcomes rather than being a single win or loss. This describes those rules specifically; it is not a universal format or settlement method. Check what the total covers
Before placing a wager, read the full market label. A total may refer to the whole game, one team, an individual player statistic, or a defined portion of the event. The period matters: a quarter total is not the same market as a full-game total, even if the displayed number looks similar.
- What is counted? Identify the combined score, team score, player statistic, or other named result.
- Which period applies? Check whether the market covers the full event, a half, a quarter, or another segment.
- How is the line written? Whole, half, and quarter numbers can settle differently.
- What are the settlement terms? Check the operator’s rules for pushes, voids, overtime, and any market-specific exceptions.
- Which rules apply to you? House rules and market availability can vary by sportsbook and location.
Does overtime count?
There is no single overtime rule for all totals. A sportsbook may include overtime for one market and exclude it for another. For example, Fanatics’ Missouri house rules include overtime in whole-game and second-half totals but exclude it from fourth-quarter totals. Those are Missouri-specific operator rules, not a general rule for every sportsbook. Consult the applicable Fanatics Missouri house rules.

Soccer illustrates why it helps to distinguish the period carefully. DraftKings’ U.S. soccer guidance says ordinary soccer markets, including over/under goals, use regular time, including stoppage time, and exclude extra time and shootouts unless the market says otherwise. In the Laws of the Game, stoppage time is time added to the two regular halves to account for time lost; extra time and penalty shootouts are separate procedures used to determine a winner after a drawn match.
