During play, bookmakers and betting exchanges can update odds, add or suspend markets, and accept or reject wagers under their own rules. A live broadcast may lag behind the event, so what you see on screen may not be the latest information available to a betting provider or another bettor.
How live betting works
A bettor chooses an available market and submits a wager while the event is underway. A market might concern the overall result or a particular event within the match, but the choices, prices, and rules depend on the provider and sport. The defining feature is when the wager is placed—not whether the customer is watching a video stream.
Providers use event information to adjust prices, suspend markets, and settle wagers. A sportsbook posts its own prices, commonly called fixed odds. A betting exchange facilitates wagers between participants. Those formats can differ in available markets, suspensions, acceptance and processing, and settlement rules; neither is universally faster or fairer. Check the provider’s published rules for the specific market. The UK Gambling Commission’s in-play betting guidance explains how prices and markets can change, and Betfair’s Sportsbook Rules and Regulations illustrate provider-specific terms.
Why live betting odds and markets change
As the event develops, the information relevant to a market changes. A score, a player’s status, or the time remaining can affect the price or whether a market remains available. Providers may suspend a market while an important event is unfolding or while they verify information. A submitted wager is not necessarily accepted at the price initially displayed: processing and acceptance are subject to the provider’s terms.

Suspension, repricing, and settlement are not identical across providers or markets. Read the applicable rules rather than assuming that a market will remain open or that all providers handle the same situation the same way.
Why a live stream may not match the betting information
A stream described as live can arrive after the event itself. A spectator at the venue, a provider receiving event data, or another bettor may have more current information than someone watching a broadcast. The UK Gambling Commission’s Remote Technical Standard 15 requires information to alert customers that broadcasts are delayed and that others may have more up-to-date information.

There is no single delay in seconds that applies to every stream, event, operator, or wager. Betfair’s rules also warn that transmissions described as live may be delayed or prerecorded and that in-play requests can take longer to process. A button press therefore does not guarantee acceptance of a wager at the displayed price.
What cash out means
Cash out is an option to request a return before an event ends. The offer can rise, fall, or be withdrawn as the live market changes, especially late in an event. Pressing the cash-out button does not guarantee that the offer will be accepted; availability, acceptance, and settlement are governed by the provider’s terms. The UK Gambling Commission discusses these conditions in its in-play betting guidance.

Is live betting legal?
There is no universal answer: rules depend on where the customer is and what kind of betting or advertising is involved. In Australia, the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s overview of the Interactive Gambling Act says providers cannot offer online in-play sports betting to people in Australia. The page reports that Parliament passed amendments on 19 August 2026; that statement should not be read as establishing details beyond what the regulator says.
In New South Wales, Liquor & Gaming NSW’s wagering advertising rules say it is an offence to publish gambling advertising relating to a sporting event in progress, including live odds and in-play services. This is an NSW advertising rule, not a summary of betting law elsewhere. For a location-specific answer, check the current local regulator and law.

Why regulators pay attention to in-play betting
Live markets can enable rapid repeat betting. The UK Gambling Commission expects licensed operators to identify and respond to signs of gambling-related harm, including changes in how often a customer bets, how long they spend, or how much money they use. Liquor & Gaming NSW identifies continuous and impulsive betting as concerns in its advertising rules. These are regulator concerns, not evidence that every person who places an in-play wager will experience harm.
