Microsoft Rewards: How It Works and Whether It’s Worth It

Microsoft Rewards is a free loyalty program that gives eligible points for activities such as Bing searches and selected Microsoft and Xbox offers. You can exchange points for rewards available in your region, including gift cards, games, sweepstakes entries, and donations. It is most worthwhile when it rewards things you already do and you can redeem for something you genuinely want; it is a poor trade if earning points means spending extra time on repetitive searches.

How Microsoft Rewards works

Sign in: Use an existing Microsoft account or create one.
Activate and check your account: Open the Microsoft Rewards dashboard to see the earning activities and offers currently available to you.
Earn eligible points: Activities may include Bing searches and selected activity through Microsoft services, Xbox, or offers. Microsoft’s current Rewards overview gives a U.S. example of 5 points per PC Bing search, but point-earning limits apply; that rate is not a guaranteed universal rate.
Redeem an available reward: Use the dashboard to see the rewards and point costs available to your account and region.

Microsoft Support says to be logged in with your Microsoft account on Bing, MSN.com, Xbox, the Bing mobile app, or the entry point you use to earn points. Eligible activities and limits can change, so the dashboard is the practical place to check what counts for your account.

What can you redeem points for?

Microsoft lists gift cards, games, sweepstakes entries, nonprofit donations, and other offers among possible rewards. Xbox gift cards are a relevant option for some members, but availability and point costs depend on the catalog shown to your account.

Offers are not identical everywhere: Microsoft Support says they vary by country, and gift cards may be unavailable or removed. Check the actual reward and its point price before building a balance around it. A particular promotion’s official rules, for example, equate 500 points with five entries in that sweepstakes; this is a promotion-specific exchange, not a general cash value for points.

What does Microsoft Rewards cost, and what are points worth?

There is no membership fee. The meaningful cost is your time, plus any inconvenience of changing how you search or use Microsoft services. Points are promotional credits, not money: Microsoft’s Services Agreement says they have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for cash. Microsoft may set earning or redemption caps by person, household, or period, and rewards can be limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Do not assume a fixed dollar value for a point. Compare the point cost of a reward you actually want with the time and activity needed to earn it. If you would use Bing or Xbox anyway, the points may be a useful extra; if you are adding repetitive tasks solely to accumulate points, that time has an opportunity cost.

Do Microsoft Rewards points expire?

The documents retrieved for this article give different inactivity periods: Microsoft Support says points expire after 12 months without earning or redeeming, while the retrieved U.S. Services Agreement PDF states 18 consecutive months. Because those statements differ, neither period should be treated as universal. Check the current terms and your Rewards dashboard for your market and account.

Can you use Microsoft Rewards in another country?

Rewards catalogs and rules are region-dependent. Microsoft Support advises redeeming in the same region where you signed up. Do not use a VPN or proxy to conceal your location during redemption; earning or redeeming across countries contrary to program rules can put points or account access at risk.

Why might Microsoft Rewards stop awarding points?

First confirm that you are signed in to the Microsoft account associated with Rewards and that the activity appears as eligible in your dashboard. Points are subject to limits, and not every search or activity necessarily qualifies. Microsoft also warns against behavior that manipulates earning or location.

Using multiple accounts, inaccurate profile information, bots, macros, emulators, or automated searches.
Earning from more than one country in a day, using a VPN or proxy to mask location, or redeeming outside the country where you earned points.
Not completing a required verification step. Microsoft Support says phone verification may be required; it also says a phone number can be associated with at most six Rewards accounts per household, and VoIP numbers are not accepted for redemption.

These rules can lead to restrictions, suspension, or invalidation of points. If ordinary eligible activity is not being credited, review the dashboard and Microsoft Support’s current account or redemption guidance rather than trying automation or location workarounds.

Should you join Microsoft Rewards?

Use four questions to decide:

Existing habits: Do you already use Bing, Edge, MSN, Xbox, or other participating Microsoft services?
Extra effort: Would earning points require repetitive searches or tasks you would not otherwise do?
Local rewards: Does your account’s catalog include a gift card, game, donation, or other reward you genuinely want at a reasonable point cost?
Reliability: Are you comfortable with changing limits, regional restrictions, possible verification, and the risk of losing points if you violate program rules?

Join if the program adds points to activity you already perform and the local catalog offers rewards you will use. Skip it if the required time outweighs the value you can redeem or if regional and account constraints make redemption impractical.
