Local SEO is the process of improving a business’s visibility in geographically relevant unpaid search results, including Google Search, Google Maps, local packs, map listings and location-focused website results. It combines an accurate Google Business Profile with a useful, technically sound website, genuine reviews, relevant local mentions and a good customer experience.

Google says local results are mainly influenced by relevance, distance and prominence; businesses cannot pay for a better organic local ranking. See Google’s local-ranking guidance. A profile can win discovery while a website converts the visit, so effective local SEO treats both surfaces as one system.

What local SEO includes

Local SEO helps search engines connect a business, its products or services, a geographic area and a searcher’s local intent. Examples include “dentist in Austin,” “emergency plumber near me,” “Italian restaurant downtown” and “roof repair in Phoenix.” Google can infer local intent from the query and the searcher’s location; repeating “near me” on a page is unnecessary.

  • Google Business Profile: The listing system used across Google Search and Maps.
  • Local pack: The map-and-listing block commonly shown for local searches.
  • Local Finder: The expanded map-results interface.
  • Organic local results: Standard website listings with geographic relevance.
  • Citation: A business mention in a directory or other online source, often with name, address and phone.
  • NAP: Name, address and phone number. Consistent information prevents confusion, but perfect consistency everywhere is not a guaranteed ranking formula.

Local SEO versus traditional SEO

Traditional or national SEO Local SEO
Targets broad topics or national demand Targets geographically qualified demand
Emphasizes content, links and technical quality Adds Business Profile, Maps, reviews, citations and local links
Measures website rankings and conversions Also measures calls, directions, bookings, leads and store visits
Location may be incidental Location is central to the query

Local SEO is a layer of broader SEO, not a replacement for crawlable pages, useful content, mobile usability or sound technical implementation.

Who should invest in local SEO?

It generally suits a storefront, restaurant, clinic, contractor, professional service, delivery company or any business that travels to customers. Google’s eligibility guidance covers businesses with a customer-facing location and businesses that serve customers within a defined area: Business Profile representation guidelines.

It is a poor fit for a purely online business with no local operation, a fake or virtual location, a mailbox that does not meet Google’s requirements, or a national publisher that provides no local service. Do not create a listing simply to capture a city where the business has no legitimate presence.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

  1. Search the business name in Google and Maps and identify any existing listing.
  2. Claim the correct listing instead of creating a duplicate, then complete Google’s verification process.
  3. Choose the most accurate primary category and appropriate secondary categories.
  4. Use the real-world business name, genuine address or service area, primary phone and website.
  5. Add regular and special hours, appointment links, services, products, attributes, description and authentic photos.
  6. Monitor suggested edits, messages, reviews and profile changes.

Google says verification confirms that the manager is authorized to represent the business and that complete, accurate information is more likely to appear for relevant searches. Google may also draw information from owners, public web content, licensed third-party data, user contributions and its own interactions with a place; inaccurate outside data can therefore trigger conflicting changes. See how Google sources Business Profile information.

Policies that protect the listing

  • Do not add keywords such as “best emergency plumber” to the name unless they are part of the real-world name.
  • Do not create multiple profiles for one location, fake addresses or separate listings for every service or neighborhood.
  • Do not publish bought, fake or incentivized reviews.
  • Do not claim service coverage that the business does not actually provide.

Violations can cause edits, suppression, suspension and loss of customer trust. Paid placement on a platform is advertising, not a way to buy Google’s organic ranking.

Step 2: Make the website locally useful

Build a clear homepage

State the business name, primary service or product, main location or service region, value proposition, contact method, hours and next step immediately. A title such as Emergency Plumbing Services in Denver, CO | Business Name can work when it accurately describes the business; do not insert every nearby city.

Create substantial service pages

Give each important service its own page when customers have distinct intent. Explain what is included, who needs it, process, timing, qualifications or licenses, pricing factors, genuine examples, service area and useful questions. Link to booking, quote and contact pages.

Create real location pages

A location page should represent a genuine branch or a genuinely served market. Include address or service-area details, hours, directions or landmarks, local phone where appropriate, location-specific services, staff or facilities, original photos, accurate testimonials and practical information such as parking or accessibility. Do not publish dozens of near-identical pages that only swap a city name.

Use local intent naturally

Reference cities, neighborhoods, counties, landmarks, service boundaries, local regulations and customer problems where they help the reader. Natural language is more useful than repeating a place name in every sentence.

Strengthen internal links

Link the homepage to primary services, locations to relevant services, services to booking pages, and case studies or resources to the work they demonstrate. Use descriptive anchors without forcing exact-match phrases.

Step 3: Fix technical SEO and conversion friction

  • Keep important pages indexable and use one preferred canonical URL per page.
  • Make layouts mobile-friendly, improve speed and Core Web Vitals where practical, and use HTTPS.
  • Make phone numbers tappable and forms easy to complete.
  • Fix broken links, redirect errors and accidental noindex or robots.txt blocks.
  • Submit an XML sitemap in Google Search Console and inspect representative URLs.
  • Keep essential business information in crawlable HTML rather than only in images or scripts.

Google’s business-details guidance explains how Search understands a site: Establish your business details.

Step 4: Add accurate LocalBusiness structured data

Use the most specific valid subtype, such as Restaurant, Dentist or Plumber, rather than only the generic LocalBusiness. Depending on the business, useful properties include name, url, logo, image, telephone, address, geo, openingHoursSpecification, areaServed, sameAs, priceRange, department and hasMap.

Mark up only information visible and accurate on the page, use separate markup for genuinely separate locations, and never fabricate review markup. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test and Search Console. Structured data supplies clues about meaning; Google does not promise a rich result or higher ranking. Read the Local Business documentation.

Step 5: Build a trustworthy review process

  • Ask genuine customers after a completed transaction using a direct review link.
  • Request honest feedback, not a positive rating or a review in exchange for a reward.
  • Respond professionally, acknowledge specifics, protect private information and move sensitive matters offline.
  • Report reviews that violate platform policy; never buy or write reviews for yourself.

Google associates review quantity and positive ratings with prominence, but local visibility depends on several factors. Reviews also influence trust and conversion; replying to every review is not an automatic ranking switch.

Step 6: Manage citations and earn local links

Prioritize useful listings

  1. Google Business Profile.
  2. Major map and search platforms used in your market.
  3. Relevant industry directories.
  4. Legitimate chambers, trade associations, government or regional listings.
  5. Platforms customers actually use.

Audit the name, address, phone, website, category, hours, service area, duplicates, old addresses and account ownership. A few accurate, relevant citations are more defensible than hundreds of obscure submissions. Automated listing products can save time for many locations but add recurring cost and vendor dependence.

Earn genuine local mentions

Useful opportunities include associations, disclosed sponsorships, community groups, local news, complementary-business partnerships, industry organizations, events and original local research. Avoid paid link bundles, private blog networks, automated comments and irrelevant directory spam. Strong links normally follow real expertise or community activity.

Special cases: service-area and multi-location businesses

Service-area businesses

Plumbers, cleaners, mobile mechanics and similar businesses should explain where they travel, boundaries, travel fees or minimums, appointment and emergency coverage, and licensing or insurance. Do not create a fake storefront in every city served; a service area is not a branch.

Multi-location businesses and franchises

Maintain one eligible profile and one useful page per real location, with distinct address, phone, hours, services and photos where applicable. Centralize governance while assigning local ownership for reviews, edits and closures. Brand consistency should not erase location-specific information.

Measure outcomes, not just rankings

  • Business Profile calls, website clicks, messages, directions and bookings.
  • Search Console impressions, clicks, queries and landing pages.
  • Analytics conversions, qualified leads, call tracking and CRM revenue.
  • Review count, rating trend and response time.
  • Rank visibility from representative locations, treated as directional because results vary by searcher, device, time and competition.

A high position can still produce poor results when calls go unanswered, hours are wrong, forms fail or the landing page is confusing. Keep paid campaigns such as Google Ads or Yelp Ads separate from organic reporting.

Maintenance schedule

Frequency Tasks
Weekly Check and answer reviews or messages, verify upcoming holiday hours, inspect profile edits and review calls and leads.
Monthly Add authentic photos, review Business Profile performance, test phone and forms, inspect Search Console and check duplicates.
Quarterly Audit citations, categories and services; refresh location pages; verify structured data and indexability; review competitors, conversion rates and local partnership opportunities.

Common local SEO mistakes

  • Keyword-stuffing the Business Profile name.
  • Using virtual offices, mailboxes or fabricated addresses.
  • Publishing thin city pages.
  • Treating citations as a volume contest.
  • Buying or manipulating reviews.
  • Ignoring the website and mobile conversion path.
  • Leaving calls, booking forms or quote requests unanswered.
  • Confusing paid advertising with SEO.
  • Accepting a guaranteed Google position.

Do you need software or an agency?

A single location can usually begin with the free Google Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and a manual citation and review process. Paid tools become useful for recurring rank tracking, citation audits, review monitoring, reporting or many locations. Semrush Local details its current options at its pricing page; BrightLocal (brightlocal.com), Whitespark (whitespark.ca) and Yext (yext.com) serve different local-management needs. Verify live prices before purchase.

Yelp offers a free Business Page at business.yelp.com/products/business-page/. Its U.S. pricing page displayed Yelp Ads from $150 per month, an Upgrade Package at $180 per month and both from $270 per month when checked August 16, 2026; its advertising page separately described self-serve budgets averaging as little as $5 per day. Product, market and sales configuration can change, so treat these as displayed price signals, not universal quotes: Yelp pricing and Yelp Ads. Yelp advertising is paid acquisition, not a Google organic-ranking tactic.

An agency or consultant is most defensible for multiple locations, suspensions, ownership disputes, duplicate listings, a move or rebrand, complex service areas or a lack of internal capacity. Require ownership of accounts, exact deliverables, policy-compliant review work, reporting tied to qualified leads or revenue, cancellation terms and data export. Reject guarantees, secret methods, mass reviews and bulk-link promises.
