Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce is usually the better fit when you need deep control over catalog data, pricing, checkout, integrations, multi-store architecture, or specialized B2B workflows—and can fund the engineering and operational work that control requires.
This is not a simple comparison between one “easy” platform and one “powerful” platform. Magento’s commercial products are now Adobe Commerce, while Magento Open Source remains a separate distribution. Shopify also spans standard plans, Shopify Plus, apps, APIs, headless storefronts, and increasingly capable B2B tools.
Quick decision guide
| Business situation | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| First store, small team, limited technical resources | Shopify |
| Standard DTC catalog and checkout | Shopify |
| Fast launch or rapid market validation | Shopify |
| Enterprise DTC with substantial customization but little infrastructure appetite | Shopify Plus |
| Standard B2B with company accounts, catalogs, and payment terms | Shopify or Shopify Plus, depending on workflow depth |
| Complex approvals, quotes, procurement, or account hierarchies | Adobe Commerce, after detailed requirements validation |
| Full source-code and infrastructure control | Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce PaaS/on-premises |
| Existing Magento team and extensive customizations | Often staying on Adobe Commerce/Magento is more rational than migrating |
| No technical team and no appetite for agency retainers | Shopify |
Do not choose on licensing alone. Map your catalog, checkout, payment, ERP, PIM, B2B, international, SEO, security, and staffing requirements before signing a contract.
What “Magento” means now
Magento is not one current commercial product. Adobe says Magento’s commercial solutions evolved into Adobe Commerce, while Magento Open Source continues separately. See Adobe’s Magento overview.
#1 Best Overall
Shopify
Shopify is hosted SaaS. Standard plans include hosting, bandwidth, SSL/TLS support, a theme-based storefront, APIs, apps, and managed platform operations. Headless storefronts and checkout extensibility are available to varying degrees by plan.
Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise plan. It adds deeper B2B, checkout, staff, automation, API, and expansion-store capabilities, with contract pricing rather than a universally fixed public rate.
Magento Open Source
Magento Open Source is self-managed software. The license may be free, but you still own hosting, deployment, security patches, upgrades, backups, monitoring, extensions, and support.
Adobe Commerce
Adobe Commerce is the commercial Magento-based product. Adobe offers on-premises deployment, Adobe Commerce on Cloud as a PaaS option, and Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, a managed SaaS model. Their control and maintenance responsibilities differ; Adobe’s deployment comparison documents those distinctions.
Shopify vs Magento at a glance
| Criterion | Shopify / Shopify Plus | Magento Open Source / Adobe Commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included and managed by Shopify | Open Source is self-managed; Adobe offers SaaS, PaaS, and on-premises models |
| Launch effort | Usually configure products, payments, shipping, tax, theme, and domain | Requires a compatible server stack, deployment process, integrations, and testing |
| Customization | Apps, APIs, Functions, extensions, themes, and headless tools within Shopify’s model | Broader source-code, data-model, backend, and infrastructure control |
| Checkout | Standard plans have more limits; Plus provides deeper checkout capabilities | Code-level control, with greater testing and maintenance responsibility |
| B2B | Current plans advertise B2B; Plus adds deeper catalogs, payments, and checkout options | Strong fit for unusual pricing, approval, procurement, and ERP-driven processes |
| Operations | Shopify manages core infrastructure and platform updates | Responsibility varies by edition; Open Source and PaaS require substantial technical ownership |
| Cost model | Subscription plus payment, app, implementation, and possible transaction fees | Open Source license may be free; infrastructure, engineering, extensions, support, and upgrades are separate |
| Best fit | Teams prioritizing speed and operational simplicity | Organizations prioritizing control and willing to operate complexity |
Pricing and total cost of ownership
Shopify prices shown for the United States
On August 16, 2026, Shopify’s U.S. pricing page showed these subscription prices:
| Plan | Monthly price when billed yearly | Monthly price when billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29/month | $39/month |
| Grow | $79/month | $105/month |
| Advanced | $299/month | $399/month |
| Shopify Plus | From $2,300/month shown publicly | Contract pricing varies; the page also displayed a $399 starting offer |
These are U.S. signals, and annual versus monthly billing differs. Country, currency, plan availability, contract term, and Shopify Payments availability can change the result. Shopify’s page also listed third-party transaction fees of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus when an external payment provider is used; verify the rate for your country and contract at purchase time. Card-processing fees are separate. See Shopify pricing.
Budget separately for apps, premium or custom themes, implementation, custom apps, migration, ERP/PIM/WMS, tax, search, shipping, customer-service, and international-market integrations.
Rank #2
Adobe Commerce and Magento costs
Adobe does not publish a simple public monthly price list comparable to Shopify’s standard plans. Its pricing page directs buyers toward customized pricing for Commerce SaaS and PaaS offerings.
Magento Open Source removes a commercial software subscription, not the cost of operating a store. Typical cost categories include:
- Hosting, CDN, WAF, search, queues, caching, databases, backups, and disaster recovery
- Developers, DevOps, monitoring, security patching, and release management
- Extensions, themes, payment, tax, shipping, ERP, PIM, and WMS integrations
- Performance optimization, upgrade projects, agency retainers, and support
Adobe’s cost analysis notes that Magento Open Source does not include commercial support.
How to compare your own five-year cost
- List platform subscriptions or Adobe quotes.
- Add payment processing and any Shopify external-provider transaction fees.
- Estimate apps or extensions, themes, custom development, and integration work.
- Include hosting, monitoring, security, backups, support, and upgrades for Magento.
- Add migration, training, data cleanup, and the opportunity cost of a slower launch.
- Model revenue growth, payment mix, seasonality, and international expansion rather than comparing only today’s invoice.
Shopify often lowers infrastructure and routine operational overhead. Magento Open Source can lower license expense while increasing technical responsibility. Neither platform is universally cheaper.
Setup, usability, and launch speed
Why Shopify launches faster
A normal Shopify store does not require you to procure Linux hosting, configure PHP and a database, install OpenSearch, configure queues and caching, or build a deployment pipeline. A merchant can configure products, payments, shipping, tax, a theme, and a domain in the admin.
What a Magento deployment requires
Adobe’s system requirements specify version-compatible Composer, PHP, database, OpenSearch, RabbitMQ, Valkey, nginx, and other dependencies. You must also plan deployments, backups, security updates, extension compatibility, performance monitoring, and recovery.
“Magento is free” therefore describes software licensing for Magento Open Source, not a free complete store. A capable agency or internal team can make Magento manageable, but that team is part of the platform cost.

Catalog, merchandising, and checkout
Catalog complexity
Magento and Adobe Commerce provide strong architectural control over attributes, attribute sets, configurable products, bundles, custom options, catalog rules, relationships, multiple catalogs, and customer-specific assortments. That is valuable when product data and pricing are genuinely complex.
Shopify is faster for standard products, variants, collections, merchandising, and bulk administration. More specialized models may require apps, metaobjects, custom apps, APIs, or an external PIM. Do not assume either platform has a universal SKU ceiling; limits depend on the edition, plan, API, and implementation.

Checkout control
Shopify standard plans provide a managed checkout with more limited customization; Shopify Plus supplies additional checkout capabilities and customization. Magento permits deeper code-level changes, but every change increases testing, security, upgrade, and maintenance work.
Compare payment methods, shipping calculation, tax, discounts, customer accounts, validation, subscriptions, fraud tooling, B2B terms, and country-specific requirements—not just the visual checkout.
B2B: where current comparisons go wrong
It is outdated to describe Shopify as DTC-only. Shopify currently advertises B2B capabilities across its plans. Shopify Plus adds features including unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, deposits, partial payments, payment requests per fulfillment, and additional checkout customization. Details are listed in Shopify’s Plus feature documentation.
Shopify may fit when
- Wholesale pricing and company accounts follow standardized rules.
- You need a combined B2B and DTC operation with managed infrastructure.
- ERP, tax, payment, or procurement gaps can be handled through supported apps, APIs, or external systems.
Validate these requirements before choosing Shopify
- Company and location hierarchies, buyer roles, and approval workflows
- Quotes, negotiated pricing, contract catalogs, purchase orders, credit limits, and net terms
- Requisition lists, sales-representative ordering, and ERP-driven availability
- PunchOut, cXML, EDI, procurement, and multiple legal entities
Adobe Commerce deserves preference when these processes are unusual, deeply integrated, or impossible to represent cleanly in Shopify’s supported model. It does not automatically win every B2B project; map each workflow first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMulti-store, international, and multi-brand commerce
Shopify supports international selling on paid plans, with features varying by plan and country. Evaluate currencies, local pricing, languages, tax regimes, domains, payment methods, regional catalogs, inventory locations, translations, SEO, and brand-specific themes. Shopify Plus can add expansion-store and enterprise capabilities, but verify the number of included stores and current conditions before contracting.
Rank #4
Adobe Commerce can support complex websites, stores, catalogs, locales, and storefront architectures from shared administration. The trade-off is operational complexity: every additional region, integration, language, and customization expands testing and governance.
Customization, integrations, and headless commerce
Shopify’s model
Shopify uses apps, themes, APIs, webhooks, Functions, checkout extensions, and headless storefront tools. Its ecosystem includes thousands of apps, while API access and rate limits vary by plan. This keeps the core platform managed, but your store may depend on several vendors and Shopify-specific data models.
Magento and Adobe’s model
Magento modules and source access allow broader alteration of the data model, backend, checkout, integrations, and infrastructure. Adobe Commerce also uses the Magento Marketplace and Adobe Exchange/App Builder. SaaS, PaaS, and on-premises editions do not expose identical extension points; consult Adobe’s feature comparison.

Shopify supports headless commerce, so the relevant question is the degree and style of control you need—not whether headless is possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, scalability, and reliability
Separate three kinds of scalability:
- Platform scalability: traffic, orders, catalog size, and integrations the software can support.
- Operational scalability: your team’s ability to maintain performance as complexity grows.
- Commercial scalability: whether fees and operating costs remain acceptable as revenue increases.
Shopify
Shopify manages core infrastructure and is well suited to traffic spikes that remain within supported platform patterns. You give up infrastructure-level control and accept dependence on Shopify’s checkout, APIs, apps, and commercial rules.
Magento and Adobe Commerce
You can tune caching, search, databases, queues, integrations, and custom workflows more deeply. You also own more failure modes: poor extensions, unsupported dependencies, database bottlenecks, cache errors, upgrade conflicts, and weak deployment practices.
There is no universal speed winner without a transparent, reproducible test. Adobe’s lifecycle guidance warns that Commerce depends on separately maintained third-party technologies; unsupported dependencies can affect security and support. See Adobe’s lifecycle policy.

Shopify responsibilities
Shopify manages much of the hosting environment, core updates, and infrastructure security. You still manage staff access, app permissions, theme and custom-code quality, privacy, fraud, customer data, integrations, and operational security. Shopify states that its platform is PCI compliant by default, but that does not remove your broader merchant obligations; see the plan information.
Magento and Adobe responsibilities
Depending on the edition, you or your partner must manage core versions, PHP and database support, security patches, extension vulnerabilities, credentials, web-server configuration, backups, monitoring, WAF/CDN settings, and PCI obligations.
Adobe lifecycle snapshot checked August 16, 2026
| Version | Lifecycle information |
|---|---|
| Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 | General availability May 12, 2026; standard support scheduled through May 31, 2029 |
| Adobe Commerce 2.4.8 | Standard support through May 31, 2028 |
| Adobe Commerce 2.4.7 | Standard support ends May 31, 2027; extended support through May 31, 2028 |
| Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 | Standard support ended August 11, 2026; extended support through August 30, 2027 |
Check your exact edition, patch level, PHP version, extensions, and support contract before planning an upgrade. Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service is described as managed, versionless SaaS with automatic upgrades; Adobe Commerce on Cloud is a PaaS model with deeper customization and greater maintenance control.
Ownership, portability, and lock-in
Shopify lock-in can arise from hosted checkout, Liquid themes, apps, APIs, and Shopify-specific data models. Magento is more portable at the source-code and infrastructure level, but proprietary extensions, agency-specific code, custom integrations, deployment architecture, and undocumented credentials can still make a move difficult.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open source does not eliminate lock-in; it changes where the dependency lives. Require documentation, repository access, credential ownership, export procedures, and a realistic handover plan from every partner.
Migration and replatforming
A migration is a business transformation, not merely a product export. Audit these items before selecting a platform:
- Products, variants, attributes, categories, media, reviews, and SEO metadata
- Customers, orders, subscriptions, gift cards, discounts, consent, and login or password-reset behavior
- Redirects, analytics, structured data, tax, shipping, payment tokens, and historical reporting
- ERP, PIM, WMS, CRM, search, marketing, fraud, and customer-service integrations
- Document current workflows, dependencies, data owners, and failure points.
- Map fields and business rules to the target platform.
- Run a test migration and reconcile counts, totals, media, customers, and orders.
- Build and test redirects, analytics, consent, payments, tax, shipping, and integrations.
- Validate the new store in parallel with stakeholders and representative customers.
- Schedule launch with a rollback or contingency plan and monitor orders, errors, rankings, and revenue.
Compare migration vendors by integration scope and data quality, not SKU count alone. Shopify’s partner ecosystem is at Shopify Partners; Adobe’s is at Adobe Solution Partners.
Recommendations by merchant profile
| Merchant profile | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder or small team | Shopify | Fast setup and fewer infrastructure responsibilities |
| Growing DTC brand | Shopify; Plus when enterprise checkout or expansion needs justify it | Managed operations and mature storefront tooling |
| Multi-country retailer | Shopify Plus or Adobe Commerce | Choose based on regional catalogs, legal entities, localization, and integration depth |
| B2B manufacturer | Shopify for standardized workflows; Adobe Commerce for unusual procurement and pricing | Requirements, not platform labels, determine fit |
| Enterprise with ERP and PIM | Adobe Commerce or Shopify Plus | Evaluate data ownership, APIs, governance, and operating team |
| Existing Magento merchant | Audit before migrating | Customizations, SEO, integrations, and data may outweigh licensing differences |
| Existing Shopify merchant | Move only when a documented limitation is material | Do not exchange managed simplicity for custom complexity without a business case |
Final decision framework
Score each platform from 1 to 5 against the criteria that matter to your business, then weight the scores by importance:
- Catalog and pricing model
- Checkout and payment requirements
- B2B roles, approvals, contracts, and procurement
- International, multi-brand, and multi-store needs
- Integration and API requirements
- SEO, content, and frontend governance
- Security, compliance, and lifecycle obligations
- Internal engineering, DevOps, and agency capacity
- Five-year total cost and payment economics
- Launch date, migration risk, and ability to recover from failure
Stop and investigate before deciding if you cannot explain who owns incidents, upgrades, credentials, data quality, extension approval, disaster recovery, and custom-code maintenance for the next five years.
For most new or standard DTC stores, Shopify’s managed operating model is the safer default. Choose Shopify Plus when enterprise requirements exceed standard plans. Choose Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce when the business can prove that deeper control, specialized workflows, or integration architecture will create more value than the engineering and operational burden.
