“996” means working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week: 72 scheduled hours. Jack Ma was reported to praise the schedule during China’s 2019 debate over technology workers’ long hours. But the claim that India has been doing 996 “for years” is not established as a nationwide fact: a study documents excessive hours among surveyed garment workers, not Indian workers generally.
What is 996 work culture?
996 describes a work schedule of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. That adds up to 72 scheduled hours each week, before accounting for any commute or work done outside those hours. The term gained prominence in 2019 amid debate about long hours and worker objections at Chinese technology companies. The U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China described the controversy in its 2019 report.
The label is useful only when the schedule itself is clear. A job with occasional late nights, a six-day week, or a demanding peak season may involve long hours without matching the exact 9-to-9, six-day pattern. Actual hours can also differ from scheduled hours, and neither a schedule nor a long-hours statistic alone explains whether overtime was voluntary, paid, or enforceable.
Did Jack Ma recommend 996?
In April 2019, reporting said Alibaba founder Jack Ma called 996 a “blessing” during the debate over long hours in Chinese technology firms. That remark is the basis for the title’s reference to Ma, but it should not be read as a timeless formal Alibaba policy or as a complete account of his position.

Later coverage recorded Ma discussing the importance of passion while also saying that enforced overtime was unsustainable. The South China Morning Post’s 2019 report quoted him on passion and work. The remarks do not make a 72-hour schedule harmless or establish that workers freely chose it.
Is 996 common in India?
The available evidence does not establish how many Indian workers follow the exact 996 schedule, or that it has been a general norm across India for years. The broad assertion in the title therefore goes beyond what the cited evidence can show.

What the garment-sector study found
The International Labour Organization’s 2015 report on working conditions in India’s garment industry drew on a 2012–13 survey of 432 workers and interviews with 32 stakeholders. In that surveyed population:
- Four-fifths reported having to work more hours per day or more days per week than they had agreed to at recruitment.
- One in five worked seven days a week.
- A quarter regularly worked more than 10 hours per day.
The ILO described overtime as common, sometimes involuntary, and unpaid in some cases. It also reported that about nine in ten workers’ wages were always or most often paid regularly and on time. These findings present a more complete picture of the surveyed workplaces, but they remain evidence about a particular sector and study population—not a national estimate or proof of the exact 996 schedule.

Why the national claim needs a comparable measure
To establish that 996 is widespread in India, evidence would need to measure the same schedule among a representative population and specify whether it counts scheduled or actual hours, which occupations and sectors are included, and when the data were collected. It would also need to distinguish voluntary, paid overtime from hours imposed without adequate compensation.
The ILO’s broader paper on employment and the working population in India from 2000 to 2019 provides labor-market context, but does not supply a directly comparable estimate of 996 prevalence. The Labour Bureau’s portal lists Indian Labour Statistics editions through 2022 & 2023; the portal listing alone does not demonstrate how many workers have a 996 schedule.

A separate figure sometimes used in discussion of Indian work culture is Expedia’s 2018 finding that up to 75% of Indians felt vacation-deprived, reported by Scroll in 2019. That report concerns perceived vacation deprivation, not weekly working hours, and cannot be used as evidence that 996 is common.

The 996 debate arose in China, so legal claims about it should be kept jurisdiction-specific. A 2022 report from the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China said Chinese authorities stated in 2021 that 996 was illegal under existing law. That is reported legal context; it does not show that enforcement eliminated the schedule in practice.

A rule on paper and actual workplace conditions are separate questions. The China reporting does not establish Indian law or practice, and an observed pattern of long hours in an Indian sector does not by itself establish a legal 996 schedule.
Do long hours prove higher productivity?
No. Hours worked measure time, not output, quality, sustainability, or value created. The evidence here describes working-time conditions and some employment practices; it does not compare productivity for workers on 996 schedules with workers on shorter schedules. A claim that 72-hour weeks improve productivity would require evidence that measures results as well as hours and accounts for the work, industry, and period being compared.
