ITR-1, also called Sahaj, is a simplified Indian income-tax return for certain resident individuals. For assessment year (AY) 2026–27, it is generally available to an individual who is resident in India but not “not ordinarily resident,” has total income of up to ₹50 lakh, and has only income types permitted by the form. The income ceiling alone does not establish eligibility: residency, income sources, assets, accounts and losses also matter.
Who can file ITR-1 for AY 2026–27?
You may be eligible to file ITR-1 if you are an individual who is resident in India but not resident and ordinarily resident (RNOR), your total income is no more than ₹50 lakh, and your income falls within the categories allowed in the AY 2026–27 form. Check the current-year form and the Income Tax Department’s guidance together; meeting the headline income limit does not override an exclusion.
The permitted income categories include:
- Salary or pension income.
- Income from up to two house properties.
- Specified income from other sources, such as interest and family pension.
- Agricultural income up to ₹5,000.
- Long-term capital gains under section 112A up to ₹1.25 lakh.
Income of a spouse or minor child may be clubbed with yours only where its source falls within the specified permitted limits. See the AY 2026–27 ITR-1 form and the Department’s ITR-1 filing guidance for the applicable conditions.
Who cannot use ITR-1?

What changed in ITR-1 for AY 2026–27?
The AY 2026–27 form allows reporting income from up to two house properties, and the Department identifies a new field for “rent which cannot be realized.” It also says foreign retirement benefit reporting requirements have been removed. That reporting change is not a general exemption for taxpayers with foreign assets, foreign income or foreign-account signing authority; those connections remain relevant to ITR-1 eligibility under the Department’s current guidance.

What is the ITR-1 due date for AY 2026–27?
The ordinary ITR-1 deadline for AY 2026–27 is not established by the official materials cited here. Do not assume that 21 November 2026 is the deadline for every ITR-1 filer. In an update dated 29 September 2026, the Income Tax Department said Circular No. 07/2026 extended a deadline from 31 October to 21 November 2026 for the specific category listed at Sl. No. 2 of the table under Explanation 2 to section 139(1). That notice does not identify the extension as applying to ordinary ITR-1 filers. Check the current CBDT circular and official portal announcement for the deadline that applies to you: Income Tax Department update on the extension.
