Check the item’s condition and category, purchase date, and return channel before making a claim.
What GameStop offers for a defective item
GameStop’s Return Policy Terms & Conditions distinguish between general merchandise and specified electronics:

- Most products: A defective item other than a PC, PC component, laptop, TV, or monitor can be exchanged for an identical replacement within its applicable return window.
- If no identical replacement is available: GameStop may offer store credit, at its discretion. The policy does not promise a cash refund under this defective-item clause.
- Specified electronics: For PCs, PC components or accessories, laptops, TVs, and monitors, GameStop says to contact the manufacturer for assistance. GameStop support can provide the manufacturer’s contact information at 1-800-883-8895.
These are different routes, not interchangeable remedies. Identify the product category first; do not assume the general exchange rule covers a computer or television.
Which deadline applies?
The deadline depends on whether the item is new or pre-owned and, for some defective pre-owned products, whether you are a Pro member. GameStop’s help article on new and pre-owned return windows summarizes general refund and replacement windows. Its full policy separately sets out defective pre-owned exchange terms. Keep those rules distinct:

The 7-day refund and 15-day replacement summary for pre-owned items is not the same as the separate defective-exchange provision, and neither statement should be treated as a universal deadline for every product. Confirm the current terms for the exact item and purchase date.
Does opening the item prevent an exchange?
GameStop lists opened new hardware, software, accessories, collectibles, and PCs among items that generally cannot be returned once opened. The same policy also expressly permits exchanges for defective products within the applicable return window. Read those provisions together: the defective-exchange language is not an unconditional guarantee for every opened item or category. In particular, the separate manufacturer route applies to the listed computer and display products.

What to bring and where to return it
Have valid proof of purchase ready. GameStop lists an order number, order confirmation email, original sales receipt, packing slip, or return barcode as examples. Return routing also depends on how you bought the item:
- In-store purchase: Return it to a store.
- Online order under $500: The Help Center says it may be returned in store with the packing slip, or through the online return process when eligible.
- Online order above $500: GameStop’s full policy says it cannot be returned in store; use the applicable online process.
GameStop’s return-start help article describes the online portal, but some order types cannot be processed there. The article also lists shipping fees for online returns; routing and fees may change, so check the current instructions for your order before sending it. How to make the claim
- Find the purchase date and proof. Locate the receipt, order email, packing slip, order number, or return barcode.
- Classify the item. Determine whether it is a general product or one of the PCs, components/accessories, laptops, TVs, or monitors that GameStop routes to the manufacturer. Also note whether it is new or pre-owned and whether you are a Pro member.
- Check the applicable window. Compare the purchase date with the relevant general return window or defective pre-owned exchange period; confirm exceptions in the current policy.
- Use the right channel. Take an in-store purchase to a store. For an online purchase, check whether it qualifies for an in-store return or must go through the online process.
- Ask for the remedy the policy describes. For covered general merchandise, ask about an identical replacement. If none is available, store credit is discretionary. For an excluded electronic category, contact the manufacturer; GameStop support can provide contact information.
Important limits
GameStop says it may limit or decline returns and retains final authority over eligibility, subject to applicable law. The policy does not establish how a particular state’s consumer-protection law applies to an individual defect claim, so a store-policy decision should not be read as a ruling on legal rights. The full policy also contains a seasonal 2025–2026 return-window note; that period has passed and should not be treated as the current rule.
