CompTIA SecurityX is an expert-level, vendor-neutral cybersecurity certification in CompTIA’s Xpert Series. Announced on December 17, 2024 as the successor to CASP+, it focuses on hands-on security architecture and senior security engineering work. Its current researched exam document is CAS-005 V5: the exam has up to 90 questions, lasts 165 minutes and covers four weighted domains.

What is CompTIA SecurityX?

SecurityX is CompTIA’s expert-level credential for experienced technical cybersecurity practitioners. CompTIA describes the certification as validating the ability to architect, engineer, integrate and implement secure solutions across complex environments, including cloud, on-premises and hybrid systems. Its scope includes automation, monitoring, detection, incident response, cryptography, governance, compliance, risk management and threat modeling. AI-related security challenges also appear in the objectives.

SecurityX belongs to CompTIA’s Xpert Series. CompTIA director of cybersecurity product management Patrick Lane characterized it as a credential for advanced practitioners rather than managers; that is CompTIA’s positioning, not an independently verified comparison of every certification on the market.

Is SecurityX the same as CASP+?

SecurityX is the successor name to CASP+. CompTIA’s December 17, 2024 announcement said the change did not alter the status of people who already held an active CASP+ certification or the continuing education program. That announcement does not establish that every current exam, course, voucher or credential rule is unchanged, so check CompTIA’s current guidance for those details.

CompTIA’s launch announcement cited CyberSeek figures of nearly 265,000 additional cybersecurity workers needed to address U.S. staffing needs and a workforce able to fill 83% of available cybersecurity jobs. Those are historical figures reported by CompTIA in 2024, not 2026 estimates; the cited passage does not state the underlying CyberSeek dataset’s publication date. What is the CAS-005 exam?

CAS-005 V5 is the exam identified in CompTIA’s SecurityX objectives document, version 7.0. The document describes a maximum of 90 questions, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based items, and a 165-minute testing period. Results are reported as pass or fail, without a scaled score.

Exam detail CAS-005 V5
Maximum questions 90
Question types Multiple-choice and performance-based
Duration 165 minutes
Result Pass/fail; no scaled score
Accreditation CompTIA says the exam is accredited by ANAB for compliance with ISO 17024

CompTIA says the exam undergoes regular review and objective updates. The objectives document warns that its examples are not exhaustive and that exam content may change. Check CompTIA’s CAS-005 V5 exam objectives before setting a study plan.

How much experience do I need for SecurityX?

CompTIA recommends at least 10 years of general hands-on IT experience, including at least 5 years of broad hands-on security experience. The objectives state this as a recommendation, not a formal prerequisite.

What topics are on the SecurityX exam?

The objectives group exam content into four domains. The percentages show each domain’s weighting, not a guaranteed count of questions about any particular subtopic.

Domain Weight What it broadly covers
Governance, Risk, and Compliance 20% Governance and compliance work, risk management and threat modeling
Security Architecture 27% Secure and resilient system design
Security Engineering 31% Applied security engineering and implementation
Security Operations 22% Monitoring, detection, incident response and related operations

Security Engineering has the largest domain share. The objectives also include cryptographic concepts and security challenges related to emerging technologies such as AI. Use the current objectives to identify the specific tasks and examples within each domain rather than assuming the high-level descriptions above are exhaustive.

How to decide whether SecurityX fits your goals

SecurityX is most directly aligned with experienced practitioners whose work involves security architecture or senior security engineering. To judge fit, compare your experience and responsibilities with CompTIA’s recommendation and the exam’s technical scope, then review the domain weights against your strengths and gaps. Also consider whether a timed exam combining multiple-choice and performance-based items suits how you demonstrate technical skills.

The available information establishes SecurityX’s relationship to CASP+ and its own exam structure; it does not provide a researched head-to-head comparison with CISSP, CISM or another credential. Avoid treating those certifications as equivalent or ranking them without comparing their current requirements and objectives directly.

What preparation resources does CompTIA describe?

CompTIA identifies CertMaster Perform and CertMaster Practice as SecurityX preparation resources. Its announcement describes live virtual machine labs, challenge labs for each exam domain, demonstration videos, podcast videos with cybersecurity professionals, assessments and interactive activities. CompTIA says CertMaster Perform assesses learners at the beginning and throughout the learning process, with attention to knowledge gaps. These are vendor-described features; the announcement does not provide independent evidence of learning outcomes, a price or current package terms.
