BitGo is a digital-asset infrastructure provider that offers institutional custody through regulated entities. Its custody service combines private-key management with storage, transaction approvals, reporting and related services. For a prospective client, the practical questions are which BitGo entity will hold the assets, who controls each key, how transfers and recovery work, and whether the account’s exact arrangement qualifies for any stated insurance.
What institutional crypto custody means
A digital-asset custodian safeguards the keys used to control crypto assets and provides a process for authorizing transfers. That makes custody more than wallet software: it is also a service relationship and legal arrangement, with responsibilities set by the contracting entity, account terms and applicable jurisdiction.
BitGo describes its institutional service as qualified custody, with cold-storage options, transaction controls, reporting and audit tools. Its statements about regulatory status, asset segregation and service features describe BitGo’s offering; they should not be treated as a universal legal conclusion for every client or jurisdiction. See BitGo’s qualified-custody product page.
How keys authorize a transaction
Crypto assets are controlled by private keys. A custody arrangement determines who holds or controls those keys and what approvals are required before a transaction can be signed and broadcast. A cryptographic design can distribute signing authority, but it does not by itself establish who is legally responsible, how access is restored, or what happens during an operational incident.

Multi-signature
In a multi-signature wallet, multiple keys must sign a transaction. BitGo describes its setup as M-of-N: a configured number of signers out of a larger set must approve. Its technical white paper calls 2-of-3 a common arrangement, but the threshold and key holders depend on the implementation. A client should establish who holds each key, which combination can move assets, and what happens if a signer is unavailable.
Multi-party computation
Multi-party computation (MPC) distributes key material into shares and uses cryptographic computation to produce a signature without bringing the complete private key together in one place. The available method depends on the asset and implementation. BitGo’s wallet-security comparison explains the two approaches.

What happens in an institutional transfer workflow
In practice, an institution needs a defined chain from request to authorization, signing and recordkeeping. BitGo says its controls can include address allowlisting, transaction or velocity limits, user roles, approval policies, hardware security modules (HSMs), transaction validation and audit logs. These measures can help govern operations; they do not eliminate cyber, human, service-continuity or other risks. The specific account’s enabled controls and procedures matter.
- Initiate: an authorized user requests a transfer, specifying the asset, amount and destination.
- Check policy: configured rules may verify the destination against an allowlist, apply limits and require approvals from designated roles.
- Approve and sign: the required key holders or signing process authorize the transaction under the account’s policy.
- Validate and record: the transaction is checked and activity is recorded for review or audit, subject to the service and account configuration.
Ask the provider to walk through a routine withdrawal and an exception: a new destination, an unusually large transfer, a lost credential, a departing employee or an unavailable signer. A policy that looks strong on paper is useful only if the institution can operate it and recover access when something goes wrong.

Cold storage, hot wallets and self-custody
BitGo describes its institutional custody wallets as cold-storage oriented. Cold storage keeps keys offline, reducing exposure to internet-connected systems, but withdrawals still require operational procedures and may involve different access or availability considerations than an online wallet. Confirm expected processing, service levels and emergency procedures for the specific account rather than assuming a particular withdrawal speed.
Custody and self-custody differ chiefly in who takes on key-management and operational responsibility. BitGo says custody shifts operational responsibility to the custodian; with self-custody, the institution retains direct control and must manage security, governance and compliance processes itself. Shared-key arrangements can divide responsibilities, so identify each party’s authority rather than relying only on the label “custody.”

Which BitGo entity serves a client?
BitGo’s custodial-wallet page names BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association; BitGo New York Trust Company, LLC; BitGo Europe GmbH; and BitGo GmbH (Switzerland) as entities through which custody wallets are provided. The listed entities do not establish which one will serve a particular client: eligibility and availability can vary by geography and product. See BitGo’s custodial-wallet page and confirm the contracting entity, governing law and applicable terms directly.
BitGo says client assets are held separately from its corporate balance sheets within regulated entities. That is the company’s description of its arrangements, not a guarantee of a particular insolvency result. Legal treatment depends on the entity, contract, jurisdiction and circumstances.

What BitGo’s insurance statement does—and does not—establish
BitGo advertises a policy limit of up to $250 million for loss, theft and misuse when BitGo Bank & Trust, N.A. holds all private keys. The company’s insurance FAQ, last updated May 2025, says coverage generally addresses keys stolen, lost or misused by BitGo and does not cover cases where a client or third party holds some keys, citing hot wallets as an example. The amount is a stated limit under a qualifying arrangement, not a promise that every loss will be reimbursed or that every account and asset is covered. See BitGo’s insurance information and its 2025 insurance FAQ.
BitGo’s FAQ says customers may work with broker Woodruff Sawyer to seek additional insurance. It also describes a possible separate KRS insurance route for hot-wallet clients through Digital Asset Services. These are options described by BitGo, not confirmation that coverage is available or suitable for a particular client. The public webpage and FAQ are not the full operative policy; request the current policy and account-specific details.
How to evaluate BitGo or another custody arrangement
Use the same diligence questions whether assessing BitGo, another custodian or a self-custody design. Ask for written answers tied to the proposed account and jurisdiction.
- Key responsibility: Who holds or controls each key or share? Who can initiate, approve and complete a transfer?
- Signing design and assets: Is the arrangement multi-signature, MPC or another method? What thresholds, recovery paths and supported-asset limitations apply?
- Storage and access: Are assets held in cold or hot arrangements? What are normal withdrawal procedures, availability expectations and emergency processes?
- Governance and audit: Which roles, allowlists, transaction limits and approval rules are enabled? What activity is logged and how can the institution review it?
- Entity and legal terms: Which legal entity contracts with the client? What regulatory status is relevant in the client’s jurisdiction, and what do the contract and governing law say about segregation and access?
- Insurance: Which key-control arrangement qualifies? What events, exclusions, limits, insured parties and claims procedures apply? Is the policy current, and how would proceeds be distributed?
- Resilience: How are lost keys, staff changes, service disruptions, disaster recovery and incident response handled?
These questions distinguish a provider’s security features from the broader custody arrangement. A good assessment connects technical controls to named responsibilities, contractual terms and a workable recovery plan.
