What Is Arbitrage Betting? How the Math Works and What Can Go Wrong

Arbitrage betting uses odds differences across operators to cover every outcome for a theoretical margin—but only if both bets are accepted and settle under matching rules.

Arbitrage betting means placing bets on every possible outcome of the same event at different operators when the odds are favorable enough that the combined implied probability is below 100%. Stake sizes are adjusted so each result returns roughly the same amount. The apparent profit is conditional: both bets must be accepted at the quoted odds and settle under matching rules.

How arbitrage betting works

Bookmakers can offer different odds on the same event. If the best available prices across all outcomes imply a combined probability below 100%, a bettor can theoretically cover every outcome for less than the resulting payout. The UK Gambling Commission defines arbitrage betting as taking advantage of odds variations between operators to make a profit regardless of an event’s outcome (UK Gambling Commission guidance).

The comparison must be like for like: the same event, outcome definitions, time period and settlement rules. For example, a bet settled on regulation time does not necessarily hedge a market that includes overtime.

How to check the odds and calculate stakes

1. Add the implied probabilities

For decimal odds, divide 1 by the odds for each outcome, then add the results. If the total is below 1 (100%), the prices suggest a theoretical arbitrage before costs and settlement complications. A total at or above 1 does not produce that margin.

For American odds, positive odds use 100 divided by the odds plus 100; negative odds use the absolute odds divided by the absolute odds plus 100. These conversions and the worked example below are from ARB’s March 19, 2026 guide (ARB guide).

2. Allocate the stakes to balance returns

The stakes need to reflect the odds, not simply split the bankroll evenly. In ARB’s arithmetic example, Chiefs at +110 and Eagles at +105 have implied probabilities of 47.6% and 48.8%, totaling 96.4%. With a $200 bankroll, the guide allocates $98.80 and $101.20 respectively. At the stated prices, that produces a $207.47 payout whichever side wins: $7.47 above the $200 total stake, or a 3.73% margin on the outlay.

This is an illustration of the calculation, not a claim that these prices are currently available or typical. It assumes both bets are accepted at those odds, both stand, the markets match, and no fees, commission, tax, currency conversion or other costs reduce the return.

Why the theoretical profit is not guaranteed in practice

Odds can move before both bets are placed

A price can change between placing the first wager and getting the second one accepted. If the second price moves enough, the margin can disappear or turn into a loss.

A bet can be rejected or voided

If one operator rejects a stake or later voids a wager while the other bet stands, the position is no longer covered on both outcomes. The bettor then has event risk rather than a locked-in theoretical margin.

Markets may have different settlement rules

Check the market description and applicable rules, not just the teams or competitors shown. Differences such as regulation time versus overtime can leave outcomes that are not actually hedged.

Operators may limit accounts

Account restrictions are another practical risk, but their prevalence and reasons should not be confused with arbitrage-specific enforcement. UK Gambling Commission Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes reported that 643,779 of 14,923,840 active customer accounts, or 4.31%, had some form of restriction. The July 23, 2025 report covers a majority of the UK market and accounts active in 2024; it does not say those accounts were restricted for arbitrage, and the Commission cautions that restrictions vary by operator and that the data do not provide a complete picture of individual operators’ reasons (Gambling Commission, July 23, 2025).

Some operators expressly address arbitrage in their own terms. For example, bet365’s US terms identify arbitrage strategies as prohibited activity and allow account limitation or suspension under the stated conditions. That is one operator’s US policy, not a rule that applies to every bookmaker (bet365 US terms).

In-play markets add speed and timing risks

Live odds can be repriced rapidly, and delays can arise between an event, a broadcast and an operator’s confirmation of a wager. The UK Gambling Commission describes continuous in-play price amendments, broadcast latency and confirmation delays, as well as bots used to detect arbitrage and stale prices in its guidance (UK Gambling Commission guidance). A displayed price may therefore be outdated by the time a bet is confirmed.

Is arbitrage betting legal?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer established here. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and the activity involved. UK Gambling Commission guidance concerns remote betting and licensing in Great Britain, including licensing requirements for relevant remote betting activity by operators; it is not a global legal opinion about an individual bettor (UK Gambling Commission remote gambling guidance).

Legality and an operator’s contract terms are separate questions. A bettor should check local law and the current terms of each operator used. A policy at one bookmaker does not establish what another operator permits.

What to check before treating a margin as real

  • Confirm that every outcome is covered in the same event and that market periods and settlement rules match.
  • Recalculate using the prices actually available when placing each bet, rather than assuming a displayed quote will remain unchanged.
  • Account for applicable fees, commission, taxes and currency conversion before treating a probability total below 100% as a net margin.
  • Read the operator’s current rules on stakes, voids, account restrictions and arbitrage strategies; terms differ by operator and jurisdiction.
  • Treat any in-play calculation as especially time-sensitive because prices and confirmations can change quickly.
