A stock group in TallyPrime is an optional inventory master that gathers stock items sharing a business feature, such as brand, product type, or material, so you can view them together. You create one from Gateway of Tally > Create > Stock Group, or with Alt+G (Go To) > Create Master > Stock Group. Grouping is not required before you can create a stock item.
What a stock group does
A stock group is a way of classifying stock items. If several items share something your business tracks, such as the same brand, the same product type, or the same material, you can place them in one group. TallyPrime then lets you locate those items quickly and see a consolidated view for the group. The official Tally Solutions help article “How to Manage Your Stock Items in TallyPrime,” last updated February 17, 2026, gives brand, product type, and material as examples. Its stock-item guide also uses cotton and synthetic fabric as example groups.
Two points about how groups behave in practice:
- Grouping is optional. The same help article states that having a stock group is not mandatory to create a stock item in TallyPrime. If you have not created any groups, TallyPrime places your stock items under an internal group called Primary.
- Groups can nest. You can create subgroups under Primary or under an existing stock group, which builds a hierarchy. The parent you choose controls where the new group sits in that hierarchy.
Stock group or stock category?
The two masters solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one makes reports harder to read. Use the comparison below to decide.
| Question | Stock group | Stock category |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Hierarchical; can contain subgroups | Parallel; cuts across groups |
| Typical attribute | Primary feature such as product type or material | A second shared attribute, such as a price or functional classification |
| Example | Fabrics > Cotton, Fabrics > Synthetic | “Fast-moving” items that appear across several groups |
| Reporting use | Consolidated view of the items in one branch | Finding items that belong together across different branches, such as substitutes |
In short, use a stock group for the main way you organize inventory, and a stock category when the same items need a second, independent classification. The help article explicitly describes categories as a way to classify items across groups and to obtain reports on alternatives or substitutes. Categories are not a universal replacement for groups; the two support different classification dimensions, and many businesses use both.

How to create a stock group
The steps below follow TallyHelp’s stock-group guidance. Screen labels and shortcuts can differ between TallyPrime releases, so check them against your own screen.
- Open the master. From Gateway of Tally, choose Create > Stock Group. Alternatively, press Alt+G (Go To), then choose Create Master > Stock Group.
- Enter the name. Type the group name. The master also accepts an alias if you need a second name for the same group.
- Set Under. Choose Primary to create a top-level group, or choose an existing stock group to create a subgroup. If the parent you need does not exist yet, create it first, or press Alt+C to create the master on the fly without leaving the screen.
- Decide on quantity addition. The field “Should quantities of items be added” controls whether quantities of items in the group are combined. Choose it only when the items share compatible units. The help article gives kilograms and pieces as units that cannot be added together. You can also choose not to add quantities.
- Configure tax details, if they apply. The guide lists GST and other tax-detail options at group level. Items under the group can inherit applicable details. Which fields appear depends on the features enabled in your company and on your jurisdiction. Leave them blank if they do not match your setup, and confirm treatment with your tax adviser.
- Save. Accept the screen. The help article identifies Ctrl+A as the usual save shortcut.
Things to check after you create the group
- Open a stock item and confirm its Under field points to the group you intended. Items created before you made the group stay under Primary until you change them.
- If you intend to combine quantities, confirm that every item in the group uses units that can be added together. Mixed units will produce figures that do not mean anything.
- Review the group-wise stock reports you rely on. TallyPrime’s inventory overview describes real-time reports including Stock Summary, Movement Analysis, Aging Analysis, Inventory Reorder Status, and Godown Summary. Grouping affects how items appear in them, so a misplaced item will show up in the wrong place.
Common mistakes
- Creating groups for every variation. Start with one primary feature. Too many levels make the hierarchy hard to maintain.
- Using a group where a category is needed. If you need to group items across several branches, a category is usually the better tool.
- Assuming quantities should be added. Only add quantities when the units are compatible.
For most small businesses, the practical setup is simple: create a top-level group for the main organizing feature, add subgroups only where a real reporting need exists, and reserve categories for any second classification you must track separately.
