It may offer limited check, debit-card or electronic-transfer access, but its rate, minimum balance, fees and transaction rules depend on the account. It is different from a money market mutual fund, which is an investment rather than a bank deposit.
How a money market account works
A money market account—also called a money market deposit account, or MMDA—is a deposit account offered by a bank or credit union. The institution pays interest on the balance, and you can generally access funds under the account’s terms. Unlike a certificate of deposit (CD), it has no set maturity date.
The bank or credit union sets the interest rate and annual percentage yield (APY), and these can change. Some accounts require an opening deposit or ongoing minimum balance. Depending on the account, access may include checks, a debit card, ATM withdrawals or electronic transfers. The agreement determines which transactions are allowed and whether fees or limits apply.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says money market accounts tend to pay higher interest rates than other types of savings accounts, while noting that transaction limits can apply. That general description does not guarantee a higher rate than a particular account: compare the APYs and terms currently offered by the institutions you are considering.

What to check before opening one
Review the account’s Truth in Savings disclosures and agreement rather than relying on the words “money market” in its name. Compare the factors that determine how much you might earn and how easily you can use the money:
- APY and rate terms: Check the current APY and whether the rate can change.
- Minimums: Look for any opening deposit, required balance or balance threshold tied to the advertised APY.
- Fees: Check for monthly maintenance charges and the conditions for avoiding them.
- Access and transaction rules: Confirm whether checks, debit-card purchases, ATM withdrawals and electronic transfers are available, and whether limits or charges apply.
- Deposit insurance: Confirm that the institution is federally insured and understand how coverage applies to your ownership category and other deposits there.
There is no universal current APY or minimum balance for money market accounts; both vary by institution and account.

Is a money market account FDIC-insured?
An MMDA at an FDIC-insured bank is an eligible deposit product, and FDIC coverage is automatic. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, for each account ownership category. It covers principal plus interest accrued or due through the date of the bank’s default. The limit applies across eligible deposits in the same category at the same bank—not separately to each account.
Deposits at federally insured credit unions receive comparable protection through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Check that the institution is insured and consider how your ownership category and other deposits at that institution affect coverage.

Money market account vs. money market mutual fund
The similar names can be confusing, but the products are fundamentally different:
| Feature | Money market account (MMDA) | Money market mutual fund |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A deposit account at a bank or credit union | An investment offered by brokerage firms and fund companies |
| Deposit insurance | Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank are covered within applicable limits; insured credit-union deposits have NCUA protection | Not covered by FDIC deposit insurance |
| Access | May include limited check, debit-card or electronic-transfer access, as set out in the account terms | Some funds allow check-writing, but that does not make them savings or checking accounts |
A money market mutual fund is an investment, not a deposit account. Do not assume that deposit insurance applies because a brokerage product has “money market” in its name or offers checks. Review its investment risks and any applicable brokerage protections separately.

Money market account vs. checking account
Checking is generally better suited to frequent everyday payments. A money market account may include checks or a debit card, but transaction restrictions can make it less convenient for routine spending.
Money market account vs. regular savings account
Both are deposit accounts. A money market account often has a higher rate and a higher minimum balance than regular savings, and may offer somewhat more payment access. Actual rates, minimums and features vary by institution.

Money market account vs. CD
A CD generally has a set term and may charge a penalty for early withdrawal. A money market account has no designated maturity, so it offers access under its terms rather than a CD’s term-based rate certainty. The trade-off is that the money market account’s rate can change.
Who may find one useful?
A money market account may suit someone who wants an interest-paying deposit account and expects to keep a balance that meets its requirements, while retaining some access to the funds. It may be a poor fit if the minimum is hard to maintain, fees would erode earnings, or its transaction rules do not match how often you need to spend or transfer money.
Compare the account’s APY, minimums, fees, access rules and insurance status together. A higher advertised rate is not the whole picture if you cannot meet the balance conditions or need more frequent payment access.
