The index targets a 50% aggregate weight for each segment, but that does not mean every company has the same weight. A fund attempts to follow the benchmark; it does not guarantee the index’s return, and investors remain exposed to substantial stock-market risk.
What “large-midcap 250” means
The “250” refers to the benchmark’s number of companies, not a rupee amount, a return target, or 250 equally weighted shares. The Nifty LargeMidcap 250 combines the constituents of the Nifty 100 and Nifty Midcap 150: 100 large-cap companies and 150 mid-cap companies. NSE Indices describes it as a portfolio representing those two groups through the respective parent indices.

The index is designed to provide exposure to both ends of the large- and mid-cap universe in one benchmark. A fund tracking it therefore holds exposure to a broader set of companies than an index limited to the Nifty 100, while retaining a substantial mid-cap allocation. The mix can provide diversification across company sizes, but it does not remove equity-market risk or guarantee that the two segments will perform well at the same time.

How the index allocates weight and changes over time
The benchmark targets an aggregate 50% weight for large caps and 50% for mid caps. Those are segment-level weights: the index does not give each of the 250 companies an equal 0.4% weight. The weights within each segment follow the index’s methodology, described in the September 30, 2026 factsheet as periodic capped free-float methodology. The segment weights are reset quarterly.

Constituent membership is reviewed semi-annually along with the parent indices. A company’s position in the market, classification and eligibility can change, so “large cap” and “mid cap” should not be treated as permanent labels attached to particular businesses. SEBI’s capitalization categories are intended to create a uniform universe for equity mutual funds. AMFI prepares the relevant stock list in consultation with SEBI and stock exchanges, using exchange-provided data.
The September 30, 2026 factsheet records a base date of April 1, 2005, a base value of 1,000, and an index launch date of November 30, 2017. These are index-history details; the 2005 base date does not mean an investable fund tracking this index existed from that date.
How an index fund follows the benchmark
An index fund is passively managed: instead of choosing holdings through active security selection, it seeks to replicate or closely track a specified benchmark. In an equity index fund, the manager buys the benchmark’s shares, or otherwise obtains exposure to them, in a way intended to approximate the index’s composition and weights. As the index changes, the fund may need to adjust holdings.

The SEBI-filed Edelweiss scheme information document provides an example of how this objective is expressed. It describes an open-ended equity scheme seeking returns before expenses that closely correspond to the Nifty LargeMidcap 250’s total returns, subject to tracking error. The document also states that there is no assurance the objective will be achieved. That is an example of one scheme’s terms, not a promise or universal wording for every fund tracking this index.
For that scheme, the normal allocation range is 95–100% in equities constituting the index and 0–5% in debt and money-market instruments. Its document says it invests in the same weightage as the index, while allowing for operational cash and liquidity needs and rebalancing. These ranges apply to the cited scheme document; check another fund’s current scheme information document before assuming its allocation rules are the same.
How to buy or redeem a mutual fund—and how an ETF differs
The cited Edelweiss scheme is open-ended, meaning investors can make purchases and redemptions with the fund at NAV-related prices on business days under its stated terms. For valid redemption requests, that document specifies payment of proceeds within three working days. The precise process, eligibility, cut-off rules and other dealing terms should be checked in the current documents for the specific scheme and the platform used.

An index mutual fund should not be confused with an exchange-traded fund (ETF). An ETF trades on an exchange, whereas the open-ended scheme described above is purchased or redeemed through the mutual-fund structure at NAV-related prices. These are different ways to implement exposure to an index; the word “index” alone does not tell you how a product is bought, sold or priced during the day.
Why a fund’s return can differ from the index
A tracking fund aims to follow an index, but its realized return can differ from the benchmark. It has expenses, may hold cash for liquidity or redemptions, and must trade and settle holdings in real markets. The fund’s transactions may occur at different times or prices from the index’s closing values. Reinvestment timing, transaction costs, liquidity and settlement delays can also affect how closely the fund follows the benchmark.
Two related measures help describe this difference, but they answer different questions:

| Measure | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Expense ratio | The fund’s ongoing charge. The applicable figure depends on the scheme and plan. | Check the latest scheme disclosure and confirm whether you are comparing a direct or regular plan. |
| Tracking difference | The realized gap between the fund’s return and the benchmark’s return over a stated period. | Compare the same periods and return basis across funds to see how closely investors’ realized returns followed the index. |
| Tracking error | The variability of the daily differences between benchmark returns and the fund’s NAV returns. | Use it to assess consistency of daily tracking; it does not by itself show whether the fund’s return was higher or lower overall. |
The cited scheme document defines tracking error as the standard deviation of the differences between daily benchmark returns and scheme NAV returns. It describes tracking error as inherent in index funds and says tracking difference is reported monthly over specified horizons. A low tracking error is not the same thing as a low expense ratio, and neither measure alone describes every aspect of a fund’s realized performance.

This is an equity investment, not a guaranteed-return product or a low-risk substitute for cash. The cited scheme’s risk label says investors understand that principal is at very high risk. Its allocation rules permit 95–100% in index equities under normal circumstances, so its value can move with the share prices of the underlying companies and broader equity markets.

Having 250 constituents does not eliminate the risks associated with stocks, nor does a 50/50 segment split ensure balanced performance in every period. The index’s composition can change, and the relative contribution of individual companies can differ because the companies are not equally weighted. The available factsheet contains dated market measurements, not forecasts; historical index information should not be read as an estimate or promise of future fund returns.

How to compare Nifty LargeMidcap 250 funds
Several providers are listed by NSE for domestic Nifty LargeMidcap 250 index funds, including Edelweiss, HDFC, ICICI Prudential, Mirae Asset and Zerodha. A listing establishes that providers are associated with funds tracking the benchmark; it does not establish that every scheme is currently open for investment, equally priced or right for a particular investor.
Compare the actual scheme disclosures rather than assuming funds tracking the same index are interchangeable. The following checks help distinguish fund terms and implementation without treating one metric as a complete verdict:
- Expense ratio: Check the current charge for the plan you would use. Direct and regular plans can have different expenses, so do not compare one plan’s figure with another plan’s figure without noting the distinction.
- Tracking difference: Compare fund NAV returns with the benchmark across matching periods. Confirm the return period and basis, and avoid comparing unlike time windows.
- Tracking error: Review how variable the daily return gap has been. It complements, rather than replaces, tracking difference.
- Plan and access: Check whether the scheme offers the plan you intend to buy, how transactions are handled, and what operational terms apply on your chosen platform.
- Current scheme documents: Read the latest scheme information document and relevant disclosures for investment objective, risk, allocation, redemption and reporting terms.
Fees and tracking figures can change, and a useful comparison needs current, period-matched data for the same plans. The cited materials do not provide a synchronized fee and tracking comparison across all providers, so they do not support ranking these funds or naming a best one.

- Confirm the benchmark. Check that the scheme’s current documents identify the Nifty LargeMidcap 250 as its benchmark, rather than relying on a similar-sounding name.
- Read the objective and risk disclosures. Look for the precise tracking objective, any stated allocation ranges and the scheme’s current risk label. Treat one provider’s terms as specific to that scheme.
- Compare current costs and results. Review the expense ratio and reported tracking difference and error for the plan and periods you are considering.
- Check dealing terms. Confirm purchase and redemption arrangements, applicable cut-offs, settlement terms and any platform-specific requirements in current documents.
- Decide whether the exposure fits your needs. The fund holds equity exposure across large- and mid-cap companies, and its principal is not protected. Consider your investment horizon, ability to tolerate losses and broader portfolio before choosing it.
Index constituents, fund availability and scheme terms can change. The index factsheet cited here is dated September 30, 2026; use current official index information and the latest scheme documents when making a decision.
