Its popularity reflects social-media and celebrity attention as well as the appeal of collecting; blind-box packaging adds a surprise element, but means you may not get the design you want. If you’re considering a purchase, buy through a trusted channel and use POP MART’s verification process rather than relying on appearance alone.
What is a Labubu?
Labubu is a monster-elf character in POP MART’s THE MONSTERS collectible line. Products include plush pendants, vinyl figures and other collectibles. One official example is the THE MONSTERS Pin for Love Series vinyl plush pendant blind box (A–M). POP MART lists polyester, PVC and zinc alloy among its materials, dimensions of 6 × 5 × 10.5 cm excluding the hanging loop, and an age notice: “Not suitable for persons under 15.” Its listing gives an online release date of August 28, 2025; stock status can change.
Why is everyone talking about Labubu?
Reports point to social-media attention, celebrity visibility, the pendant and key-chain format, and the collecting surprise of blind boxes as factors behind Labubu’s prominence. Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) describes fans queuing and buying or bidding online, while the Associated Press reported worldwide attention since 2024 and long queues at POP MART stores. Those observations describe a trend, not a single motivation shared by every buyer.
The interest has also become financially significant for POP MART. The Associated Press reported that the company’s fiscal 2025 revenue was 37.1 billion yuan, up 185% year on year, and that THE MONSTERS intellectual property—which includes Labubu—accounted for roughly 38% of revenue. The same report noted analysts’ concerns about relying heavily on Labubu-related income and the challenge of growing beyond it. These company-wide figures do not tell you what an individual Labubu is worth or what it might resell for.

What is a Labubu blind box?
A blind box conceals the specific collectible inside until it is opened. POP MART says customers cannot request a particular design when buying an official blind-box series. A box is therefore not a promise of the character, color or figure shown in a product image.
Some products are sold as blind boxes; other products may be individually selected where available. Before paying, check whether the exact design is identified, the product’s format and dimensions, any age guidance on that particular listing, the seller, and the total price. How can I tell if a Labubu is real?
The most dependable route is to buy from POP MART’s official website or stores, its ROBOSHOP vending machines, or an authorized online platform. POP MART says products bought through these channels are guaranteed authentic and verifiable. Its official authenticity instructions describe checking the applicable Box Label Code: scratch off the coating and enter the verification code under QR Verify. Follow the current instructions and contact POP MART support if the result is unclear.
A scan result needs context. POP MART distinguishes a first verification scan from repeated scans and scan-limit results. A QR code, a nine-tooth appearance, or a UV mark should not be treated on its own as proof that a particular listing is genuine.

What authorities have found about counterfeit Labubus
Documented safety concerns are about counterfeit products, not evidence that all genuine Labubus are unsafe. The findings below are specific to the relevant country, products and enforcement actions.
United States: import and small-parts rules
In an August 2025 warning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said investigators had identified multiple shipments of Labubu lookalikes attempting to enter the United States and requested seizure of thousands of units after finding violations of federal small-parts rules. The agency advised buyers to use trusted sellers, beware of unusually low prices, check safety labels and compare authenticity features. It described a holographic POP MART sticker, a scannable QR code and, on newer editions, a subtle UV stamp; it also said authentic dolls have nine teeth. These are agency-described checks, not a substitute for manufacturer verification.

United Kingdom: one tested counterfeit and seizure figures
A UK product-safety report dated October 1, 2025 concerns one identified counterfeit Have a Seat doll. Authorities said plastic in its hands and feet contained excessive phthalates and that the seized goods would be destroyed. That test result does not establish that every counterfeit has the same materials or that genuine products share the finding.
UK government figures published in 2025 describe enforcement seizures, not the global market or products already sold to consumers. The government reported 236,000 counterfeit Labubu dolls, representing 90% of the counterfeit toys in the cited figures; the same page gives a more specific total of more than 200,000 fake Labubus and 259,812 counterfeit toys seized. It also reported that 75% of seized counterfeit toys failed safety tests and that 46% of people who bought counterfeits reported serious problems, including breakage, unsafe labeling, toxic smells and reports of illness. Those two percentages concern counterfeit toys generally, not a Labubu-only sample.

Australia: potential choking and chemical hazards
Australia’s consumer regulator, the ACCC, warns that some counterfeit versions may be small enough to fit in a young child’s mouth or may have detachable eyes, hands or feet and poor stitching that create choking concerns. It also cites reports raising chemical concerns. The ACCC advises avoiding uncertain purchases and keeping questionable dolls away from young children; these are cautions about counterfeits and potential hazards.

If you bought through a marketplace or an unfamiliar seller, keep the packaging and purchase details, check the product through POP MART’s official process where applicable, and contact the seller or POP MART if you cannot resolve the result. Do not let a questionable item be handled by young children. Follow consumer-safety advice for your country: the CPSC guidance is for the United States, the product report and seizure figures are UK-specific, and the ACCC advice is Australian. Ireland’s CCPC provides buying and consumer-rights guidance relevant to Ireland and EU purchasing.
What is known—and not established—about Labubu’s value and safety
The cited sources do not provide a reliable current dataset of resale prices, so social-media claims or asking prices should not be mistaken for typical market value. They also do not establish a Labubu-specific clinical study or a safety finding about genuine dolls. Counterfeit warnings matter, but the documented cases should not be generalized to every product bearing the character.
