A crypto wallet migration can mean either restoring your existing recovery phrase in another app or moving assets to addresses controlled by entirely new keys. Those actions have very different consequences. Restoring a secure phrase changes the software interface but normally does not move coins or tokens. Creating fresh keys and sending assets to them is a true key rotation: it requires on-chain transactions, network fees and a complete inventory of what the old wallet controls.
You usually do not need new keys after buying a phone, reinstalling a wallet app or preferring a different compatible interface. You do need fresh keys when a recovery phrase or private key may have been exposed, unauthorized transactions appear, or you deliberately want to replace the old key set.

Wallet migration has two different meanings
The phrase “wallet migration” is often used for two jobs that should never be confused.
Restoring the same keys in another app
A self-custody wallet is fundamentally a set of cryptographic keys, not the mobile app or browser extension displaying them. If you still have the original recovery phrase and it has remained private, you can often restore that phrase in a compatible wallet application. The restored accounts generate the same addresses, so the assets remain where they were. No blockchain transaction occurs merely because you installed a new app or imported a phrase.

This is the appropriate path when you have a new phone, deleted and reinstalled an app, or want a different interface. It restores access; it does not improve the security of a phrase that may already be compromised.
Moving assets to a fresh key set
A true migration, or key rotation, starts with a newly generated recovery phrase or private key and ends with assets sent to addresses derived from those new keys. The receiving addresses are different, and every transfer is recorded on-chain. You must pay the applicable network fee and verify that the destination supports each network and asset.
Creating a new wallet without transferring anything is not a migration. Likewise, importing the old phrase into a hardware device does not rotate keys: if the device is using the old phrase, the controlling keys are still the old keys.
| Situation | What changes | On-chain transfers required? | Typical action |
|---|---|---|---|
| New phone or app reinstall, phrase still secure | Access method and interface | No | Restore the existing phrase in compatible software |
| Switching to another compatible wallet app | Interface, and possibly which accounts are displayed | No | Import or restore, then add missing accounts |
| Suspected phrase exposure or unauthorized activity | Controlling keys and addresses | Yes | Create independent keys and transfer holdings |
| Intentional security rotation | Controlling keys and addresses | Yes | Plan and execute a new-wallet transfer |
| Unable to log in to a custodial exchange | Exchange account access | Not necessarily | Use the exchange’s official support and recovery process |
When you do not need fresh keys
A device or software change alone is not evidence that your keys were compromised. If your recovery method is available and has not been disclosed, restoring it is normally safer and simpler than moving every asset.
Replacing a phone
Install the wallet from a trusted source, choose its restore or import option, and enter the recovery phrase only inside the genuine application. Confirm that the expected addresses and balances appear. Do not type the phrase into a website, a search form or a support chat. A legitimate support representative should never need it.
Reinstalling after deleting an app
Deleting the interface does not delete blockchain accounts. The network continues to record balances at the same addresses. Reinstalling compatible software and restoring the phrase should recreate access, although you may need to add networks or accounts manually.

Changing wallet applications
Compatibility is more than whether two apps both advertise “seed phrase” support. Check the chains you use, the account type and the derivation path. MetaMask’s documented phrase import uses the default BIP-44 path; an account created under another path might not automatically appear after import. Separately imported private-key accounts, hardware-wallet accounts and accounts derived from another recovery phrase are not necessarily included in a single phrase restore. Add those accounts through the new wallet’s supported import process, without exposing sensitive material to anyone.

A recovery phrase or private key was exposed
Exposure includes entering the phrase into a fake “verification” page, storing it in a cloud-synced note, emailing it, photographing it, pasting it into a support conversation or showing it to another person. Anyone who obtains it can generally authorize transactions without your permission. Treat a request for your phrase as a theft attempt.
MetaMask’s official warning states: “Never share your SRP or private keys with anyone — not even the MetaMask team, even though we will never ask you for this information.” Ethereum.org gives the same principle more bluntly: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
Unauthorized transactions or approvals appear
An outgoing transfer you did not authorize is a practical sign that the account, a connected signing device or an approval has been compromised. Reinstalling the app does not revoke the attacker’s ability to use the old key. Generate a new recovery method in a separate trusted installation and move assets to it as soon as your transaction plan allows. Review token approvals and smart-contract permissions as part of the response; a new address protects assets only after they are actually transferred.

You want deliberate key rotation
Some owners rotate keys as an operational policy, after a change in custody arrangements or before placing long-term holdings in offline storage. The reason can be prudent even when no theft is suspected. The mechanics remain the same: new independent keys, verified destination addresses, an inventory and fee-aware transfers.

How to migrate to fresh keys safely
Use this sequence for a true key rotation. Wallet interfaces change, so confirm the current labels and supported networks in the version you install.
- Create the destination wallet in a separate, trusted installation. Download the wallet through its official distribution channel. Generate a new recovery phrase or private key; do not import the old phrase. Write the recovery material offline and verify that you can recover the new wallet before funding it.
- Protect the new recovery method. Never save it in a cloud-synced note, email, screenshot, password-manager field intended for ordinary passwords or support chat. Keep backup copies where unauthorized people and ordinary device failure cannot reach them. Anyone with the phrase controls the wallet.
- Verify the destination address through a trusted channel. Compare the address on the signing device or wallet’s receive screen with the address you intend to use. Malware can replace copied addresses, so do not rely on a single copy-and-paste step for a high-value transfer.
- Build a complete inventory of the old wallet. Record holdings on every relevant chain, including native coins used for fees, fungible tokens, NFTs, liquidity-provider positions, staked or vested assets, and smart-contract ownership or administrator roles. A token balance visible on the home screen is not the whole wallet.
- Identify restrictions before sending. Check whether a liquidity position, staking position, vesting schedule or other contract lockup must be exited or has a waiting period. Determine whether an NFT collection, token standard or contract role is supported by the destination wallet. Some positions require an interaction with the original contract rather than a simple send.
- Match network and asset support. Select the exact chain shown by the sending wallet and confirm that the destination can receive that asset on that chain. A recovery phrase does not make networks interchangeable. Bitcoin uses separate network rules and address formats from Ethereum; EVM-compatible chains can share account use in appropriate cases, but that does not make every token or application portable. Smart-contract wallets can have a narrower supported scope than ordinary externally owned accounts.
- Reserve fee funds on each network. Every on-chain transfer consumes the relevant network fee, and many individual assets can produce many fee events. Keep enough of the network’s native asset in the old wallet to complete priority transfers. If the wallet is being drained by an attacker, prioritize valuable or easily transferable holdings and avoid wasting fees on low-value dust.
- Send a small test when practical. A test transfer can confirm the selected network and destination before you send a larger amount. This is cautious operating practice, not a universal requirement; a test still costs a fee and does not prove that a contract position or NFT transfer will work. Confirm arrival in the destination wallet and on the relevant chain explorer before continuing.
- Transfer assets in a deliberate order. Move liquid, high-value assets first when compromise risk is active, then handle NFTs, contract positions and other holdings according to their restrictions. For each transaction, check the network, destination address, amount and fee in the wallet’s signing screen.
- Re-add accounts and verify the result. Imported private-key accounts, hardware accounts and accounts from other recovery phrases may need to be added manually in the new interface. Confirm balances, NFT ownership, contract positions and administrative roles at the destination. Keep a private record of transaction hashes and what was moved.
- Retire the old wallet appropriately. After verifying the destination, disconnect the old wallet from applications and stop using its phrase. If compromise is suspected, do not keep meaningful assets there merely because the old interface still displays them.
What a complete migration inventory includes
Use a chain-by-chain checklist rather than relying on the wallet’s portfolio total.
- Native coins: needed both as holdings and as fee currency for transfers.
- Fungible tokens: record the exact network and contract address, not only the ticker symbol.
- NFTs: note the collection, token identifiers and the network on which each is held.
- Liquidity-provider positions: these are often represented by a contract position or receipt token and may need withdrawal before assets can move.
- Staking, lending and vesting: check lockups, cooldowns, withdrawal windows and any destination restrictions.
- Smart-contract ownership: identify multisig ownership, administrator keys, deployer roles and other permissions that cannot be transferred by sending a balance.
- Connected applications and approvals: list decentralized applications and token allowances, then review or revoke permissions as appropriate.
Network compatibility and derivation paths
Seeing the same recovery phrase in two applications does not guarantee that both will display every account. Wallets derive addresses using paths and account conventions. If the old wallet used a non-default path, an import may appear empty until you select the matching path or manually add the account. Hardware accounts and accounts imported from standalone private keys are separate from the phrase’s default account set.
Networks also impose distinct rules. Bitcoin addresses and transaction formats are not interchangeable with Ethereum addresses. EVM-compatible networks may let one account interact with several chains, but each transaction still targets a specific network and asset contract. Sending an asset on the wrong chain can make recovery difficult or impossible. Before signing, verify the network in both the sender and receiver and confirm that the destination wallet and any intended application support it.
Hardware wallets: useful option, not automatic migration
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep private keys offline while transactions are approved through the device. It can be a sensible destination for a fresh-key migration when offline key storage is your goal. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets in those terms, and MetaMask’s migration guidance includes sending to an address generated by a recovery phrase held only on a hardware wallet.
The device does not, by itself, solve a compromised-key problem. If you restore the exposed phrase onto the device, the same exposed keys still control the addresses. To rotate keys, generate a new recovery method on the device or in another trusted wallet and send assets to its new addresses.

Evaluate a hardware wallet by the chains and assets it supports, its recovery and backup process, device security, signing usability and the vendor’s current support. No single device should be assumed to support every asset or smart-contract workflow in a portfolio. Compatibility can change with firmware and wallet software, so check the current documentation before transferring valuable holdings.

Entering the phrase on a “support” page
Close the page and assume the phrase is compromised. Create new keys from a clean, trusted installation and move assets. Do not wait for the old app to show another warning.
Importing the phrase and assuming everything is there
Look for separately imported accounts, hardware accounts and non-default derivation paths. Add them manually only through the wallet’s documented flow. An empty view can reflect a display or path issue, not missing blockchain funds.
Sending on the wrong network
Stop before signing if the sender and receiver show different networks. If a transaction has already been broadcast, recovery depends on the destination wallet and network support; contact only the official support channel for the relevant service and never disclose the phrase.
Forgetting contract positions
A wallet dashboard can omit liquidity, staking, lending or ownership rights. Review the underlying applications and contracts, determine whether a withdrawal or role transfer is required, and budget fees for those interactions.
Running out of fee currency
Leave enough native coin in the old wallet for the planned transactions. If fees rise, prioritize high-value assets and reassess whether low-value balances are worth moving.
Confusing an exchange account with self-custody
An exchange login is controlled through the exchange’s account-recovery process, not by importing a blockchain recovery phrase. Use the exchange’s official website or support channel, and be alert for impersonators requesting passwords, codes or keys.
How to decide which path applies
Ask three questions before touching a wallet:
- Do I still control a private, usable recovery method? If yes, and there is no sign of exposure, restoring it may be enough.
- Has anyone else possibly obtained it, or has activity occurred without my authorization? If yes, treat the old keys as unsafe and rotate to fresh keys.
- Am I dealing with a custodial account rather than a self-custody wallet? If so, follow the provider’s official account-recovery process instead of attempting a seed-phrase migration.
The practical dividing line is control of the keys. An app switch changes how you reach the same addresses; a fresh-key transfer changes who can authorize transactions from those addresses. Verify compatibility, inventory every type of holding and account for fees before choosing the more disruptive path.
