1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not connect your wallet or enter a recovery phrase until you verify the exact domain through a route you trust. Open the wallet provider’s official site from a bookmark you saved or an address you type yourself, find its documented migration or restore instructions, and compare the complete URL. A legitimate migration workflow should never ask a website, support agent, or unrelated service for your seed phrase, recovery phrase, or private key. Treat urgent messages, guaranteed-recovery offers, requests to send crypto for “verification,” and links supplied in unsolicited messages as likely phishing attempts.
The safest answer in one minute
A wallet migration tool is legitimate only when you can independently connect it to the wallet provider’s verified documentation, the software comes through an authentic distribution channel, the workflow fits your wallet and chain, and you remain in control of your secrets. A logo, familiar name, search advertisement, app-store entry, social-media account, or directory listing does not prove that a particular link is genuine.

Use this rule before doing anything:
- Do not follow a migration link from an unexpected email, text message, advertisement, support direct message, or phone call.
- Open the provider’s known official website yourself, preferably from a bookmark created before the problem arose.
- Locate the migration, recovery, or upgrade instructions there and compare the full domain and every redirect.
- Never type a recovery phrase, seed phrase, or private key into a web form or disclose it to support.
- If the claim depends on an emergency deadline, ask the provider through contact details found on its verified site.
Ethereum.org’s security guidance puts the secret-handling rule plainly: “No legitimate service, support agent, or website will ever ask you for these,” referring to recovery phrases or private keys. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) likewise advises contacting a company through a website or telephone number you already know is real instead of using details in an unexpected message.

“Migration” can describe several different operations, and the word itself does not authenticate a service. A provider might be moving users to a new app interface, changing network support, replacing an obsolete software version, or explaining how to restore an account in a compatible wallet application. In self-custody, the provider generally supplies software that lets you manage keys; it does not take possession of those keys. A centralized exchange, by contrast, controls accounts held on its platform and has a different recovery model.

A genuine process should therefore explain, in ordinary language, what changes, which wallet and network are supported, what you will sign, and where your keys remain. It should not demand that you send coins to a new address, “validate” a wallet by revealing its phrase, or pay a stranger who promises to reverse a transfer. If the provider has not documented compatibility with your particular wallet, chain, and account type, stop rather than assume that a generic migration utility will work.
Seven steps to verify a migration site before using it
1. Stop the unsolicited conversation
Do not click the supplied link, scan a QR code, call the number in the message, or reply to the sender. The FTC has warned about fake wallet-update messages that create urgency and lead to imitation pages. An attacker can copy logos, use a convincing sender name, or place a fake result in a search advertisement while controlling a different domain.
2. Reach the provider through an independent route
Type the provider’s address yourself or use a bookmark you saved earlier. Do not use a bookmark created by the suspicious message. From the verified site, navigate to its help center or security documentation and look for the migration notice. If the notice is absent, assume the message is unverified and contact support using the address or number published on that site.

3. Inspect the complete address and redirects
Check the spelling of the registrable domain, not only the words before the first slash. Watch for extra hyphens, substituted characters, unusual top-level domains, and domains that merely contain the provider’s name as a subdomain or path. A lock icon indicates an encrypted connection, not an honest operator. Follow the navigation from the known official site and confirm that the browser remains on the documented domain or a clearly explained official domain.
4. Obtain software only from an authentic channel
Use the provider’s official download page or reach the platform’s verified app listing through a link on that page. Bitcoin.org warns that phishing wallets can imitate real software, appear as sponsored search results, or be placed in app marketplaces. Check the publisher name, package details, update history, and the provider’s own instructions rather than trusting an app icon. Do not install a browser extension or desktop program supplied by an unsolicited “support” contact.
5. Reject every request for a master secret
A recovery phrase is a master secret: anyone who gets it can access the wallet’s accounts. Never enter it into a migration webpage, send it in a chat, paste it into a support ticket, or read it to a caller. A phrase can be used to restore a wallet inside a compatible wallet application, but only follow the provider’s documented restore workflow on software you obtained independently. A site that blocks progress until you provide the phrase is not a safe migration route.

6. Test the claim against the transaction and recovery model
Ask what you are actually authorizing. A migration may require installing an update or importing an account into compatible software; it should not require sending funds to an address controlled by the operator. Blockchain transactions are generally irreversible. Ethereum.org and Bitcoin.org both advise checking addresses and transaction details before signing or sending. A support team cannot simply undo a confirmed transfer because you were deceived.
7. Get a second confirmation when anything is unclear
Pause and use support details published on the verified site. Do not trust a caller, direct message, or “agent” who contacted you first. Ethereum.org says its site will not contact users first. Ask the official channel whether the migration notice, domain, application publisher, and requested transaction are genuine. Until that independent confirmation arrives, leave the wallet disconnected and the funds untouched.
Red flags that should end the interaction
- Artificial deadlines: “Migrate within 30 minutes or your assets will be deleted” is a pressure tactic, not proof of a technical requirement.
- Secret requests: Any demand for a seed phrase, private key, wallet password, backup file, or screen recording of those items is disqualifying.
- Payment to unlock or recover funds: Sending crypto to “verify ownership,” pay a tax, or release a refund gives the operator irreversible control over the payment.
- Unsolicited personal assistance: A person who finds you through social media or a chat group and offers to migrate the wallet is not authenticated by helpful language.
- Branding without provenance: A copied logo, testimonial, follower count, or directory entry does not establish that the current domain is operated by the wallet provider.
- Unclear network or account support: A tool that never names the supported chain, account type, derivation method, or software version cannot be evaluated safely.
- Instructions to disable security: Requests to turn off two-factor authentication, antivirus protection, transaction warnings, or browser safeguards increase risk.
How to judge compatibility, custody, and maintenance
When the provider documents more than one legitimate route, compare the routes before choosing one. These questions identify differences that branding and search ranking hide.
| Question | What a trustworthy answer looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Who published the route? | The wallet provider’s independently verified documentation names the app, domain, and release or procedure. | It connects the tool to a source you verified rather than to an unverified message. |
| What secrets are requested? | The workflow keeps the recovery phrase and private key on your device and never asks you to disclose them. | Disclosure gives an attacker the ability to control the accounts. |
| Is your setup supported? | The provider identifies your wallet software, network, account type, and any version or hardware requirements. | A phrase or account format may not restore correctly in every wallet or chain. |
| Who controls recovery? | The documentation explains whether you are using self-custody software or an account held by a centralized platform. | Control, backup responsibilities, and support options differ fundamentally. |
| How is the software maintained? | The official channel shows active maintenance and a transparent security process; directory inclusion, if any, is treated as informational. | Maintenance and review reduce software risk but do not make an unrelated link authentic. |
| What will you sign? | The route explains the transaction or permission, destination, network, and expected fees before you approve it. | Signing can grant token permissions or transfer assets, and confirmed transactions generally cannot be reversed. |
Ethereum.org describes criteria for its wallet directory that include security testing and active maintenance, but it also says a listing is informational rather than an endorsement. Use such a directory for background context only; it does not prove that a separate migration service or link is affiliated with a listed wallet.
What to do if you entered a phrase or private key
Assume the secret is compromised even if no funds have moved yet. Do not keep using the exposed wallet as your long-term account.

- From a clean, trusted device, create a new wallet using software or hardware obtained through the provider’s independently verified official route.
- Move remaining assets to the new wallet. Check every destination address and network on the device before signing.
- For Ethereum tokens, review and revoke token approvals that could let a contract or spender move assets. Use trusted wallet and network tools and verify the contract and network before confirming a revocation.
- Change passwords for associated exchange or email accounts and enable two-factor authentication there. A wallet phrase is not replaced by changing an exchange password, so complete both actions where relevant.
- Preserve evidence such as the domain, messages, transaction hashes, and timestamps, but do not revisit the suspicious site or provide more information to its operators.
Do not pay a “recovery expert” who contacts you after the incident. Ethereum.org warns that recovery offers following a scam are a common second scam, and a service cannot reverse a completed blockchain transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you only connected or signed
Connecting a wallet is different from revealing its phrase, but it can still expose account information or prepare a permission request. If you connected the wallet, disconnect it through the wallet’s trusted controls and inspect the permissions or transactions you approved using tools you reach independently. If you signed a token-approval transaction on Ethereum, follow the official scam guidance to review and revoke approvals where relevant.
The available official guidance does not establish one universal cleanup procedure for every chain or wallet. Do not guess at a “one-click recovery” service. Identify the exact network, contract, permission, and transaction, then use the wallet provider’s verified documentation or a qualified professional reached independently.
How to evaluate a migration message, call, or support reply
Unexpected email or text
Ignore the link and open the provider’s site separately. Compare the notice you find there with the message, but remember that copied text is not authentication. Report the message through the platform’s abuse process if available and delete it after preserving evidence.
Search result or advertisement
Do not assume the first result is official. Sponsored placements can lead to imitation pages, and a high ranking says nothing about custody or security. Start from a saved bookmark or a manually verified address instead.
Social-media or chat support
Do not share account details, screenshots, or secrets. Find the provider’s support channel on its official website and open a new conversation there. A genuine support representative should not need your recovery phrase or private key to diagnose a migration issue.

Incoming phone call
End the call and dial the number published on the verified site if telephone support exists. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a professional tone does not prove identity. The FTC specifically recommends known-real contact routes for unexpected account or security claims.
Is a hardware wallet necessary?
Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as a way to keep private keys offline, and Bitcoin.org advises buying such devices from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Offline key storage can reduce exposure to malware and phishing, but it does not make a suspicious migration site safe and it is not required for every user. A hardware device still depends on careful verification of addresses, firmware, recovery backups, and the transaction shown on its screen. Never type its recovery phrase into a website because a device is involved.

Use this checklist immediately before installing, connecting, restoring, or signing:
- I reached the provider through a bookmark or manually verified address, not the message that prompted me.
- The provider’s own documentation names this domain, application, or migration procedure.
- I checked the full domain, spelling, redirects, publisher, and distribution channel.
- The documented route supports my wallet, chain, account type, and software version.
- No person or website has asked for my recovery phrase, seed phrase, or private key.
- I understand every transaction, permission, destination address, network, and fee I am about to approve.
- I have an independent support route if the instructions conflict or remain unclear.
If any answer is “no,” stop. Losing a few minutes to verification is reversible; disclosing a master secret or confirming a fraudulent transaction generally is not.
Bottom line
Legitimacy comes from independently verified provenance, documented compatibility, safe secret handling, and transparent transaction details—not from a logo, urgent warning, search position, or testimonial. Verify the exact domain through the wallet provider’s known official site, keep recovery phrases and private keys private, and treat any request to send funds or act immediately as a reason to pause. If you already disclosed a secret, move assets to a newly created secure wallet and address approvals and account security without paying a supposed recovery service.
