Before buying a stock affected by oil prices, identify how the company makes or spends money, then test how oil-price and margin changes could affect its cash flow, debt, and valuation. Higher oil does not automatically help producers or hurt fuel users: the outcome depends on the company’s business model, contracts, hedges, operating costs, customer demand, and ability to pass costs on.
1. Identify how oil prices reach the business
Start with the company’s latest annual and quarterly reports, especially the business, segment, and risk-factor disclosures. Determine whether it produces oil or gas, refines purchased feedstock, provides services to energy producers, transports or stores energy, or consumes fuel as a major operating cost. Also note which benchmark and product matter: crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, refined products, or a regional fuel price.

The exposure differs by business model:

For example, an SEC-filed producer report describes how oil, natural gas liquids, and gas prices received can affect revenue, profitability, access to capital, and growth. United Rentals’ 2025 annual report links oil and gas activity and customer spending to demand for its services and products. Those disclosures show why a company’s own segment mix and risk discussion are more useful than an industry label alone. SEC filings provide issuer reports; consult the company’s actual filing for its specific exposure.
2. Trace the effect through earnings and cash flow
Find the mechanism, not just a statement that the company is “sensitive” to energy prices. Follow the effect from the relevant price or margin to operating results, cash generation, and spending needs.

For producers
Compare realized prices with production volumes, operating costs, royalties, and transportation differentials. Review development spending and whether lower prices could make planned projects uneconomic or constrain funding. The 2025 producer filing in the SEC illustrates that commodity prices may influence cash flow, borrowing capacity, capital access, and project economics; it does not establish a universal threshold for a sound investment.
For refiners
Look at the relationship between refined-product realizations and crude or other feedstock costs, along with utilization, downtime, and other operating factors. PBF Energy’s 2025 annual report describes exposure to product and feedstock price spreads and additional market factors. A rising crude price by itself does not show whether a refiner’s margins are improving.
For service firms
Examine customer activity and capital expenditure, using any operating indicators the company reports. A customer that reduces exploration or production spending can affect service demand even if the service company does not own the oil being produced. United Rentals’ report is one example of a company describing a link between oil and gas activity, customer spending, and demand for its products and services.

For fuel users
Review fuel expense alongside the company’s estimates of fare, price, or other revenue recovery, demand, capacity, and operating responses. Ask how quickly recovery might occur and whether the company expects to adjust operations if fuel stays expensive. An estimate of cost recovery is a management assumption, not a guaranteed offset.
3. Read the hedge disclosures closely
Hedges can reduce or shift exposure, but they do not eliminate it. In the notes to the accounts and risk disclosures, check:
- The share or volume of expected production or fuel consumption covered, and the period covered.
- The instruments used, their reference benchmarks, prices, maturities, and cash-settlement terms.
- Whether the benchmark matches the company’s actual crude grade, regional price, or fuel costs.
- How hedge gains, losses, premiums, and mark-to-market changes appear in reported results.
- What exposure remains after hedging, including basis, timing, counterparty, and uncovered-volume risks.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that commercial participants may use futures and options to manage price exposure. Devon Energy’s 2025 annual report provides an issuer example of commodity hedging and sensitivity to forward price curves; it also cautions that sensitivity measures are not precise estimates of expected losses. Treat a derivative sensitivity as an illustration of stated exposure, not a forecast of the company’s results.

4. Check whether the balance sheet can withstand a downside
Oil exposure matters more when a company has little room to absorb weaker cash generation. Read cash-flow statements and debt disclosures together with management’s discussion. Check:
- Debt maturities, interest expense, and any variable-rate borrowing exposure.
- Cash and borrowing availability, including restrictions or conditions that could limit access.
- Planned capital expenditure and whether essential projects can be deferred.
- Whether operations can fund debt service and investment if prices, margins, or customer activity weaken.
- Whether dividends or buybacks appear supportable under a less favorable operating case.
Do not rely on a single earnings number. Compare operating cash flow with capital spending and financing needs, and consider how the company describes lower-price effects on borrowing capacity, project economics, and access to capital. The filings cited here do not support a universal debt ratio or price threshold that determines whether a stock is safe.
5. Put oil-price moves in market context
Oil prices respond to supply, demand, inventories, spare capacity, disruptions, and broader economic conditions. The EIA notes that near-term production and consumption may adjust slowly because changing capacity or fuel use takes time. A price increase associated with strong demand can have different implications for companies and the wider economy than one driven by a supply disruption.

Market prices can also move before a change appears in a company’s reported results. The EIA’s discussion of financial markets describes futures and options as tools market participants use to manage exposure. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s August 2026 Economic Letter discusses stock-bond and stock-oil relationships as context for assessing supply- and demand-side risks. These broad market relationships can change; they do not predict a particular company’s performance or future oil prices.

Build more than one plausible operating case using the company’s disclosures. Vary the inputs that actually drive its business, then compare the resulting cash generation and funding needs with the share price and your tolerance for risk.

- Producer: vary realized commodity prices, volumes, and costs.
- Refiner: vary product-to-feedstock spreads, utilization, and operating conditions.
- Fuel user: vary fuel costs, the amount recovered through revenue, and the timing of recovery.
- Service firm: vary customer activity and spending assumptions.
Use a downside, central, and upside case rather than treating one oil-price assumption as certain. Compare companies on business and segment mix, relevant benchmark and geography, price or margin sensitivity, hedge coverage, customer demand, operating flexibility, cash flow, capital needs, debt, liquidity, and valuation under comparable scenarios. The disclosures support these comparison dimensions, but do not establish a universal ranking of stocks. An oil-price estimate alone is not a basis for a target share price.

What a dated company update can—and cannot—tell you
United Airlines’ investor update filed July 15, 2026, is a useful example of the assumptions to inspect, not a template for every airline. The company based its third-quarter estimate on an average fuel price of approximately $3.69 per gallon using a Gulf Coast jet forward curve as of July 14, 2026. It said fuel had increased third-quarter costs by $575 million, or $1.12 in adjusted diluted earnings per share, since early July. It expected to recover 80% to 90% of the fuel-price increase in the third quarter and 100% by the fourth quarter of 2026, while noting elevated fuel could affect capacity.
These figures are United Airlines’ dated estimates and forward-looking statements. They show the questions to ask—what fuel assumption is used, how costs affect earnings, what recovery is expected, over what period, and what operating response may follow—but they are neither guaranteed outcomes nor a forecast for other airlines.
