Compare oil marketing companies on normalized, realized economics—not a headline crack spread alone. A crack spread is a market benchmark for refining economics; a company’s realized margin also reflects its crude slate, product mix, operating conditions, location, inventory accounting, and other costs. Define which businesses and regions you are comparing, align periods and accounting, and then assess both margin capture and the cash and balance-sheet capacity to withstand volatility.
Define what counts as an oil marketing company
“Oil marketing company” does not have one universal scope in the sources reviewed. A company may combine refining with wholesale or retail fuel sales, trading, pipelines, petrochemicals, or other activities; some markets also involve state obligations or compensation. Those businesses can have different exposures and reporting boundaries.

Before comparing peers, state the geographic market, fiscal period, currency, and business scope. Use like-for-like segments where disclosures allow it. If one company reports refining and marketing together while another separates refining, retail, and trading, do not present the figures as directly comparable without explaining the boundary difference. IndianOil’s risk disclosures, for example, describe exposures across procurement, refining, product marketing, freight, and working capital, illustrating why the company label alone is not a sufficient basis for comparison (IndianOil FY 2024–25 annual report).
Separate realized margin from the crack spread
A crack spread estimates the difference between market prices for refined products and crude oil. Marathon Petroleum describes it as an industry proxy for refining margin, not a company’s realized result (Marathon Petroleum 2024 Form 10-K). Its reported refining and marketing margin reflects product selling prices against crude, feedstock, transportation, and resale-product costs; operating and market-specific conditions also influence what the company captures.

So, when asking “what is the difference between refining margin and crack spread?”, the useful distinction is that the crack spread is a market reference, while realized margin is a company outcome calculated under a stated definition. A favorable benchmark does not guarantee a similarly favorable company margin.
What can widen the gap
- Crude slate and quality: Different crude grades and price differentials change feedstock costs, and not every refinery can process every grade equally well.
- Product yields and mix: The proportions of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other products affect the selling-price side of the calculation.
- Operations and maintenance: Throughput, utilization, unplanned outages, planned maintenance, and refinery flexibility can change the volume and value of products made.
- Location and demand: Local product prices, transport costs, supply constraints, and demand may cause company economics to diverge from a broad benchmark.
- Business scope: Trading, resale products, or marketing activities may be included in one reported margin and excluded from another.

Check inventory accounting before interpreting earnings
When crude and product prices move sharply, the cost assigned to inventory can change reported margins and earnings even when underlying operating activity is similar. FIFO generally assigns older inventory costs to cost of sales first; LIFO generally assigns more recent costs first where that method is used. The direction and size of the resulting difference depend on price movements, inventory levels, and the company’s accounting and adjustment methods.
Suncor presents margin views under both LIFO and FIFO and reports an inventory valuation impact, demonstrating why similarly named margin figures can differ depending on accounting basis (Suncor 2025 annual report). OMV explains that historical inventory costs can distort reported performance in volatile markets (OMV annual reports).

For each peer, record the reported figure and any company-adjusted or current-cost figure separately. Identify whether inventory gains or losses are included, and do not assume that an accounting gain is cash realized. If a filing does not provide a comparable adjustment, say so rather than estimating one.
Compare the exposures that transmit volatility
Crude-price volatility affects more than the selling-price-to-feedstock spread. Procurement timing, crude differentials, freight, product prices, derivatives, and the time between buying crude and selling finished products can alter both reported results and cash requirements. IndianOil identifies crude and freight price risks and describes sourcing diversity and refinery flexibility as mitigations (IndianOil FY 2024–25 annual report).

- Procurement: Review crude sourcing, grades, supplier concentration, and exposure to regional differentials.
- Freight and logistics: Check whether transport costs are included in the reported margin and how shipping exposure is managed.
- Hedges and derivatives: Identify what is hedged, the accounting treatment, and whether reported results include mark-to-market changes. A hedge can reduce a particular exposure but does not eliminate every economic risk.
- Trading and resale: Determine whether trading gains, losses, or purchased products sit inside the segment margin or elsewhere in the accounts.
- Working capital: Assess how much cash is tied up in crude, product inventories, and receivables as prices rise or fall.
Keep operating margin distinct from inventory valuation effects, derivative mark-to-market, and trading results whenever the company’s disclosures permit. Management explanations are useful context, but should be attributed to management rather than treated as independent proof of cause.
Assess operating performance and resilience, not just margin
A company with a strong margin in one period may still be more vulnerable to a reversal if it depends on a narrow crude slate, has constrained refinery operations, or needs substantial financing for inventories. Compare operating and financial indicators over the same periods, and retain each company’s definitions.

- Cash and liquidity: Operating cash generation, working-capital needs, and available liquidity.
- Leverage and debt service: Borrowings and interest coverage, using consistent definitions where possible.
- Inventory efficiency: Inventory turnover and the amount of cash tied up in stock.
- Investment demands: Capital spending and any other commitments that compete with liquidity during a downturn.
IndianOil reports measures including inventory turnover, borrowings, and interest coverage, but cross-company comparisons require checking how each ratio is defined (IndianOil FY 2024–25 annual report). A ratio with the same label is not automatically calculated on the same basis by every issuer.
A practical like-for-like comparison process
- Set the peer boundary. Choose the geography, business activities, and reporting segments to compare. Note activities or obligations that make a company structurally different.
- Align the reporting period and units. Use the same fiscal periods where possible; state currency, per-barrel or other units, and any exchange-rate conversion. Fiscal years can differ, so label any mismatch.
- Reconcile margin definitions. Record each company’s reported segment margin, included costs, segment scope, and unit. Keep company-adjusted figures separate and explain the adjustment.
- Match the benchmark to the business. Use a regional crack spread and crude/product basket relevant to the company’s locations and product slate. A benchmark that does not match those features may be a poor reference.
- Make inventory and derivative effects visible. Identify FIFO, LIFO, weighted-average, or current-cost measures where disclosed, and separate valuation and mark-to-market effects from operating performance when possible.
- Explain margin capture. Compare crude quality and differentials, yields, throughput, maintenance, market conditions, and freight exposure to understand why realized margins differ from a benchmark.
- Test resilience across periods. Review cash generation, working capital, inventory turnover, borrowings, interest coverage, liquidity, and capital spending over multiple comparable periods rather than ranking on a single quarter.
How to read the comparison without overclaiming
Present the reported numbers and their definitions before drawing conclusions. If periods, currencies, segment boundaries, or accounting methods differ, identify that limitation alongside the relevant comparison. Do not rank companies solely by a headline crack spread or one quarter’s margin: benchmark fit and company-specific operating conditions matter, and an apparent earnings advantage may partly reflect inventory accounting or other non-operating effects.
The evidence available from company filings supports a disciplined comparison framework, not a standardized global ranking. The reviewed companies operate in different markets and report across different periods and accounting bases, so conclusions should be limited to the peer set and measures actually made comparable.
