The claim was based on a real event, but it was widely overstated. Hurricane Helene temporarily shut down two high-purity-quartz operations near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, on September 26, 2024. The material is important to semiconductor and solar manufacturing because it is used to make fused-quartz components—especially crucibles used in producing silicon ingots and wafers.
However, the shutdown did not directly stop phone or PC production, and the reviewed evidence does not show that Helene caused a global chip or electronics shortage. Both local producers resumed shipments in October 2024.
The short version

What actually shut down?
It was not one standalone “quartz mine.” Two separate companies operating in the Spruce Pine area temporarily suspended operations: Sibelco, which produces its IOTA high-purity quartz, and The Quartz Corp, another high-purity-quartz producer.

The shutdown followed flooding, power and communications failures, damaged roads and bridges, and broader disruption across the region. The Quartz Corp said its facilities were stopped in preparation for the storm and that it initially had no visibility on when they could restart.
That distinction matters. The facilities were temporarily taken offline; they were not destroyed. The USGS later characterized the operational damage as minor, although the surrounding community and infrastructure experienced severe effects.
Why is Spruce Pine quartz important?
Quartz is silicon dioxide, or SiO2. Its strategic value comes from its exceptionally low impurity levels and from the suitability of local pegmatite ore for demanding industrial processing.
The USGS generally defines high-purity quartz as natural quartz containing fewer than 100 parts per million of total impurities—about 99.99% purity. Some ultra-high-purity products contain fewer than 10 parts per million of impurities, or approximately 99.999% purity. Requirements vary according to the end use.

Spruce Pine quartz is not simply dug up and shipped directly to chip factories. Processing can include crushing, washing, scrubbing, sorting, and additional physical, chemical, and thermal treatment. The finished material can then be used to produce fused-quartz components for high-temperature and high-purity industrial processes.

The region’s quartz is associated with pegmatite rocks that are also mined for feldspar and mica. The combination of ore quality, established processing facilities, industry expertise, and customer qualification makes the district unusually important.

Quartz ore → high-purity quartz → fused-quartz components and crucibles → silicon ingots → silicon wafers → semiconductor fabrication → chips → phones, PCs, servers, and other devices

So the quartz is a critical upstream material. It is misleading to say that the North Carolina mine directly manufactures a component found in every phone or PC. The more precise statement is that its products can be used in equipment and crucibles involved in making the silicon wafers from which many chips are manufactured.
Timeline of the Helene disruption
- September 26, 2024: Both Spruce Pine high-purity-quartz producers stopped operations as Helene approached.
- Early October: Reports highlighted the potential vulnerability of semiconductor and solar supply chains while the companies assessed damage and infrastructure conditions.
- October 10: Sibelco announced that production and customer shipments had restarted, with output progressively ramping up.
- October 23: The Quartz Corp announced a phased return to operations and said its assets were largely preserved.
- Later USGS assessment: Both U.S. producers ramped back to full capacity and resumed shipments during October.

Did the shutdown cause a chip shortage?
No documented phone, PC, or semiconductor shortage is supported by the reviewed evidence. The outage created a real supply-chain risk, but it was short-lived and did not become an immediate global electronics crisis.
Several factors helped limit the impact:
- Customers may have held inventories or stockpiles.
- Shipments resumed during the same month as the shutdown.
- The facilities were able to restart incrementally rather than being permanently destroyed.
- Other high-purity-quartz resources and producers exist, although they may not offer the same combination of purity, scale, economics, logistics, or customer qualification.
This is the difference between strategic importance and instant irreplaceability. Semiconductor materials often require extensive qualification, so replacing a supplier can be difficult and slow. But that does not mean a few weeks of disruption automatically stops consumer-device manufacturing.
Was Spruce Pine the only source?
No. Spruce Pine is widely regarded as one of the most important commercial sources of high-purity quartz, and the district has an unusual concentration of specialized production. But “the entire world gets its quartz from one mine” is an oversimplification.

According to the USGS, two U.S. companies were producing high-purity quartz around Spruce Pine in 2025. Other countries with relevant resources or production include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, and Russia.
Geological availability, however, is not the same as immediately usable supply. Alternative material may differ in impurity profile, processing requirements, cost, available volume, transport routes, or qualification for semiconductor applications. That is why a concentrated district can represent a meaningful vulnerability even when alternatives exist on paper.
Claims that Spruce Pine supplies a precise percentage—such as 70%, 80%, or 90% of the world market—should be treated cautiously unless the source defines whether it is referring to raw ore, processed high-purity quartz, ultra-high-purity grades, a particular end market, or the broader district.

Sibelco had already been expanding its Spruce Pine capacity before Helene. Its announced Expansion 1 was described as an approximately $200 million project intended to double installed high-purity-quartz capacity from the 2022 base, with completion targeted for 2025. The company also described a larger Expansion 2, preliminarily estimated at about $500 million over 2024–2027.
Those investments show that Spruce Pine remained strategically important and that demand extended beyond consumer electronics, particularly into semiconductors and solar photovoltaics.

But the latest development should not be confused with the storm recovery. On June 30, 2026, The Quartz Corp announced the indefinite closure of one production facility on Altapass Highway in Spruce Pine. The company attributed the decision to difficult high-purity-quartz market conditions, including persistent losses in the renewable-energy industry—not to continuing damage from Helene.
In other words, there are two separate stories:
- September–October 2024: A temporary weather-related shutdown followed by recovery.
- June 2026: A separate commercial restructuring linked to market conditions.
What the story really says about supply-chain resilience
The important lesson is not that one hurricane immediately halted global phone production. It is that a geographically concentrated upstream material can become a strategic weakness even when the immediate disruption is contained.
Resilience depends on more than whether quartz exists elsewhere. Manufacturers also need suitable processing capacity, tested suppliers, transport infrastructure, inventories, and materials that have been qualified for demanding production processes.
For consumers, that means Helene did not produce an evidence-backed reason to expect an immediate shortage of phones or PCs. For manufacturers and policymakers, it demonstrated why supplier concentration, disaster planning, stockpiles, backup logistics, and investment in alternative capacity matter.

But the viral version was imprecise: it was not one destroyed mine directly making phone and PC parts, and the outage did not cause a documented global chip shortage. Production and shipments resumed in October 2024. The Quartz Corp’s 2026 facility closure is a separate commercial decision, not a continuing effect of Helene.
