Huawei and Qualcomm announced a patent licensing agreement on July 30, 2020. Qualcomm described it as a settlement of their licensing dispute and a new long-term global patent license that included a cross-license to certain Huawei patents. The public announcements do not disclose the full negotiated terms, so the deal’s specific royalty rates and complete duration remain unknown.
What did Huawei and Qualcomm agree to?
Huawei’s July 30, 2020 statement said the companies had reached a new patent licensing agreement and that Qualcomm received licenses under certain Huawei patents. Qualcomm’s more detailed description, in its fiscal 2020 third-quarter earnings release, called the arrangement a settlement and a new long-term, global patent license, including a cross-license to certain Huawei patents.

Qualcomm said the license applied to sales of certain Huawei wireless products beginning January 1, 2020. The public disclosures do not identify every covered product or patent claim, and they do not publish the agreement itself.
How the agreement followed the earlier license
Qualcomm’s 2020 Form 10-K says the previous license agreement expired on December 31, 2019. The company described the new license as applying to certain product sales from January 1, 2020, before the companies publicly announced the settlement in July.

What Qualcomm reported financially
Qualcomm reported $1.8 billion in fiscal 2020 revenue related to amounts due from Huawei under the settlement and royalties for Huawei sales in March and June 2020 under the new license. In the same Form 10-K, Qualcomm said the settlement amounts were incremental to $1.2 billion previously paid under two interim agreements.
These are Qualcomm’s accounting disclosures, not a public itemization of the contract price. The $1.8 billion figure combines settlement-related amounts and royalties for specified sales periods; it does not establish a per-unit royalty rate or disclose a complete payment schedule.

The public statements and Qualcomm filings cited here do not provide the full contract text, specific royalty rates, the complete duration, all covered patent claims, or a complete payment schedule. Qualcomm’s term “long-term” does not, by itself, establish a precise number of years. The disclosures also do not give a count of Huawei patents included in the cross-license.
Huawei’s broader patent portfolio is separate context
Huawei said in its March 2021 announcement of its 2020 intellectual property white paper that, by the end of 2020, it held more than 100,000 active patents in over 40,000 patent families worldwide. That is a company-wide portfolio figure, not the number of patents licensed to Qualcomm in the 2020 agreement.
The same 2021 disclosure announced a US$2.5-per-unit royalty cap for multi-mode 5G smartphones as part of Huawei’s broader licensing framework. It does not identify that cap as a term of the Qualcomm agreement, so it should not be used to infer the deal’s royalty rate.
