Hindustan Zinc reported higher mined and refined metal production in Q2 FY27, while Vedanta Power reported a year-over-year rise in power sales. The operating updates were published ahead of the Monday, October 5, 2026, market session; they explain why the shares were on investors’ radar, but do not establish how either stock traded that day.

What changed in Q2 FY27

The figures cover July–September 2026, the quarter ended September 30. They are company-reported operating metrics relayed by Upstox with PTI inputs on October 4, 2026, rather than independently audited figures in the reviewed report. Year-over-year comparisons are against the corresponding quarter a year earlier.

Business and measure Q2 FY27 result Year-over-year comparison
Hindustan Zinc mined metal production 271 kilotonnes Up 5%, from 258 kilotonnes
Hindustan Zinc refined metal production 264 kilotonnes Up 7%, from 246 kilotonnes
Hindustan Zinc saleable silver production 173 metric tonnes Up 20%
Hindustan Zinc wind generation 155 million units Up 17%, from 132 million units
Vedanta Power electricity sales 5,593 million units Up 26%, from 4,433 million units

Upstox’s October 4 report said Hindustan Zinc’s mined metal increase reflected higher ore production. It attributed refined metal growth to capacity unlocked through debottlenecking at Chanderiya and Dariba, the 160 ktpa roaster at Debari, and plant availability.

Hindustan Zinc: production and renewable generation

Mined and refined metal are different stages of output, so their growth rates should not be treated as interchangeable. The reported 271 kilotonnes of mined metal was up 5%, while refined metal reached 264 kilotonnes, up 7%. The report linked the faster refined-metal increase to debottlenecking and plant availability rather than identifying a single cause.

Saleable silver production rose 20% to 173 metric tonnes. Wind generation rose 17% to 155 million units from 132 million units. These are separate operating measures: the first is production of a saleable metal, and the second is electricity generated from wind.

Vedanta Power: sales growth and H1 performance

Vedanta Power sold 5,593 million units in Q2 FY27, up 26% year over year from 4,433 million units. For the first half of FY27, sales were 10,817 million units, up 32%. H1 is a cumulative six-month measure, not a second quarterly comparison.

The company’s stated drivers included stronger plant performance and availability, a turnaround at Jharsuguda Thermal Plant, and increased sales from Meenakshi Energy. Meenakshi Energy’s Q2 sales increased 111% to 1,470 million units; its H1 sales increased 160% to 2,820 million units, according to the same Upstox report.

Other Vedanta group figures: useful context, not these companies’ results

Other businesses also reported operating updates. Vedanta Aluminium Metal reported quarterly aluminium production of 649 kilotonnes, described as a record. Vedanta Oil and Gas reported average daily gross operated production of 72.2 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, down 19% year over year. These figures relate to different group businesses; they should not be attributed to Hindustan Zinc or Vedanta Power.

The coverage included updates from Vedanta Limited, Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta Power, Vedanta Iron and Steel, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, and Vedanta Oil and Gas. One reported comparison for Vedanta Iron and Steel is internally inconsistent: the 5.2 million dry metric tonnes of saleable ore cited for Q2 cannot be 13% below the stated year-ago figure of 1.75 million. Mint separately reported that a 49% fall in Karnataka ore production dragged saleable ore down 13%, but did not confirm that comparison base. The conflicting 1.75 million figure should not be treated as settled without the original company filing. See Mint’s October 4 coverage.

What the updates do—and do not—say about the shares

Upstox framed the updates as likely to put the group companies on investors’ radar on Monday, October 5. That is a pre-session observation, not a report of realized share-price performance. The cited coverage supplies no dated October 5 trading data, so it cannot show whether the shares rose or fell in response.

Operating growth is one input for investors, not a standalone valuation or investment conclusion. The updates describe production, generation and sales; they do not by themselves establish future earnings, cash flow, valuation, or which group share is preferable. Mint also reported named analysts’ preferences and price views. Those are attributed opinions, not company-reported facts or verified predictions.

Vedanta Power’s June 2026 demerger announcement described a rationale of giving distinct businesses greater management focus and allowing investors to choose businesses with different investment characteristics. The announcement also listed risks including standalone operating history, coal dependence, capital intensity, debt funding, liquidity, and related-party transactions. These are business and structural considerations, not outcomes that can be inferred from one quarter’s sales growth. Details are in the company-hosted demerger announcement.
