What Happens When You Sell Bitcoin? Taxes, Fees, and Settlement

A Bitcoin sale may credit an exchange balance without an on-chain transaction. See how payouts, trading and network fees, U.S. federal tax calculations, and recordkeeping fit together.

Selling Bitcoin can involve several separate events: a platform executes the trade, the proceeds appear as a fiat balance or are sent as a payout, and you work out any tax consequences. If you move Bitcoin to an external wallet, that is a separate blockchain transfer—not a necessary part of every sale. In the United States, selling Bitcoin for dollars generally creates a capital gain or loss, while fees and payout timing depend on the platform, payment method, and whether you make an on-chain transfer.

What happens when you sell Bitcoin?

A sale through a custodial exchange usually happens inside your account. The platform executes your order and credits your account with dollars or another fiat balance, or starts a payout if you choose that option. That trade does not necessarily broadcast a Bitcoin transaction to the blockchain.

  1. Place an order. You choose how much Bitcoin to sell and submit an order or accept a quoted trade price.
  2. The platform executes the trade. The execution method depends on the platform and order type. For example, Coinbase says trades from its Primary Balance execute through its central limit order book or competitive auctions. Its simple Trade quote may include a spread, and the charges shown at order time can depend on factors such as payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, and asset. Review the order preview; this is a platform-specific example, not a universal fee schedule. Coinbase’s pricing and fee disclosure explains its approach.
  3. Proceeds are credited or paid out. The dollars may first appear as a fiat balance in your account. You can then leave them there or request a withdrawal using an available payment method. Payout methods, charges, and timing vary by platform and location.

The key distinction is that selling in an exchange account and transferring Bitcoin on-chain are separate actions. You do not need to wait for a Bitcoin block confirmation just because you sold through a custodial exchange; a bank or other fiat payout follows its own process.

Which fees can affect what you receive?

There is no stable fee amount that applies to every Bitcoin sale. Check the trade preview and the withdrawal screen for the specific order, account, location, and payment method. A quoted Bitcoin price alone may not show the full cost.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Cost When it may apply What to check
Trading fee When the platform executes a sale. Look for the explicit charge in the order preview.
Spread When the quoted price incorporates a difference between the price at which an asset can be bought and sold. Compare the quoted execution price with the market price you are using as a reference; a quote may include a spread even if it is presented as a simple trade.
Cash-out or payout charge When you withdraw fiat proceeds from the platform. Check the charge and expected processing time for the selected payout method.
Bitcoin network fee If you send Bitcoin to an external wallet. This is a separate transfer, not an automatic consequence of an exchange sale. Review the fee shown when you initiate the transfer. It is tied to the transaction and network conditions, not simply to the BTC amount.

For example, Coinbase says it estimates off-platform network charges using prevailing fees and discloses the estimate when the transaction is made. Batching and network congestion can make the estimate differ from the final network cost. Coinbase’s explanation of miner fees describes that platform’s handling; other services may work differently.

What if you transfer Bitcoin before or after selling?

Sending BTC from an exchange to an external wallet adds an on-chain transaction step. Bitcoin transactions compete for limited block space, and fees can affect how quickly a transaction is confirmed. The fee is associated with transaction size rather than the value of the Bitcoin being sent. During congestion, a lower-fee transaction may wait in the mempool. Bitcoin.org’s fee explanation describes the fee market and confirmation priority.

Bitcoin.org says blocks are added approximately every ten minutes on average. That is a network-wide average, not a promise that a particular transfer will confirm within ten minutes. A confirmation means the network has consensus that the received bitcoins have not been spent elsewhere and are considered the recipient’s property, according to the Bitcoin.org FAQ.

That confirmation concerns the Bitcoin transfer. It does not determine when a bank receives fiat proceeds from an exchange sale. Conversely, selling BTC within a custodial account may not require an on-chain transfer at all.

Will you recognize a gain or loss when you sell Bitcoin for dollars?

For U.S. federal tax purposes, generally yes: the IRS treats digital assets as property, and says a sale of digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency requires recognition of any capital gain or loss, subject to limitations on deducting capital losses. This is the federal rule; state and other countries’ rules may differ. See IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions.

For a dollar sale, the basic calculation compares your adjusted basis with the amount realized. The amount realized is the cash received, plus the fair market value of any services received to effect the sale, minus digital-asset transaction costs allocable to that disposition. The IRS identifies transaction or “gas” fees, transfer taxes, and commissions as possible transaction costs. Costs of moving assets between your own wallets or accounts are distinguished from costs of a sale or disposition, so do not automatically treat every transfer charge as a sale cost.

In simplified form, gain or loss is the amount realized minus adjusted basis. Your basis is generally the tax basis of the specific Bitcoin disposed of, adjusted as applicable. Report the amounts in U.S. dollars. The result and its tax effect depend on your facts and applicable rules; this formula alone does not determine your tax bill.

How does the holding period affect the result?

The IRS generally classifies a capital gain or loss as short-term when you held the digital asset for one year or less before the sale, and long-term when the holding period is longer than one year. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date. The classification does not by itself establish your tax rate or net tax liability. See the IRS’s digital-asset transaction FAQs for the federal rules.

What records should you keep?

Keep enough information to identify what you acquired and sold, how you calculated basis, and how you arrived at proceeds. The IRS says records should include:

  • Acquisition date and time, and the asset’s basis and fair market value at acquisition.
  • Sale or disposition date and time, and the asset’s fair market value at disposal.
  • The money or property received, including sale proceeds.
  • Relevant transaction costs, such as fees or commissions allocable to the acquisition or disposition.
  • Records identifying the particular units sold if you use specific-unit identification.

For a cash purchase, an older IRS virtual-currency FAQ says basis includes the amount spent plus fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs. Check the instructions that apply to your tax year and situation. The IRS virtual-currency FAQs discuss basis and records.

For individuals, capital transactions are generally reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D, subject to an IRS exception when a broker provides Form 1099-DA with gross proceeds and basis information. Broker reporting is information reporting; it does not create the underlying tax obligation. Reconcile any broker form with your own acquisition and sale records rather than assuming it contains every detail needed for your calculation. See the U.S. Treasury announcement on digital-asset broker reporting and the IRS FAQs for relevant reporting guidance.

Do the same tax rules apply outside the United States?

No single tax answer applies everywhere. The rules discussed above are U.S. federal rules. As one example of a different jurisdiction’s guidance, HMRC says a person may need to pay Capital Gains Tax when they make a gain by selling, exchanging, or giving away cryptoasset tokens. That is not a full comparison of U.S. and UK law. Check the tax authority’s rules for your jurisdiction and tax year; the UK guidance is at HMRC’s page on tax when selling cryptoassets.
