Re:

What Happens to Your Phone Plan If Your Mobile Carrier Is Acquired?

A mobile carrier acquisition may leave your plan in place for now, but later changes depend on the deal, your agreement and the carrier’s notices. Here’s what to check before switching or cancelling.

Your phone plan does not automatically change the day your mobile carrier is acquired. Your price, features, account and billing may stay as they are for a time, or the new owner may later move customers to different systems or plans. What applies to you depends on the transaction, your service agreement and the carrier’s written notices—so check the details before changing plans or cancelling.

What happens to my phone plan if my carrier is bought?

There is no single outcome for every acquisition. The acquired service may continue under its existing name and account arrangements while the companies integrate. Later, the new owner may change account systems, network arrangements, billing or available plans. An acquisition alone does not establish that your monthly price or features will stay the same indefinitely—or that you must switch immediately.

For example, Verizon’s current Frontier acquisition FAQ says Frontier service and pricing will continue as normal for now, and that customers can continue to manage their account and billing through Frontier without taking immediate action. That is Verizon’s guidance for Frontier service, principally home internet; it is not a promise about mobile plans generally.

Will my phone bill go up or my features change?

Do not assume either that the acquisition raises your bill or that your old price and features are guaranteed to remain unchanged. Compare any notice or proposed offer with your current bill and service agreement. Check the effective date and whether it changes:

Do I have to switch plans after a carrier acquisition?

Not simply because the acquisition was announced. Whether a plan change is required, offered or optional depends on the carrier’s notice and your agreement. Read the specific terms before accepting a new plan or cancelling an existing one. In particular, check for deadlines, changes to service or payment, and the consequences of leaving while a device balance or contract term remains.

FCC rules sometimes discussed in connection with carrier transfers have a narrower scope than all mobile-plan changes after an acquisition. In FCC 01-156, the Commission addressed covered carrier-to-carrier sales or transfers involving preferred-carrier changes. It said affected subscribers should receive notice of the right to select another preferred carrier if an alternative is available, and that the acquiring carrier must take responsibility for associated carrier-change charges and disclose this in advance. The order also says subscribers with term contracts may be warned that leaving before the term ends could trigger termination penalties. See FCC 01-156, paragraphs 25–26.

The later FCC 04-153 discusses 30-day advance notice in the preferred-carrier sale or transfer context it addresses. That is not a universal 30-day notice rule for every mobile-plan change after an acquisition. The related regulation, 47 CFR § 64.1120, should likewise be read within its scope, not as a blanket guarantee that every plan remains unchanged or that every customer can cancel without cost.

Can I keep my number if my carrier is bought?

If you decide to switch providers, FCC consumer guidance says you can generally keep your number when you move to another provider in the same geographic area. Ask the new carrier to handle the port and confirm when the transfer is complete. Before switching, check that your phone is compatible with the new network and unlocked; the FCC notes that an unlocked phone might work on another network, but the prospective provider should confirm compatibility.

How to decide whether to stay or switch

Compare the service you have with the plan being offered, rather than deciding based on the acquisition announcement alone. Consider:
