A media merger changes who owns the services; it does not automatically change your app, price, or available shows. The new owner may combine apps or catalogs over time, which can make access more convenient but leave subscribers with fewer independent choices. In the current example, Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, and says its streaming products will eventually unify into one service. It has not announced the final service’s launch date, price, plans, or title availability.
What a media merger can change for subscribers
A merger brings companies under common ownership. The owner can then decide whether to keep their streaming services separate, combine their libraries, or migrate subscribers to a single app. Those are business choices, not automatic consequences of the merger itself.
For subscribers, the potential trade-off is straightforward: a combined service could offer more content in one place, while consolidation could reduce the number of separately owned services to choose from. Catalog size does not guarantee that every title will be available in every country or remain available indefinitely; licensing and later company decisions can affect what viewers see.
- Apps and accounts: Services may be combined, but migration steps and account arrangements depend on what the company announces.
- Shows and films: A larger combined library is possible; specific titles, regions, and availability dates need confirmation.
- Prices and plans: An owner could revise prices or tiers during integration. A risk or prediction is not a confirmed price change.
- Choice: If separate services are consolidated, subscribers may have fewer standalone options.
What the Skydance–Warner Bros. Discovery deal means now
Skydance announced on October 6, 2026 that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The company says the direct-to-consumer streaming products will “unify into a single service over time.” That is the company’s plan, not a published migration schedule or a guarantee about the final product. Skydance’s closing announcement does not specify a launch date, final price, service tiers, or title-by-title availability.

The announcement describes the combination as a way to build scale and improve streaming products. Skydance also projected more than $6 billion in run-rate synergies over three years. Those are company goals and financial targets; they do not establish that subscribers will receive lower prices, a better app, or any particular content outcome.
The deal’s path included a proposed Netflix transaction: Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 Form 10-K records an agreement to sell to Paramount Skydance on February 27, 2026, after the company terminated its Netflix agreement following a superior proposal. Earlier coverage discussing a Netflix acquisition scenario describes a superseded proposal, not the completed transaction. Warner Bros. Discovery’s SEC filing

Will streaming get more expensive after a merger?
It could, but the available announcements do not establish a deal-caused price increase or a final combined-service price. Prices, bundles, and plan structures can be reconsidered as services integrate, but subscribers should distinguish a concern about future pricing from a price that the company has actually published.
Before changing a subscription, check the service’s official account or billing notices for the effective date, amount, and whether the change applies to your plan. If an app migration is announced, confirm whether your existing subscription will transfer, whether you need to take action, and what cancellation terms apply. None of those final terms has been set out in the closing announcement.

What regulators decided—and what that does not promise
Regulatory decisions are specific to a jurisdiction, the evidence considered, and the markets examined. They address competition under the applicable review; they do not guarantee a low subscription price, a stable catalog, or a particular customer experience.
United States
On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said its eight-month investigation concluded, based on the evidence it received, that the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition or U.S. consumers in subscription video on demand, linear television, or theatrical film development, production, or distribution. This is the DOJ’s conclusion about those markets, not a universal consensus or a forecast of every subscriber outcome. DOJ Antitrust Division statement

Associated Press reported, citing streaming guide JustWatch, that Paramount+ and HBO Max together represented roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market. AP compared that estimate with 17% for Amazon Prime Video and 19% for Netflix. The figure is a reported market-share estimate, not a subscriber count or an official regulator measurement; it should be read with AP’s attribution and U.S. market context. What subscribers should check before making a decision
- Look for a confirmed change, not a forecast. Check official service notices for an actual migration date, price, plan, or catalog update.
- Compare what you pay with what you watch. A larger library matters only if it includes titles you want and they are available in your region.
- Check standalone availability. If the services remain separate during a transition, decide whether each subscription still earns its place in your monthly budget.
- Read account and billing instructions carefully. Confirm whether an existing subscription, login, or billing arrangement changes before canceling or signing up again.
AP’s pre-closing coverage described the subscriber tension behind the deal: a larger combined catalog can coexist with fewer platform choices, and critics raised concerns about upward price pressure. Those concerns are not evidence that prices have already risen because of the acquisition. Associated Press on what the proposed platform combination could change
