Dividends paid into a taxable brokerage account are generally taxable income for the year you receive them—even if your broker automatically reinvests them. Your broker usually reports them on Form 1099-DIV, but you must still report taxable dividend income if you do not receive a form. For a 2025 federal return, ordinary dividends go on Form 1040 line 3b and qualified dividends are also reported on line 3a; check the instructions for the tax year you are filing because form lines and rules can change.
How dividend income is treated
A dividend is generally a distribution a corporation or fund pays to its shareholders. In a taxable brokerage account, taxable dividends usually count as income in the tax year received. The account being a brokerage account does not itself make a dividend tax-free, and choosing to reinvest the payment does not change its tax status.

The Internal Revenue Service states in Publication 550 (2025), Investment Income and Expenses: “Even if you do not receive a Form 1099-DIV, you must report all your taxable dividend income.” The payer’s reporting form is useful evidence, but it does not replace the taxpayer’s responsibility to include reportable amounts on the return.
The amount of tax due is not the same for everyone. It depends on the distribution’s classification, whether a dividend qualifies for preferential rates, your taxable income and filing status, and potentially state or local rules and other circumstances. Federal guidance alone cannot determine a particular investor’s bill.

Ordinary and qualified dividends are related categories
“Ordinary” and “qualified” are not two amounts to add together. Ordinary dividends are the broader category; qualified dividends are a portion of ordinary dividends that may be eligible for lower federal tax rates if the requirements are met. Form 1099-DIV box 1b is included in box 1a, not added to it.
| Category | What it means | Federal tax treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary dividends | The broad dividend category generally reported in Form 1099-DIV box 1a. | Generally taxed at the taxpayer’s ordinary income tax rates, except amounts that qualify for a special treatment. |
| Qualified dividends | A subset of ordinary dividends that meets issuer, distribution-type and holding-period requirements; generally identified in box 1b. | May qualify for maximum federal rates of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on eligibility and the taxpayer’s income and circumstances. |
The 0%, 15% and 20% figures are maximum federal rate bands described in IRS Publication 550 (2025), not a promise that every qualified dividend is taxed at 15%. Which rate applies depends on the taxpayer’s taxable income and other facts. Ordinary dividends that do not qualify for the reduced rates are generally taxed at ordinary income rates.
Check the holding period before relying on the qualified amount
For common stock, the general test is to hold the shares for more than 60 days during the 121-day period that begins 60 days before the ex-dividend date. A share’s ex-dividend date is relevant because it helps determine the period over which the holding days are counted. The precise eligibility determination depends on the dates you owned the shares, not simply on the label the payer placed on its form.

There is a different test for certain preferred-stock dividends attributable to periods longer than 366 days: the general requirement is to hold the shares for more than 90 days during a 181-day period. Issuer and distribution-type rules also matter. Some distributions from real estate investment trusts (REITs) and regulated investment companies (RICs), for example, are not qualified dividends.
A payer may report an amount as qualified, but your own holding period or nominee status can affect whether you may claim qualified treatment for it. Review the relevant dates and the IRS instructions rather than automatically applying a lower rate to every amount in box 1b.
What Form 1099-DIV tells you
Financial institutions use Form 1099-DIV to report dividends and certain other distributions to both the taxpayer and the IRS. The IRS’s About Form 1099-DIV page explains the form’s purpose, while the Instructions for Form 1099-DIV describe how payers report amounts. The boxes matter: “distribution” on a statement does not, by itself, tell you how an amount is taxed.

| Form 1099-DIV item | How to read it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Box 1a: total ordinary dividends | Reports ordinary dividends, including reinvested dividends. It includes any qualified portion shown in box 1b. | Use it when determining the ordinary-dividend amount to report; do not add box 1b again. |
| Box 1b: qualified dividends | Identifies the qualified portion of ordinary dividends reported in box 1a. | Check that the shares and distribution meet the qualification rules before relying on preferential rates. |
| Other boxes | May report categories such as capital gain distributions, exempt-interest dividends, foreign tax, or nondividend distributions. | Follow the instructions for the specific box and the applicable return; these amounts do not all receive ordinary-dividend treatment. |
Compare each Form 1099-DIV with your brokerage activity and records. If a form is corrected, use the corrected information. If a taxable dividend is missing from a form, that absence does not erase the reporting obligation. Where the form reports another distribution category, use its specific instructions rather than folding the amount into box 1a by assumption.
Reinvested dividends remain taxable
Automatic reinvestment changes what happens to the cash after it is paid: instead of leaving the account as cash, it is used to acquire more shares or fund units. It does not undo the distribution. The IRS instructions for Form 1099-DIV include reinvested dividends in ordinary dividends, so a reinvested payment can still be reportable income for the year received.
Keep the statement showing the distribution and reinvestment. It helps reconcile the income reported on Form 1099-DIV with the securities purchased, and supports accurate records of what you received and reinvested. Reinvestment is not the same thing as a return of capital, which has a different tax treatment.

Not every distribution is an ordinary dividend
A brokerage statement can include several kinds of distributions. A capital gain distribution, exempt-interest dividend, or nondividend distribution may appear on Form 1099-DIV, but each has its own treatment and reporting instructions. Check the box and the return instructions for the relevant tax year instead of treating every cash payment as an ordinary dividend.
Nondividend distributions and basis
A nondividend distribution is generally a return of some of your investment basis rather than ordinary dividend income. It usually reduces your basis in the investment. Once basis has been recovered, further distributions are reported as capital gains. Because basis affects the gain or loss recognized when you later dispose of the investment, retain the applicable statements and track the adjustment rather than treating the payment as tax-free without consequence.

The IRS Instructions for Form 1099-DIV and Form 1040 instructions cover these separate distribution categories. If the form reports capital gain distributions, exempt-interest dividends, foreign tax or nondividend distributions, use the instructions for those boxes and follow the applicable return lines or schedules. The reporting location is not necessarily the same as for ordinary dividends.

Where to report dividends on a federal return
For a 2025 federal return, the IRS instructions direct ordinary dividends to Form 1040 line 3b and qualified dividends to line 3a. The qualified amount is shown separately even though it is included in total ordinary dividends. These line references are specific to the 2025 return; verify the current Form 1040 and its instructions for a different tax year.
- Collect the records. Gather each Form 1099-DIV, any corrected version, and brokerage records that help explain reinvestments or distributions not covered by a form.
- Separate the categories. Identify box 1a ordinary dividends and the box 1b qualified portion. Review other populated boxes individually rather than combining them with ordinary dividends.
- Check qualification. For amounts treated as qualified, confirm the relevant holding period and consider whether issuer or distribution-type rules affect eligibility.
- Enter the amounts on the applicable return. For the 2025 Form 1040, report ordinary dividends on line 3b and qualified dividends on line 3a. Use the instructions for the relevant year and for any other Form 1099-DIV boxes.
- Determine whether Schedule B is required. Apply the filing conditions described below; having a Form 1099-DIV does not automatically mean Schedule B is required in every case.
When Schedule B is generally required
Under the 2025 Instructions for Schedule B (Form 1040), a taxpayer generally must attach Schedule B when ordinary dividends exceed $1,500. The threshold concerns ordinary dividends, not the sum of box 1a and the included box 1b amount. Other filing conditions can require Schedule B even when the ordinary-dividend total does not exceed that threshold; one stated trigger is acting as a nominee for dividends that belong to another person.
If you received dividends for someone else and they are included on your information return, do not report them as though they were all your own income. Nominee reporting and Schedule B requirements can apply. Follow the current-year Schedule B instructions for how to identify and report the amounts. The $1,500 threshold and line references in this article refer to 2025 IRS instructions and should be checked against the year being filed.
Withholding, estimated payments and additional taxes
Taxable dividends can affect more than the line where income is reported. The IRS notes that taxpayers with significant dividend amounts may be subject to the net investment income tax and may need estimated tax payments to avoid a penalty. Whether either issue applies depends on current rules and the taxpayer’s income, filing status and broader circumstances. The information here does not establish a personal NIIT threshold or calculate an estimated payment.
Consider your full tax picture rather than assuming that tax withheld from other income will cover tax associated with dividends. For a personal calculation, use the applicable year’s IRS forms and instructions with your complete income and filing details, or consult a qualified tax professional.
What this means for your tax bill
For a taxable brokerage account, the practical rule is straightforward: identify the type of distribution, report taxable income even when it was reinvested or no 1099-DIV arrived, and apply qualified-dividend treatment only when its conditions are met. Federal form instructions explain the reporting, but they do not determine state or local taxes or an individual’s exact liability. Those depend on where you file and your personal facts.
