Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG) pays distributions on a quarterly schedule. Vanguard’s 2026 schedule lists payment dates in March, June, September and December. For tax year 2025, Vanguard reported that 99.52% of VUG’s dividends were qualified dividend income (QDI). That fund-level percentage does not guarantee how every shareholder’s distribution will be classified: your Form 1099-DIV and your own holding period and tax circumstances matter.
How often does VUG pay dividends?
VUG generally distributes income quarterly. Vanguard’s 2026 schedule lists record, ex-dividend/reinvestment and payable dates in March, June, September and December. The schedule gives dates, not the amount of a future distribution, and a regular cadence is not a promise that each payment will be the same size.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For 2026, the listed payable dates are March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 24. These are dates on Vanguard’s schedule, not a guarantee that the schedule will never change; check Vanguard’s current schedule for updates. The schedule identifies VUG by CUSIP 922908736.
What the dates mean
A distribution schedule may show several dates for one payment. The record date identifies the date used to determine which holders are on the fund’s records for that distribution. The ex-dividend date is the date from which a purchaser is not entitled to the already-declared distribution; Vanguard’s schedule also labels this the reinvestment date. The payable date is when the distribution is scheduled to be paid. The schedule’s dates do not, by themselves, tell you the distribution’s dollar amount.

Distribution frequency is not yield
Quarterly describes how often VUG is scheduled to distribute income, not how much income an investor will receive. Yield and performance figures on a fund listing have their own measurement dates and can change. Neither a listed yield nor the quarterly schedule guarantees future income. VUG is listed in the stock large-cap growth category; a high percentage of qualified dividends does not mean the fund has a high dividend yield or that it is designed primarily to provide income.
Keep three measures separate: the number of distributions in a year, the dollars distributed, and the portion Vanguard classifies as QDI. A quarterly schedule answers only the first question. The fund’s QDI share describes tax character, not the size of the payout; a 99.52% QDI figure does not mean VUG pays a 99.52% yield. Likewise, a listed yield is a separate fund statistic with its own as-of date, not a promise about the next payment.
Are VUG dividends qualified?
Many were, according to Vanguard’s year-end figures for tax year 2025: Vanguard reported in 2026 that 99.52% of VUG’s 2025 dividends were qualified dividend income. In the same table, Vanguard reported 0.00% for qualified short-term capital-gains distributions. Those are separate classifications. The 0.00% figure is not the percentage of VUG’s dividends that were qualified.
QDI is a tax classification, not a promise about a particular shareholder’s return. The fund reports the composition of its distributions, but qualification for an individual can also depend on the applicable holding-period rules and the investor’s circumstances. Use the classification and amounts on your tax statement for the relevant year rather than assuming every payment—or every investor’s share of a payment—receives the same treatment.
The 99.52% figure is useful when assessing VUG’s past-year tax character, but it should not be treated as permanent. The figure applies to 2025 dividends and was reported by Vanguard in 2026. A later tax year can have a different composition, and an individual shareholder still needs to consider the rules for their shares. If you are comparing funds, line up their figures for the same tax year rather than comparing one fund’s estimate with another fund’s final results.

Why Vanguard’s estimate may differ from its later figure
Vanguard’s final estimated year-end table for 2025 listed a $0.52 income-dividend estimate for VUG and estimated that 98% would be QDI. Those were estimates, not final payment amounts, a projected yield or a guarantee. Vanguard’s later year-end QDI table reported 99.52% of 2025 dividends as qualified. The difference illustrates why an estimate should not replace the final tax information or the investor’s tax form.
Keep the figures attached to their time and meaning: $0.52 was an estimated 2025 income dividend, and 98% was an estimated QDI share in Vanguard’s 2025 year-end estimate. The 99.52% figure is Vanguard’s reported QDI share for VUG dividends in tax year 2025, published in 2026. None of these figures is a stated amount for a future quarterly payment.

An estimate is a planning reference, not the final amount credited to an account or a substitute for tax reporting. If the estimate and your completed Form 1099-DIV appear different, first make sure you are comparing the same tax year and the same category of figure. The estimated $0.52 amount and 98% QDI share are not interchangeable with the final reported QDI percentage.
How are VUG dividends taxed?
In general, qualified dividends may be eligible for the applicable long-term capital-gains tax rate. Ordinary or nonqualified dividends are generally taxed at ordinary income rates. A fund distribution can contain amounts with different tax classifications, so the tax treatment is not necessarily identical for every dollar distributed.
For a VUG shareholder, the fund’s QDI percentage is useful context, but it is not the investor’s tax rate and does not establish the shareholder’s final tax liability. Qualification involves holding-period conditions at both the fund and investor levels. Vanguard explains that the fund must meet the applicable holding requirement for the securities paying dividends, and that an investor must hold their ETF shares for more than 60 days during the 121-day period that begins 60 days before the ex-dividend date. Apply that rule to the relevant distribution and actual share-holding dates; do not assume that the fund’s published percentage automatically settles an individual investor’s qualification.

The IRS says the payer identifies on Form 1099-DIV which ordinary dividends are also qualified dividends. The applicable tax rules and reporting instructions can depend on the filing year, and the sources described here do not determine an individual’s federal or state tax bill. Income, filing status, residence, account registration and holding dates can all affect the answer. For an individual filing decision, consult the instructions for that tax year or a qualified tax professional.

The published percentage concerns the fund’s distributions for a particular year; it does not calculate an investor’s tax rate, account for their share-holding dates, or resolve state tax treatment. Treat the percentage as fund-level information and use the tax form and applicable filing-year instructions to determine what applies to your own return.
Where to find VUG dividends on Form 1099-DIV
Start with the Form 1099-DIV supplied by your brokerage for the tax year in which the distribution was paid. Vanguard says the form reports total dividends, qualified dividends and capital-gains distributions, and may also report foreign tax paid. The form is the practical record of the amounts reported for your account; compare it with Vanguard’s final fund tax information for the same year if you need to understand the fund-level classification.
- Choose the tax year. Use the brokerage tax form for the year the distribution was paid, rather than a schedule for a different year or a year-end estimate.
- Locate the dividend and distribution amounts. Review the form’s reported total dividends, qualified dividends and any capital-gains distributions. Do not treat a fund’s QDI percentage as though it were your personal dollar amount.
- Check the matching fund tax information if needed. Vanguard maintains tax information by year, including qualified-dividend figures. Compare figures for the same tax year; estimates and final figures can differ.
- Use the filing-year instructions. Follow the relevant IRS instructions and account for your actual holding dates and tax circumstances. A fund-level table does not calculate your personal tax liability.
Vanguard also says taxpayers are responsible for reporting taxable dividends and income even if a Form 1099-DIV is not issued. Reinvesting a distribution does not, by itself, mean the taxable income can be ignored in a taxable account. The forms that apply can depend on account type and recipient status, so the absence of a form should not be treated as proof that there is nothing to report.
As Vanguard puts it on its Form 1099-DIV page: “Don’t forget: It’s your responsibility as the taxpayer to report all dividends and income received on your tax return, even if a 1099-DIV form isn’t issued.” This is a reminder about reporting responsibility, not a calculation of what a particular person owes. Keep your brokerage statement and tax documents with the relevant tax-year information, particularly if you reinvested a distribution or did not receive a form.

How to interpret VUG’s dividend information
When deciding what a distribution figure means, separate four different questions: when VUG distributes, how much it paid, what portion the fund classified as qualified, and how the distribution applies to your own tax return. A date schedule answers the first question. A final distribution or tax record answers questions about amounts and classifications for a past year. Your account statement and tax circumstances determine what you need to report and how the applicable rules treat it.
For a comparison with another investment, compare the same tax year and the same kind of figure. Useful points include distribution cadence and actual distributions, the fund-level QDI share, your expected tax treatment in the relevant account and jurisdiction, investment objective and holdings, and expenses. Vanguard’s listing identifies a 0.03% expense ratio and places VUG in the stock large-cap growth category; listing information can change, so verify its current figures directly. The expense ratio and QDI share answer different questions and say nothing on their own about the amount of cash income an investor will receive.
Account type and jurisdiction belong in that comparison too. A taxable account, account registration and recipient status can affect which forms apply and what reporting is required. A tax-advantaged account may involve different reporting considerations from a taxable account, so do not assume a fund-level tax percentage alone tells you the result in every account. Exact treatment can also depend on income, filing status, residence and the holding dates for the relevant shares.
- For payment timing: consult the current distribution schedule, and distinguish the payable date from the ex-dividend and record dates.
- For a past year’s tax classification: use Vanguard’s final tax information for that year, not a preliminary estimate.
- For your return: use the brokerage’s Form 1099-DIV and the instructions for the filing year; fund-wide percentages are not personal tax calculations.
- For expected income: do not infer a future dollar payment or a reliable yield from the quarterly cadence or QDI percentage.
