What Happens to a Child’s Social Security Benefits When a Parent Retires, Becomes Disabled, or Dies?

A child may qualify for Social Security when a parent retires, receives disability benefits or dies, but age, school, disability, work-record and family-maximum rules determine eligibility and payment.

A parent’s retirement or entitlement to Social Security disability benefits can make an eligible child able to receive benefits on that parent’s work record. If a parent dies after earning sufficient Social Security coverage, an eligible child may qualify for survivor benefits. The child must also meet Social Security Administration (SSA) rules for age, marital status, school attendance or disability, and the amount payable depends on the parent’s record and other family members entitled on it.

How the parent’s circumstances affect a child’s potential benefit

These are Social Security benefits based on a parent’s earnings record, not a single benefit automatically paid to every child when a family experiences one of these events. The parent’s record must support the relevant benefit, and the child must meet SSA’s eligibility rules. SSA’s Benefits for Children publication, labeled May 2026, describes benefits for children whose parents are retired, deceased or have a disability.

Parent’s circumstance What may make the child eligible General statutory child rate
Retires The parent is entitled to Social Security retirement benefits, and the child meets the child-benefit requirements. One-half of the worker’s primary insurance amount (PIA).
Becomes disabled The parent is entitled to Social Security disability benefits, and the child meets the child-benefit requirements. Generally one-half of the worker’s PIA, subject to the special family-maximum formula for a disabled worker’s family.
Dies The parent had sufficient covered work for an eligible child to qualify for survivor benefits. Three-fourths of the deceased worker’s PIA.

The percentages are starting points in the statutory calculation, not promises of the amount a child will receive. The worker’s record, the family maximum and the number and circumstances of other eligible family members can affect what SSA pays. The Social Security Act and SSA’s family-maximum guidance set out the applicable calculations.

Who counts as an eligible child?

The main age categories are a child under 18; an unmarried child who is 18 or 19 and a full-time student in elementary or secondary school; or an adult whose qualifying disability began before age 22. The adult-child category can apply on a parent’s retirement, disability or death record if the disability continues and the other requirements are met. Eligibility is not determined by age alone: the parent’s qualifying record and the child’s circumstances both matter.

Children under 18

An unmarried child under 18 may qualify if the parent is entitled to retirement or disability benefits, or died with sufficient covered work. A child’s eligibility does not mean that every child in the household receives the same amount; SSA evaluates each claimant under its rules and calculates the family’s payable benefits using the relevant record and limits.

Students ages 18 and 19

Benefits generally stop when a child reaches 18 unless a student or disability rule applies. An 18- or 19-year-old may continue to qualify while attending elementary or secondary school full time. SSA instructs students and families to follow the attendance notice and provide a statement certified by a school official. Under SSA’s student guidance dated September 1, 2026, the reporting process refers to Form SSA-1372-BK. Benefits usually continue until the student graduates or until two months after turning 19, whichever comes first.

The student should follow the specific notice and certification instructions rather than assume enrollment alone keeps payments going. The rule described here concerns elementary or secondary school attendance; it should not be read as a general extension for college attendance.

Adult children with disabilities

An adult may qualify as a child on a parent’s record when a disability began before age 22 and continues, provided the other Social Security requirements are met. This is often called a disabled adult child benefit, but it remains a Social Security benefit based on a parent’s record. It is distinct from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a separate program with its own disability and income-and-resource rules. A person could need to consider the programs separately; eligibility for one does not by itself establish eligibility for the other.

Adopted children and other family relationships

SSA’s child-benefit guidance also recognizes that some stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren and step-grandchildren may qualify. Their eligibility depends on additional relationship and dependency conditions, so a family should not assume that living with or being related to a worker is sufficient. SSA may ask for records establishing the relationship or adoption and may request other evidence for the particular claim.

How SSA calculates the amount

The PIA is the worker’s primary insurance amount, the figure used in the benefit calculation. For a child of a living worker entitled to retirement or disability benefits, the general statutory rate is one-half of the worker’s PIA. For an eligible child receiving benefits after a parent’s death, the general statutory rate is three-fourths of the deceased worker’s PIA. Neither percentage should be used as a personal payment estimate without accounting for the rest of the family’s claim.

A family maximum limits the total benefits that can be paid on a worker’s record to eligible family members. If several people qualify, the amount payable to each may be affected by the total and SSA’s formula. A child’s benefit therefore cannot reliably be calculated by multiplying the worker’s PIA by the headline percentage alone. The result also depends on the worker’s record and the family members entitled on it.

2026 formula inputs are not benefit estimates

For the relevant 2026 retirement and survivor family-maximum calculation, the SSA Office of the Chief Actuary lists bend points of $1,643, $2,371 and $3,093 when the worker reaches age 62 or dies before age 62 in 2026. These are inputs to the formula, not a child’s individual benefit amount or a general monthly payment range. SSA distinguishes a special family-maximum formula for disabled workers, so these bend points should not be applied as if they were the calculation for every disability case. Formula inputs may change over time.

SSA’s official materials do not establish one average child payment that can answer what a particular family will receive. To get an individual determination, SSA needs the relevant work record and family details; the information here is not a substitute for that calculation.

What to do after retirement, disability entitlement or a parent’s death

Contact SSA to ask about a child’s potential claim tied to the parent’s record. The necessary evidence varies with the type of benefit and family relationship. Gather available documents, follow any instructions SSA sends, and respond to requests for additional evidence.

  1. Identify the basis for the claim. Determine whether the parent is entitled to retirement benefits, entitled to Social Security disability benefits, or has died with sufficient covered work. If the child is 18 or older, also identify whether the student or disability category may apply.
  2. Collect identity and relationship evidence. SSA says a family may need the child’s birth certificate or other proof of birth or adoption, as well as the Social Security numbers of the parent and child. For a stepchild, grandchild or other relationship with additional conditions, be prepared for SSA to request evidence relevant to that relationship.
  3. Provide evidence specific to the event or eligibility category. A survivor claim may require proof of the parent’s death. A claim based on a child’s disability may require medical evidence. These are examples of documents SSA identifies; the exact requirements depend on the claim.
  4. Complete school reporting when applicable. For a student continuing after 18, follow SSA’s attendance notice and school-official certification process, including the Form SSA-1372-BK reporting guidance. Tell SSA about circumstances that affect the student’s attendance or status as directed in its instructions.
  5. Answer follow-up requests. SSA may request additional evidence beyond the initial documents. Use the agency’s notice to determine what is missing and how it must be submitted; a document list is not a guarantee that a claim is complete.

Changes that can affect continued eligibility

A child’s eligibility can change when the child reaches an age boundary, stops meeting the applicable school rule, or no longer meets the conditions for an adult child whose disability began before 22. Families should pay attention to SSA notices and report information requested by SSA. In particular, a student’s benefit continuation is tied to the attendance certification process, rather than simply to having once qualified as a child under 18.

Retirement, disability and survivor benefits all rely on a parent’s record, but the event that qualifies the parent and the applicable family-maximum calculation differ. If a child’s situation changes, do not assume that a prior approval or payment amount settles whether benefits continue or how much is payable. Ask SSA to assess the changed circumstances against the child’s category and the worker’s record.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the statutory percentage as the check amount. The one-half and three-fourths rates are general statutory rates based on PIA; family maximums and family circumstances can change the amount payable.
  • Assuming every family relationship qualifies automatically. Stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren and step-grandchildren may qualify only under applicable additional conditions.
  • Missing the student certification step. An 18- or 19-year-old student must follow SSA’s attendance notice and school certification process; continuation is generally limited to graduation or two months after age 19, whichever is earlier.
  • Confusing a Social Security child benefit with SSI. A disabled adult child claim on a parent’s record and an SSI claim are separate matters with different eligibility rules.
  • Using a 2026 bend point as a personal payment figure. Those values are formula inputs for specified retirement and survivor calculations, not a child’s individual award.

Which details determine the answer for a family?

For a useful case-specific question to SSA, organize the facts that change eligibility or payment: the parent’s benefit status or date of death, whether the parent had sufficient covered work, the child’s age and marital status, current school attendance if the child is 18 or 19, and whether an adult child’s disability began before age 22 and continues. Also identify other family members who may be entitled on the same record, because the family maximum can affect what is payable.

Bring the identity, relationship, school, death or medical records relevant to the claim, but wait for SSA’s instructions about exact evidence and submission. Without the parent’s earnings record and the family’s circumstances, no reliable individual amount can be inferred from the statutory percentages or annual formula inputs alone.
