Re:

What Happens to a Bitcoin-Backed Loan When Interest Rates Rise?

Rising interest rates affect Bitcoin-backed loans differently depending on whether the contract uses a fixed rate, a variable index, or a flat fee. Collateral calls follow separate rules tied to Bitcoin value and the lender’s agreement.

Whether a Bitcoin-backed loan gets more expensive when interest rates rise depends on its contract. A fixed-rate loan generally keeps its stated rate for the agreed period; a variable-rate loan may reprice when its reference rate resets. Separately, a fall in Bitcoin’s price—or an increase in the debt balance—can weaken collateral coverage and lead to a margin call or liquidation if the agreement’s thresholds are crossed.

There is no universal rule for Bitcoin-backed loans. The signed agreement and applicable law determine the rate, collateral tests, deadlines, and lender remedies.

First check whether your rate is fixed or variable

Fixed-rate term loan

A market-rate increase does not by itself change the rate on a fixed-rate loan. For example, Strike says its term-loan APR remains fixed until the borrower refinances, consolidates, or closes the loan. That describes Strike’s terms, not every lender’s product. A fixed rate also does not remove other obligations: the borrower may still owe fees, meet scheduled payments, repay at maturity, and maintain sufficient Bitcoin collateral. Refinancing later may involve different terms.

Variable-rate loan or line of credit

A variable rate can move according to an index plus a contractual margin. Strike’s line-of-credit disclosure uses the U.S. Prime Rate plus a fixed margin and says recalculation may occur once per calendar quarter, on the last business day. The page displayed a 13.25% variable APR when accessed on October 4, 2026; that is a provider-specific, time-sensitive figure, not a typical or guaranteed rate for Bitcoin loans.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

If the reference rate rises, the APR may increase at the next reset under a contract like this. Strike says interest accrues daily on the amount drawn, not on unused credit. Check your own documents for the index, margin, reset date, accrual method, and whether the lender gives notice. A higher quoted APR is not, by itself, a margin call: collateral tests and remedies are separate contract provisions.

Flat-fee or prepaid-interest pricing

Not every product’s advertised cost behaves like a floating APR. Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd’s terms, last updated June 2026, describe a flat fee fixed when funds are drawn, including interest for the full term and an origination fee; the terms say early repayment does not reduce that fee. In this kind of arrangement, a later market-rate increase does not necessarily change the stated fee, but the actual loan agreement controls.

Rate changes and collateral calls are different risks

A collateral ratio compares the value of pledged Bitcoin with the debt, but lenders may use different definitions, price sources, and testing schedules. If Bitcoin’s value falls, collateral coverage can deteriorate even while the loan rate stays fixed. If interest accrues to the amount owed, a rising variable rate can also increase the debt over time and affect coverage calculations where the contract includes that accrued interest.

Do not assume every lender includes unpaid interest in collateral calculations or values Bitcoin at the same frequency. The cited provider terms do not establish a universal treatment. Look for the specific valuation rule and ask how the outstanding balance is calculated for margin purposes.

Thresholds and cure periods are contract-specific

The following examples use different products and ratio definitions. They are not market standards and should not be compared as if each threshold measured the same thing.

Example Published or disclosed terms Important qualification
Lantern Finance Its rate page lists up to 50% maximum LTV, a 72-hour grace period after a margin call, and possible liquidation if LTV exceeds 75% after that period. Terms on the page were last updated June 26, 2026. Eligibility, jurisdiction, collateral, and the signed agreement matter.
Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd Its June 2026 terms list a 70% margin-call threshold and an 80% liquidation threshold. The company says the individual loan agreement prevails; these thresholds are provider-specific.
USBC corporate loan disclosure A 2026 SEC-filed agreement describes a 150% initial margin ratio, a call at 130% or below, and possible liquidation at 120% or below if the deficiency is not timely cured. It provides a 24-hour cure period and specifies a Bitcoin spot-rate reference. This is an institutional loan, not a consumer benchmark. Its margin-ratio method is not interchangeable with another lender’s LTV.

A margin call generally requires action under the particular agreement, such as adding collateral or repaying part of the debt, within the stated cure window. If the borrower does not meet the requirement, the lender may have authority to sell collateral. The IMF explains that a lender may liquidate collateral to cover a loan when the borrower fails to repay; the exact trigger and process depend on the contract and applicable law.

What the lender examples show—and what they do not

These examples illustrate different contract designs rather than a single prevailing rate or threshold.

  • Strike: Its support disclosures distinguish a fixed-rate term loan from a variable-rate line of credit tied to U.S. Prime Rate plus a fixed margin, with possible quarterly recalculation. The 13.25% line-of-credit APR shown on October 4, 2026 is a dated provider figure. Strike says availability is limited to eligible applicants and supported U.S. states.
  • Lantern Finance: Its page, last updated June 26, 2026, lists a 10% starting APR for Bitcoin collateral and up to 50% LTV. Its rate and collateral terms depend on eligibility, jurisdiction, and the signed agreement.
  • USBC: A 2026 SEC filing describes a specific $5.0 million, one-year fixed-term loan at 8.5% annual interest, entered into on March 20, 2026, and maturing March 18, 2027. It is a corporate example, not a consumer loan offer.
  • Bitcoin Asset Reserve Ltd: Its June 2026 terms describe flat-fee pricing and provider-specific margin thresholds. Those terms state that the individual loan agreement controls.

What to check in your loan agreement

Before estimating the effect of a rate rise, locate the clauses that determine both the amount owed and what happens to the pledged Bitcoin.

Document detail What to look for Why it matters
Rate structure Fixed or variable rate; the index and contractual margin Shows whether market-rate movements can change the borrowing cost.
Reset mechanics Reset frequency and observation date; notice requirements; any cap or floor Determines when a variable rate can change and whether its movement is limited.
Interest calculation APR definition; accrual and compounding frequency; whether interest applies to drawn funds or the full credit limit Shows how the balance grows under your actual use of the loan.
Fees and early repayment Origination, servicing, repayment, refinancing, and early-payoff charges Fees or nonrefundable charges can change the total cost even if the headline rate does not.
Term and maturity Payment schedule, maturity date, and extension or refinancing provisions A fixed rate does not guarantee that you can extend the loan on the same terms.
Collateral measurement LTV or margin-ratio formula; Bitcoin price source and valuation times; treatment of accrued interest Defines how the lender assesses collateral coverage.
Margin calls and liquidation Trigger, notice method, cure deadline, acceptable cure, liquidation authority, and related fees Determines the steps and timing if collateral coverage falls below the required level.
Custody and asset use Custodian, segregation, any right to lend or reuse assets, and smart-contract arrangements Shows who controls the Bitcoin and how it may be handled while pledged.
Provider and jurisdiction Lender identity, governing law, location and eligibility limits, and insolvency or complaint arrangements Availability and legal protections can vary by provider and jurisdiction.

The IMF distinguishes centralized platforms, which may take custody or ownership of deposited assets, from decentralized platforms, where smart contracts may temporarily lock assets. That is a broad distinction, not a description of every provider’s arrangements; read the custody and asset-use provisions that apply to your loan.
