Under the Mega Millions prize schedule that began April 8, 2025, the prize is $10, $15, $20, $25 or $50, depending on the multiplier assigned to your play. The Mega Ball-only tier’s odds are 1 in 35. California prizes are an exception: they are paid pari-mutuelly and may differ from the national amounts.
How much do you win for matching only the Mega Ball?
The current national prize chart sets the Mega Ball-only prize according to the multiplier assigned to that play. Check the multiplier on your ticket; matching the gold ball does not guarantee that every winning ticket pays $10.
| Multiplier | Mega Ball-only prize |
|---|---|
| 2X | $10 |
| 3X | $15 |
| 4X | $20 |
| 5X | $25 |
| 10X | $50 |
These are the amounts on Mega Millions’ national prize chart; California pays prizes pari-mutuelly, so a California ticket may receive a different amount. See the official Mega Millions How To Play page and check the California Lottery’s Mega Millions information for the applicable state prize.
What are the odds of matching only the Mega Ball?
The odds of winning the Mega Ball-only prize tier are 1 in 35, according to Mega Millions’ current prize chart. That is different from the odds of winning any prize, which are 1 in 23, and the jackpot odds, which are 1 in 290,472,336. Each number answers a different question: a particular prize tier, any prize, or the jackpot, respectively.

Why older sources say the Mega Ball prize is $2
The current prize matrix took effect with the April 8, 2025 drawing. Under the previous game, matching only the Mega Ball paid $2. As a result, older articles, tickets and anecdotes may give a different amount; the rules era matters when checking a past win. Mega Millions outlines the change on its 2025 game-change page.
