A receipt improves your chances of getting a lost gift card replaced, but it does not guarantee it. In the United States, federal rules do not require a card issuer to replace a lost or stolen gift card, so the outcome depends on the issuer’s own policy. Some issuers will replace a card for its remaining balance when you present the original receipt. Others will not replace a lost card at all.
What the receipt does and does not do
The receipt is evidence. It shows what was bought, when, where, and for how much, which lets an issuer locate the transaction and confirm the amount that was loaded onto the card. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance, Avoiding and Reporting Gift Card Scams (page reports July 2023), advises readers to “always keep a copy of the gift card and store receipt,” and notes that the card number and receipt can help when you report a problem to the gift-card company.
What the receipt cannot do is create a right to a replacement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s official interpretation of Regulation E, section 1005.20, states that the section “does not require the replacement of a certificate or card that has been lost or stolen.” That leaves replacement to the issuer, and issuers differ.
Steps to take after you realize the card is missing
- Contact the issuer quickly. Use the official support channel printed on the card packaging, the receipt, or the company’s website. Ask whether the card can be blocked, whether the balance can be checked, and whether a replacement is possible. The FTC advises reporting a lost or stolen card to the issuer, but whether any value can be recovered is up to the issuer.
- Have the receipt and card details ready. Provide the receipt, the card number if you have it, and any activation or identifying information. Photographing both sides of the card and the receipt before you lose them is the easiest way to have these on hand.
- Ask whether the card has been used. Many policies depend on whether the card has been redeemed. Ask the issuer how it verifies that, and whether a replacement would be issued only for the unspent balance.
- Confirm who the issuer is. If you bought the card from a retailer but it carries another brand’s name, ask which company handles replacements. Best Buy’s published FAQ, for example, directs customers to the retailer where a card was purchased when the card was bought elsewhere.
- Get the answer in writing. Note the date, the name of the representative, and the reference or case number. If the issuer refuses, ask for the policy that supports the refusal.
How U.S. retailer policies differ
There is no national replacement standard for gift cards, so the practical comparison is issuer by issuer. The examples below come from the issuers’ own published pages, checked in October 2026. Terms change, so confirm them before relying on them.

The receipt is the common thread in the two issuers that offer any replacement path, but it does not override a refusal. An issuer that does not replace lost cards will not reverse that because you have proof of purchase.
Outside the United States
Rules differ by country and state, so these examples should not be read as U.S. law. In New South Wales, Australia, government guidance says a lost card usually cannot be replaced. Some retailers may replace it if the receipt is available and they can confirm the card has not been redeemed. New Zealand guidance says a lost gift voucher does not have to be replaced, with one possible exception: a voucher made out to a specific person that is not transferable.

Decision guide: what your result is likely to depend on
- The card is unused and the issuer replaces cards with a receipt: a replacement for the full balance is possible, subject to the issuer’s verification.
- The card has been partly spent: some issuers replace only the remaining balance, so the receipt helps establish the original amount.
- The issuer’s policy says lost cards are not replaced: the receipt may still help the issuer block the card or investigate fraud, but it will not force a replacement.
- The card was bought from a different company: the card’s brand and the seller may handle claims differently, so confirm which one is responsible before you wait on a reply.
- You are outside the United States: check local consumer guidance and the card’s terms; the U.S. position described above does not carry over.
Preventing a repeat loss
Once a card is lost, nothing can recover it, but a few habits make the next loss less costly. Keep a photo of the card and the receipt in a separate place, record the card number when the card is activated, and store the card in the same place each time, such as a wallet slot you check when you leave a store. Treat the card like cash until it is redeemed.
