When FedEx delivers a package to the wrong address, FedEx classifies it as a misdelivery. Its published remedy is retrieval: a customer-service case is opened, a driver is asked to pick the package up from the incorrect location, and delivery is reattempted the same day if possible, or the next business day. That is FedEx’s stated process, not a guaranteed recovery time. Its public pages do not promise that the package will be found, and they do not promise a replacement or refund.
First, confirm which situation you are in
Two situations look similar but follow different routes, so start by identifying yours.
- Confirmed misdelivery: the package went to a different address, or you learn that someone else has it. FedEx’s retrieval process applies here.
- Delivered but not found: tracking says the package was delivered, but it is not at your address and nobody near you has it. This is handled through FedEx’s missing-package report on the tracking page.
What to do, in order
- Check the delivery details. Open the tracking page and review any picture Proof of Delivery. Check nearby drop-off locations and ask neighbors whether the package was left with them. FedEx’s Belgium regional guidance recommends these checks before a package is reported missing.
- Report the package. For a U.S. delivery marked complete, go to tracking and choose Manage Delivery > Report Missing Package. Have the tracking number and the original destination address ready. - Contact the seller or shipper if the package is not recovered. Under FedEx’s U.S. claims guidance, you may ask the merchant for a replacement, ask the merchant to file a claim, or file the claim yourself. A shipper or merchant may send a replacement.
- Assemble your claim records. FedEx asks for the tracking or PRO number and supporting documents, such as an original purchase invoice, a retail receipt, or an online order confirmation showing payment. Source: FedEx’s U.S. FAQ on filing a claim.
- Check the claim deadline for your claim type before you rely on any timeline. The table below lists the deadlines FedEx publishes.
What FedEx does after you report
FedEx’s stated misdelivery workflow has three parts:
- A case is opened.
- A driver is asked to pick up the package at the incorrect location.
- Delivery is reattempted the same day if possible, or the next business day.
The public guidance does not state how long an investigation takes, does not guarantee that the package will be found, and does not guarantee a replacement or refund. Who can act, and what each party can do
- Recipient: can report the missing delivery, ask the merchant for a replacement, ask the merchant to file a claim, or file a claim personally, under FedEx’s U.S. guidance.
- Merchant or shipper: may file a claim and may send a replacement package.
- FedEx: investigates submitted claims and may request supporting documents. Its reporting instructions do not guarantee a claim outcome.
Claim deadlines by claim type
FedEx’s U.S. claims page separates deadlines by claim type. It does not list misdelivery as its own category, so confirm with FedEx which category your case falls under before relying on a deadline.

- Venezuela: the detailed wrong-location FAQ describes FedEx’s stated retrieval process. It is useful as an example of that process, but it is not a U.S. service guarantee.
- United States: the missing-package FAQ explains the tracking-based report flow described in the steps above.
- Canada: the Canadian FAQ states that its tracking-based reporting option is not available for FedEx Freight shipments.
- Belgium: the regional page advises checking nearby locations and Proof of Delivery before reporting a package missing. It directs a person who received someone else’s package to AskFedEx.
Before filing, confirm the applicable country and service on your local FedEx support page, or contact FedEx customer service directly.
How FedEx describes a misdelivery

How often misdeliveries happen
FedEx’s published pages do not give a misdelivery rate, and no reliable figure is available for how frequently wrong-address deliveries occur. Treat your case as an individual shipment to resolve through the steps above.
