The short answer: UScellular prepared layoffs while T-Mobile’s acquisition was still pending, and layoffs were reportedly scheduled to begin June 2, 2025. T-Mobile said it intended to offer jobs to at least a majority of UScellular employees—not every worker. The acquisition closed on August 1, 2025, and T-Mobile said it was adding UScellular employees to its workforce. However, the available public announcements do not establish the final number of offers, acceptances, layoffs or retained workers.
That distinction matters for employees planning around severance, unemployment benefits, health insurance and a possible job change. UScellular had approximately 4,100 employees at the time, but that was the company’s total headcount—not a confirmed layoff total.

The key dates in the UScellular-T-Mobile deal
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 28, 2024 | T-Mobile announced an agreement to acquire substantially all of UScellular’s wireless operations and selected spectrum assets. T-Mobile’s announcement and the FCC transaction description explain the scope of the deal. |
| Early 2025 | UScellular began preparing for workforce reductions connected with the proposed transaction. Contemporary reporting said layoffs were scheduled to begin June 2, 2025, with multiple call-center locations expected to be affected. |
| April 9, 2025 | Reporting indicated that T-Mobile intended to offer jobs to at least a majority of UScellular employees, but had not finalized staffing decisions. |
| August 1, 2025 | T-Mobile announced that the acquisition had closed and said it was adding UScellular employees to its workforce. |
| September 4, 2025 | T-Mobile issued a post-closing update discussing integration and increased synergy expectations. Those figures do not provide a final employee-retention count. |
The most important update for anyone reading the original layoff reports is that the transaction is no longer pending. T-Mobile completed the wireless-operations acquisition on August 1, 2025.

UScellular reportedly had about 4,100 employees around February 2025, according to contemporary reporting. That number describes the company’s approximate workforce. It does not mean that all 4,100 workers were laid off, or that all 4,100 were covered by a particular WARN notice.

The public information available here does not establish a definitive total for:
- workers named in layoff notices;
- positions eliminated before or after closing;
- T-Mobile offers made;
- offers accepted;
- workers hired into different roles;
- employees who remained with the infrastructure business; or
- workers who left voluntarily or found other employment.
Those categories should not be combined. A company headcount, a WARN-notice total and the number of people who ultimately lost employment can be very different.
Why were layoffs planned before the acquisition closed?
A pending acquisition can create overlapping departments and duplicate work before ownership formally changes. Customer care, retail, sales, administration, network operations and other functions may be reviewed separately as the buyer and seller plan integration.

The reported June 2, 2025 start date was a planned layoff date, not evidence that thousands of workers were definitively terminated on that date.
What did T-Mobile actually promise?
The reported commitment was that T-Mobile intended to offer jobs to at least a majority of UScellular employees. That wording is narrower than a promise to employ everyone.
It also does not answer several questions important to a worker’s finances:
Recommended Free Tools
- Was the offer for a comparable position?
- Did the job require relocation or a different schedule?
- Would pay, bonuses and benefits change?
- Would prior service count toward seniority or retirement benefits?
- Would accepting an offer affect severance or unemployment eligibility?
- How many people actually accepted the offers?
Unless an employee has a written offer or another binding employment document, a general statement about intended hiring should not be treated as a guaranteed job.

What did T-Mobile say after closing?
In its August 1, 2025 closing announcement, T-Mobile said it acquired substantially all of UScellular’s wireless operations, including customers, stores and specified spectrum assets. The transaction was valued at approximately $4.3 billion after adjustments.
T-Mobile also said it was welcoming UScellular employees. That confirms that at least some employees transferred or were hired, but the announcement did not publish a complete employee-by-employee outcome. It did not state the final number of offers, acceptances, layoffs or retained workers.
T-Mobile’s later September 4, 2025 business update discussed integration and expected synergies. Cost savings and integration plans can involve both hiring and reductions, so that update should not be used as a substitute for a workforce tally.

That creates several possible employment outcomes. A worker might have:
- received and accepted a T-Mobile offer;
- received an offer but declined it;
- remained with Array Digital Infrastructure;
- been laid off by UScellular;
- left voluntarily; or
- taken another job.
Employees connected with the continuing infrastructure business should not automatically be counted as T-Mobile hires or as T-Mobile-related layoffs.

Can former UScellular employees still apply to T-Mobile?
Yes. Former UScellular workers can review and apply for current openings through T-Mobile’s official careers portal. The site also provides a career-assistant function.
A current listing is not the same as a promised transition offer. Applicants should compare the role’s pay, location, schedule, benefits and service-credit terms with any documents received during the acquisition.
What the public record does—and does not—show
The documented record supports these conclusions:
- UScellular faced planned or anticipated layoffs before the acquisition closed.
- The company had approximately 4,100 employees, but that was not a confirmed layoff count.
- Layoffs were reportedly scheduled to begin June 2, 2025, including multiple call-center locations.
- T-Mobile intended to offer jobs to at least a majority of UScellular employees.
- T-Mobile completed the acquisition on August 1, 2025.
- T-Mobile said it was adding UScellular employees to its workforce.
- Array Digital Infrastructure continued separately with portions of the former business.
The available announcements do not establish a complete final employment ledger. As a result, claims that T-Mobile laid off several thousand UScellular workers, that all 4,100 employees lost their jobs, or that T-Mobile hired a specific percentage would go beyond the evidence cited here.
