The “Side-Eyeing Chloe” NFT sale is no longer upcoming news. Chloe Clem’s family auctioned a token tied to the famous still image on September 24, 2021, and reports put the winning bid at 25 ETH—approximately $74,000 to $75,315 at the time. The auction did not sell the original family video itself.
The video behind the meme
In 2013, Katie Clem uploaded a video of her daughters, Lily and Chloe, learning that the family was going to Disneyland. Lily reacted with visible excitement. Chloe, then about two years old, looked toward the camera with a sideways, skeptical-looking expression.

That contrast became the memorable moment. Contemporary reports said the video had accumulated more than 20 million views by 2021, although view counts can change over time.
The meme is based primarily on a frame of Chloe’s face, not on every second of the video. Internet users turned that frame into reaction images, GIFs and captioned posts expressing doubt, discomfort, apprehension or disapproval.

What was auctioned?
The family sold an NFT associated with the viral image—a still image or screengrab taken from the video. Decrypt described the file as a 660-by-371-pixel image.
That distinction matters. The transaction was not, based on the available reporting, a sale of the YouTube video, Chloe herself, the family’s entire online presence or every copy and derivative version of the meme. The auction reports also do not establish that the buyer received unrestricted copyright or all commercial rights in the image, video and later meme variations.
When did the NFT sale happen?
The family announced the auction on September 23, 2021, through Foundation. Coverage reported a starting bid of 5 ETH, valued at roughly $15,000 at the time.

The auction concluded on September 24, 2021. The winning bid was 25 ETH. Because Ethereum’s dollar price fluctuated, contemporary reports gave slightly different conversions:
| Detail | Reported figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Starting bid | 5 ETH | About $15,000 when announced on September 23, 2021 |
| Final bid | 25 ETH | Sale completed September 24, 2021 |
| Dollar equivalent | Approximately $74,000–$75,315 | Contemporary sale-day estimates, not a current valuation |
Decrypt identified the buyer as 3F Music, a Dubai-based music-production company. Another contemporary report also identified the company as the buyer.
Why did the family sell it?
The decision came during the 2021 wave of high-profile meme NFTs. Katie Clem reportedly became interested after seeing the sale of “Disaster Girl.” Coverage framed the possible proceeds as money that could help with Chloe’s future education, including college costs.

The family also described the auction as a family experience rather than only a financial transaction. Those statements explained the motivation at the time; they did not guarantee a particular long-term return. Reports said the family planned to hold the Ethereum, whose value could rise or fall sharply.

What does owning the NFT mean?
An NFT is a blockchain token linked to a digital asset or media file. The blockchain records the token’s creation and transfers, giving the holder a verifiable ownership record for that token.
Token ownership is different from several other rights:

Contemporary coverage compared the result with auctions for “Disaster Girl,” Doge, Nyan Cat and “Charlie Bit My Finger.” Those sales reportedly fetched substantially more, placing Chloe’s approximately $74,000 result toward the modest end of the headline-making 2021 meme-NFT market.

Such comparisons are not direct measures of copyright value. Auctions differed in the asset offered, edition structure, marketplace terms and rights language, while Ethereum’s exchange rate moved constantly. A higher token price did not necessarily mean the buyer obtained broader legal rights.

The lasting issue: a child’s viral image
Chloe was a very young child when the video was recorded and when the image became globally recognizable. Her family managed the auction, but the public record does not establish Chloe’s current views, finances or personal consent arrangements.
The episode illustrates why viral childhood content is difficult to take back. A parent may control an original file or auction listing, while copies and transformed versions continue circulating across the internet. An NFT can document one token transaction without removing that broader cultural circulation.
