Tata Consultancy Services announced on July 27, 2025, that it planned to reduce about 2% of its global workforce during fiscal 2026, or roughly 12,200 positions based on its workforce at the time. The company said the reductions would affect primarily middle- and senior-level employees. FY26 ended on March 31, 2026, but TCS has not disclosed a final count showing exactly 12,000 involuntary terminations. Its reported headcount fell substantially during the year, then rose in the quarter that followed.
What TCS announced
The July 27, 2025 announcement was a plan to reduce approximately 2% of TCS’s global workforce during FY26, the company’s fiscal year running April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026. With about 613,000 employees at the time, 2% works out to roughly 12,200 people. The announcement identified middle- and senior-level employees as the primary group affected; it did not say that only managers would be affected or provide a country-by-country breakdown. Reuters-syndicated coverage of the announcement reported the global scope and expected impact.

The figure described an expected workforce reduction, not a published tally of completed dismissals. The available public figures do not establish exactly how many employees were involuntarily terminated, voluntarily left, redeployed, or replaced by new hires.

Why TCS said it was restructuring
CEO K. Krithivasan described the issue as a combination of changing technology needs, skill mismatches and limited opportunities to redeploy some employees into suitable roles. He also cited the need for a more agile, future-ready workforce as TCS expanded into new markets. Employees who had spent extended periods on the bench were among those exposed to the changes. Moneycontrol’s account of the CEO’s explanation says TCS did not characterize the decision as a margin-driven measure.

AI was part of the context, not a confirmed one-for-one cause
TCS was adapting to technology changes and investing in AI, but the company’s explanation does not support saying that AI directly replaced 12,000 employees. Krithivasan said the cuts were not simply a result of AI-generated productivity gains; skill fit and redeployment constraints were also central. Moneycontrol’s contemporaneous report records that distinction.
Utilization and bench pressure
Moneycontrol also reported a TCS utilization policy of about 225 billable days a year and a bench limit of approximately 35 days. That provides context for the emphasis on deployment and bench time, but it does not prove that the policy caused every separation.

What happened to TCS headcount
TCS’s reported employee count declined during FY26, then rose in the following quarter. The company’s filings and investor materials show these quarter-end figures:

| March 31, 2026 | 584,519 |
| June 30, 2026 | 593,798 |
The June 2025 to March 2026 change was a net decline of 28,550 employees, about 4.7% of the June quarter’s reported headcount. That is larger than the announced 2% estimate, but it is not a layoff count: net headcount reflects departures and hiring together, and the company has not itemized the different kinds of exits. The March 2026 year-end figure is in TCS’s FY26 results; the June 2026 figure is in its investor FAQs.
The subsequent rise to 593,798 shows why the announcement should not be read as a promise that total headcount would permanently fall by exactly 2%. Role reductions, attrition, redeployment and recruitment can occur in the same period. Nor does the rebound disprove that employees were separated during FY26.
The financial cost and business context
TCS recorded a ₹1,135 crore severance provision in Q2 FY26, according to its earnings-call transcript. This is the provision reported for that quarter, not a verified total cost for all FY26 restructuring.

For FY26, TCS reported revenue of approximately $30.017 billion, an operating margin of 25%—up 70 basis points year over year—and annualized AI revenue above $2.3 billion in Q4. It also reported total contract value of $40.7 billion. These figures describe the business backdrop; they do not demonstrate that workforce reductions caused the margin increase. Pricing, utilization, currency, revenue mix, subcontracting and wage costs can also affect margins. The figures are from TCS’s FY26 results.

Workforce reduction did not mean a hiring freeze
TCS reported 69 million learning hours in FY26, 5.2 million competencies acquired and more than 270,000 associates with higher AI/ML proficiency. It also announced plans to create 5,000 jobs in the United Kingdom over three years in its Q3 FY26 business update. Those investments and hiring plans are compatible with reducing roles that are harder to deploy: workforce restructuring can involve training and recruitment for some capabilities while employees in other roles leave. The stated emphasis on middle- and senior-level roles, skills fit and redeployment suggests that experience alone was not a guarantee of placement. For employees, the practical signal is to pay attention to whether their skills match available client work and emerging technology needs; no single qualification can guarantee protection from restructuring. The announcement was global, but TCS has not published verified country-level figures, so it cannot establish an individual employee’s likelihood of being affected in a particular location.
For job seekers, TCS’s continued training, AI capability investment and UK hiring plans show that the company was not simply exiting recruitment. The available figures do not identify every role or geography being hired for, so they should not be treated as a guarantee of openings in a particular specialty or location.
How to read the “12,000 jobs” figure
- Announced plan: an approximate 2% reduction in TCS’s global workforce during FY26.
- Estimated scale: roughly 12,200 positions when calculated against a workforce of about 613,000.
- Observed headcount change: a net reduction of 28,550 employees from June 30, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
- Not publicly established: the exact number of involuntary dismissals, voluntary departures, retirements, redeployments and hires that made up those changes.
For affected employees, notice pay, severance and benefits depend on the applicable country, employment terms and individual circumstances. Contemporaneous reporting described additional support measures, but they should not be assumed to apply uniformly to every employee. Moneycontrol’s report discusses the reported measures.
