The Perth World Trade Centre was a proposed $1.85 billion mixed-use precinct, not a completed building. In January 2017, it advanced to detailed assessment; in May, the government said it was considering the bid. A 2018 secondary report later said the government would not take it to the next stage while METRONET planning affected the site. The proposal’s current or final status is not established by the available reporting.
What was proposed?
The Western Australian Government’s 18 January 2017 announcement described a private-sector proposal for a commercial, residential and entertainment precinct on 1.9 hectares between Perth and McIver train stations. The plan called for two towers of 36 and 75 levels, with commercial and retail space, residences and recreational facilities built above the existing rail line. The government put the proposal’s value at $1.85 billion. (Western Australian Government, 18 January 2017)
The bid concerned state-owned, rail-adjacent land. PerthNow reported on 31 May 2017 that developer Ghazi Abu Nahl had also paid $50 million for the former Myer Megamart site at 30 Beaufort Street; the World Trade Centre proposal sought an additional 1.9 hectares between the stations. PerthNow said negotiations over the bid’s status were then unknown. The $50 million figure is a historical reported purchase price, not a current valuation. (PerthNow, 31 May 2017)
What did “back on agenda” mean in 2017?
The phrase described renewed government consideration, not approval. On 18 January, the proposal had progressed to Stage Two detailed assessment under the state’s unsolicited-bids policy. The government said the proponent still had to demonstrate financial and technical capacity and enter a participation agreement. The announcement did not say those requirements had been met or that construction would proceed. (Western Australian Government, 18 January 2017)

On 31 May, Lands Minister Rita Saffioti told PerthNow the plan was being considered and that a decision was hoped for within six weeks. Those were forward-looking comments made at the time, not confirmation that a decision followed. World Trade Centre Perth director Neil Kidd said: “We have offered to work with them in the unsolicited bid process to accommodate their needs and our aspirations.” (PerthNow, 31 May 2017)
Premier Colin Barnett’s January statement said the investment demonstrated confidence in Perth and could stimulate trade and investment opportunities. That was the government’s promotional case for the proposal, not independent evidence of its likely or realised economic impact. (Western Australian Government, 18 January 2017)

What happened to the proposal?
A 2018 report by Customs Today said the McGowan government had decided not to proceed to the second stage because it could not fully consider development at the site while METRONET planning was underway. This is a secondary account of a pause in the process. The available reporting does not establish whether the bid was later formally withdrawn, rejected, revived or otherwise resolved. (Customs Today, 2018)
As a result, the 2017 announcement and headlines should be read as snapshots of a proposal under consideration, not proof that the project was approved or built. A current official disposition is not established in the sources cited here.
Rank #3
Was the Perth World Trade Centre built?
The proposal described in the 2017 announcements was not evidence of a completed building, and the cited 2018 report described the bid as not advancing while METRONET planning affected consideration of the land. The sources cited here do not confirm construction or provide an authoritative current status.
