Its familiar Fort Worth connection came later, when Fort Worth-based Tandy acquired the retailer in 1963. The large U.S. corporate store network eventually contracted through bankruptcy-era restructuring and store sales, but the RadioShack name continued as a brand and in international franchise operations.
Where did RadioShack start?
Radio Shack began in Boston in 1921 as a retail and mail-order business serving radio officers aboard ships and radio enthusiasts. Its founders were brothers Milton and Theodore Deutschmann, according to the company history in a bankruptcy exhibit filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and an archival history held by the Fort Worth Library.
The Boston origin can get lost because RadioShack later became closely associated with Fort Worth through Tandy. The two companies had distinct beginnings:
| Company | Origin and year | Early business | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radio Shack | Boston, 1921 | Retail and mail-order supplies for ship radio officers and radio enthusiasts | Tandy acquired it in 1963 |
| Tandy | Fort Worth, 1919 | Leather-parts supplier | Acquired Radio Shack; its corporate parent later took the RadioShack name |
The Fort Worth Library’s archival account says Tandy paid $300,000 for Radio Shack in 1963. Tandy changed its corporate name to RadioShack Corporation in 2000, according to the SEC-hosted bankruptcy exhibit and the library history. The name’s later corporate and geographic associations therefore do not change where the original retailer began.

How large was RadioShack before its store network contracted?
The scale of the former chain is clear from the figures in RadioShack’s bankruptcy exhibit. As of the company’s 2015 bankruptcy petition, it had more than 4,400 company-operated stores across the United States, Mexico and Asia, as well as more than 1,100 dealer and franchise stores worldwide. Those are historical counts from the petition date, not a current store total.
In March 2015, General Wireless purchased 1,750 stores out of bankruptcy, the Texas Office of the Attorney General reported. That transaction helps explain why the company’s retail presence did not simply vanish all at once. It does not establish whether any particular location is open today.

Did RadioShack disappear, or does the brand still exist?
The former corporate store network and the RadioShack name are not the same thing. RadioShack’s current website presents the name as an ongoing brand, with an emphasis on consumer electronics, components and DIY projects. That continuing brand use does not mean the large U.S. chain returned to its former size or that the original corporate retail business still operates as it once did.
RadioShack’s website says Unicomer acquired the El Salvador franchise in January 1998 and expanded across Central America and the Caribbean, with a presence in over 20 countries. Those are the brand’s own descriptions, not independently audited figures. Franchise activity in those markets is distinct from the old company-operated U.S. store network.

Why did RadioShack decline?
The available historical and legal records establish that RadioShack entered bankruptcy and that its store network contracted through bankruptcy-era transactions. They do not, on their own, establish a definitive explanation for why the business declined. It would be misleading to attribute the outcome to a single cause—or to present claims about competition, management, debt or changing consumer habits as settled without additional evidence.
