What Happened to Heath Ledger’s Daughter—and Did He Leave Her a Fortune?

Heath Ledger’s daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger, was reported to be the beneficiary of his estate after Ledger’s family said it had gifted the estate to her. His 2003 will, written before Matilda was born, reportedly named his parents and sisters instead. A 2008 estimate put the estate at more than US$20 million, but the exact amount Matilda inherited has not been publicly established.

What happened to Heath Ledger’s daughter?

Matilda Rose Ledger is the daughter of actor Heath Ledger and actor Michelle Williams. Ledger died in 2008, when Matilda was two. Williams and Ledger’s family have kept her private life largely out of public view; a 2025 report noted Williams had recently discussed Ledger on the Armchair Expert podcast, but did not establish details of Matilda’s current life or finances. VG reported on Williams’s comments in 2025.

Did Heath Ledger leave Matilda a fortune?

Contemporary reporting said Ledger’s family later gifted his estate to Matilda. In September 2008, ABC News quoted Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, saying, “There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda.” The same report described the estate as “believed to be worth more than $20 million.” That was a reported estimate, not a verified final accounting or a disclosed sum Matilda personally received. ABC News reported the family’s statement and estimate in 2008.

Why did Ledger’s will appear to leave her out?

The apparent contradiction comes down to timing. An Associated Press report republished by the Los Angeles Times said Ledger’s will was filed in 2003, before Matilda’s birth. It named his parents and three sisters, rather than Williams or Matilda. The report does not say the will itself named Matilda; the later account of her inheritance came from Kim Ledger’s statement about the family gifting the estate. The Associated Press report republished by the Los Angeles Times described the will.

In March 2008, Kim Ledger had already addressed concerns about the will’s omissions. CBS quoted him saying, “Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family,” and, “They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be.” Those assurances conveyed the family’s intentions, but did not disclose the amount or mechanics of any transfer. CBS News reported his remarks in March 2008.

What do the reported estate figures actually mean?

The two figures reported in 2008 refer to different things and should not be confused:

Figure What it refers to What it does not establish
US$145,000 The value of belongings listed in New York court papers, including a car, furniture and bank accounts, as reported by the Associated Press in 2008. It was not a valuation of Ledger’s entire estate. The report said the filing offered no indication of the estate’s total size. Source: Associated Press, republished by the Los Angeles Times.
More than US$20 million A contemporary estimate of the estate described by ABC News in September 2008 as “believed” to be worth that amount. It was not a verified final net valuation or a confirmed amount inherited by Matilda. Source: ABC News.

What is known—and what remains private

The public reporting supports a limited conclusion: Ledger’s will predated Matilda and did not name her, but his father later said the family had gifted the estate to her. The reporting does not establish a final probate accounting, the terms or timing of any transfer, or Matilda’s present financial position. An old estimate should not be treated as a statement of her current wealth.
