Chief Medical Investigator Heather Jarrell said at the briefing, “He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that is what resulted in his death.” The CBS News report on the official briefing describes the findings.
When did Hackman and Arakawa die?
The dates are investigators’ estimates, not confirmed exact times. Arakawa’s last known activity was February 11, 2025. Hackman’s pacemaker recorded cardiac activity on February 17 and an abnormal rhythm the next day; the medical examiner said February 18 was a reasonable estimate for his death. They were discovered eight days later, on February 26. The Associated Press timeline recounts investigators’ reconstruction.

Arakawa’s cause of death
Officials said Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The medical examiner classified her death as natural, according to the Associated Press report on her autopsy.
Officials said Hackman had advanced Alzheimer’s disease. The medical examiner said it was possible he was unaware that Arakawa had died; that was a possibility, not a proven fact. Earlier in the investigation, immediate carbon monoxide testing was negative.

How much was Gene Hackman worth?
Media coverage repeated an estimate of about $80 million, attributed to Celebrity Net Worth and reported by InvestmentNews in 2025. That figure is an estimate—not an audited accounting of Hackman’s assets, a publicly established final estate value, or a verified measure of what he is worth today. The InvestmentNews report notes the uncertainty around the figure.
A net-worth estimate and the value or distribution of an estate are different things. Legal analysis reported that Hackman’s will directed assets to his trust, but the trust terms were not publicly available in the cited coverage. A reported provision in a will does not establish who ultimately received assets or what the estate was worth. The University of Virginia School of Law analysis published by The Conversation explains what can and cannot be inferred from public information.
