Erin Heatherton filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2019, according to The Blast’s account of the court documents. The filing reported about $6,466 in assets against $560,242.13 in liabilities. Her own account, given to TIME in 2016, describes pressure over her weight before her final Victoria’s Secret shows and a difficult exit from the company. A January 2020 Chicago magazine profile offers the most recent view of her life that is available in the reporting. None of these sources shows how the bankruptcy case ended or what Heatherton is doing in 2026.

What the 2019 filing reported

The Blast reported the figures below from documents filed in her Chapter 7 case. Chapter 7 is a liquidation-type bankruptcy, in which a trustee may sell non-exempt property to repay creditors. The article reports what the filing listed at that time, not a final picture of her finances.

Item Reported figure Source and date
Assets $6,465.57 The Blast, 2019, from the Chapter 7 filing
Liabilities $560,242.13 The Blast, 2019, from the Chapter 7 filing
Average monthly income $1,089.91 The Blast, 2019, as stated in the filing
Average monthly expenses $1,074 The Blast, 2019, as stated in the filing
Income in 2017 $226,596 The Blast, 2019, attributed to the documents
Income in 2018 $18,000 The Blast, 2019, attributed to the documents
Income in 2019 through the filing period $2,820 The Blast, 2019; a partial-year figure, not a full-year total

The Blast also reported that the case was still ongoing on April 28, 2019. Nothing in the reporting cited here states whether the case later ended in a discharge, a dismissal, or some other result.

The debts named in the filing

According to The Blast, the filing listed four main debt categories:

  • Credit-card debt: $215,601.49
  • Line of credit: $201,000
  • Legal dispute with a former business partner: $100,000
  • New York state back taxes: $41,000

These four items add up to about $557,601. That leaves roughly $2,641 of the reported $560,242.13 in liabilities that the reporting does not itemize. The reporting also does not say how the legal dispute with the former business partner was resolved, or whether the back taxes were paid.

Reading a filing like this is useful for a few reasons. Compare liabilities with assets to see how much of the debt was unsecured and unpaid, and check whether income figures are full-year totals or partial periods. Here the 2019 income is a partial figure, so it should not be compared directly with the 2017 total. Bankruptcy case records are generally kept by the federal court where the case was opened and can be searched through that court’s electronic system.

Her account of leaving Victoria’s Secret

In a 2016 interview with TIME, Heatherton said: “My last two Victoria’s Secret shows, I was told I had to lose weight.” She also described depression and difficulty preparing for her final show in 2013. TIME reported that she parted ways with the company shortly after that show. Victoria’s Secret did not respond to TIME’s request for comment.

Heatherton also explained her decision to step back:

“I realized I couldn’t go out into the world—parading my body and myself in front of all these women who look up to me—and tell them that this is easy and simple and everyone can do this.”

These are Heatherton’s statements as published in 2016. They are her account, not a verified statement of company policy. The reporting does not connect her departure from Victoria’s Secret to the debts listed in the 2019 filing, and the two should not be read as cause and effect.

Life after the filing: the 2020 profile

A January 2020 Chicago magazine profile described Heatherton living in Chicago, returning to interests from her youth, and changing her exercise and health routine. The profile’s headline and summary text refer to quitting smoking and weightlifting. It is a snapshot from early 2020, roughly a year after the bankruptcy filing, and it does not describe her circumstances in later years.
