Which Elvis Presley JetStar is this?
The aircraft in this story is Lockheed JetStar N440RM, serial number 5016, built in 1962. It is distinct from N777EP, the separate JetStar associated with the name “Hound Dog II” and displayed at Graceland, according to an Elvis Presley history page. Graceland’s aircraft is not the 1962 N440RM.
How the 1962 JetStar became the Elvismobile
Elvis bought N440RM in December 1976, according to AOPA’s July 25, 2024, account. After the aircraft sat for decades in Roswell, New Mexico, Jimmy Webb bought it at auction. AOPA reported that Webb said he paid $234,000.
Webb attached the JetStar fuselage to a 1999 Freightliner motor-home chassis, creating a road vehicle he calls the “Elvismobile.” The conversion meant it was no longer a flyable jet in the configuration described by AOPA: the engines had been removed for display in a Tennessee museum. Webb told AOPA that noise-compliance issues, parts availability and other problems made returning it to flight impractical. Those are the owner’s stated reasons, not an independent airworthiness assessment.

Where was it last documented?
AOPA reported that the Elvismobile was driven 1,659 miles to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in July 2024. JetPhotos later recorded N440RM at Lakeland-Linder Regional Airport in Florida in a photograph dated April 6, 2025, and uploaded May 3, 2025. That is a dated sighting, not confirmation of its whereabouts on October 8, 2026. Its location and public-display plans after the Florida photograph are not established by these records.
How to keep the two aircraft straight
| Registration | Aircraft and reported fate |
|---|---|
| N440RM, serial 5016 | The 1962 JetStar Elvis bought in December 1976; later converted into the road-going Elvismobile. |
| N777EP | A different JetStar associated with Graceland and the name “Hound Dog II”; it is not the 1962 N440RM. |
AOPA’s account of the purchase, auction and conversion is available at AOPA. The dated Lakeland photograph is listed by JetPhotos.
