The Kang sisters had also declined Mark Cuban’s $30 million buyout question, choosing to keep building the company. That early growth is real as a reported milestone; it does not prove the founders’ pitch-era revenue forecasts came true or establish the company’s current financial scale.
What the Coffee Meets Bagel founders asked for on Shark Tank
In season six, sisters Arum, Dawoon and Soo Kang pitched Coffee Meets Bagel, seeking $500,000 in exchange for 5% of the company, according to ABC News’s January 2015 account. Mark Cuban asked whether they would sell the company for $30 million. The sisters declined. That was a buyout question, not a formal $30 million investment offer.
The business figures they shared on the show mixed past results with targets. The founders said the company had earned $87,000 in 2013 and about $270,000 in the first five months of 2014. They forecast $1 million for 2014 and planned to make $10 million in 2015 while spending on user acquisition and aiming to break even. The forecasts and plan were not confirmed results. ABC also reported that the company gave a user range of 100,000 to 500,000, rather than a single figure, and that each sister said she earned a $100,000 annual salary.
Why the sisters turned down the $30 million question
Dawoon Kang, then the company’s chief operating officer, said the founders believed Coffee Meets Bagel could become much larger and that selling at that point would mean selling themselves short. She also said they would have welcomed Cuban as an investor. Her explanation, reported by ABC News in January 2015, was that the sisters wanted to retain the opportunity to grow the business, not that they had accepted an investment deal.

The decision attracted criticism. In a July follow-up, Dawoon recalled receiving emails calling the sisters “crazy.” Arum Kang questioned whether the response would have been different if the founders had been men, saying they might otherwise have been called “Bold! Visionary! Brave!” for rejecting the proposal. These comments were reported by ABC News in July 2015.
Did Coffee Meets Bagel grow after Shark Tank?
Yes, at least by the short-term audience measure reported after the broadcast. ABC News said in July 2015 that Coffee Meets Bagel’s user base had more than doubled since the sisters appeared on the show in January. The report also quoted the founders saying the service produced about 500 couples per week, more than 200 marriages and 20,000 relationships. Those relationship figures were attributed to the founders; the report did not establish them as independently audited outcomes.

The distinction matters: a larger user base shows increased reach, not necessarily higher revenue, profitability or lasting company value. The $10 million revenue target for 2015 was a plan stated during the pitch, not evidence that the company achieved it. The cited 2015 reports do not establish Coffee Meets Bagel’s current user count, revenue, profitability or valuation.
How the app’s description has changed over time
ABC’s July 2015 report described a system in which users received a daily “Bagel,” had 24 hours to like or pass, and could enter a private chat after a mutual like. At that time, profiles were matched using Facebook friends and friends-of-friends. Those are historical details from the 2015 account, not confirmation of the app’s current mechanics.

Today, Coffee Meets Bagel’s official About Us page presents the service as a dating app for people seeking serious relationships. It describes daily curated batches, profiles that foreground values, education, interests and family plans, and tools such as icebreakers and chat limits intended to encourage conversations to move offline. The page identifies Arum Kang as CEO and co-founder and says the company began in 2012. This is the company’s current self-description, not independent evidence of comparative performance or user outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the Shark Tank story does—and does not—show
- It shows early momentum: ABC reported more than a doubling of the user base between the January appearance and July 2015.
- It shows the founders’ preference: the sisters said they wanted to build a larger company rather than sell at that point.
- It does not verify the pitch’s financial targets: the $1 million and $10 million figures were a forecast and a plan, respectively.
- It does not establish the company’s later financial trajectory: the cited accounts provide no current independent user, revenue, profitability or valuation figure.
So “blew up” is fair if it means a sharp burst of visibility and reported user growth after television exposure. It would overstate the evidence to treat that moment as proof of enduring financial success.
