New York’s labor department lists a Bowery notice effective November 1, while reporting later that month said the company was ending operations immediately. Coverage cited funding difficulties and an unsuccessful sale effort, but no company-issued explanation for the closure appears in the reviewed sources.
When did Bowery Farming close?
New York State Department of Labor’s 2024 WARN notices index lists Bowery Farming, Inc. in New York City with an effective date of November 1, 2024. That is an administrative workforce notice, not an explanation of the company’s finances.
On November 4, 2024, TechCrunch reported that Bowery was ceasing operations, citing PitchBook, internal documents and multiple employees. On November 7, Agriculture Dive reported that operations were ending immediately. The reviewed reporting does not include a direct public shutdown announcement from Bowery.
Why was Bowery Farming shutting down?
Agriculture Dive, citing PitchBook, reported that Bowery faced funding difficulties and had tried unsuccessfully to sell the company. That is attributed reporting, not an audited account or a cause Bowery confirmed publicly. Agriculture Dive said Bowery did not respond to its requests for comment.

The company had raised more than $700 million in venture funding, according to Agriculture Dive and TechCrunch, which cited PitchBook. Agriculture Dive described Bowery’s prior valuation as $2.3 billion; TechCrunch characterized its 2021 valuation as more than $2 billion, also citing PitchBook. These are reported figures, not audited financial statements.
How many workers and farms were affected?
Agriculture Dive reported that the shutdown affected 104 workers at Bowery’s Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, facility and 83 at its Nottingham, Maryland, farm—187 combined across those two locations. Its November 7 report also said no WARN notices had been filed at that point for Bowery’s New York and New Jersey locations.

New York’s WARN index separately lists the company in New York City with a November 1 effective date. The notice and the later reporting describe different parts of the workforce picture; neither establishes the eventual disposition of Bowery’s sites or assets.
What did Bowery Farming do?
Bowery was an indoor vertical farming company that grew greens and herbs in controlled environments. Its 2021 statement to a U.S. House hearing described crops grown hydroponically on vertically stacked racks under LED lighting, with sensors, computer vision, automation and robotics coordinated by its proprietary BoweryOS. The company described its farms as SQF-certified and made claims about resource use and harvest-to-shelf times; these were company statements, not independent evaluations.

In 2022, Georgia announced that Bowery planned a smart indoor farm in Locust Grove. The announcement characterized BoweryOS as combining software, hardware, sensors, artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine-learning models and robotics. The plan does not establish that the Georgia facility was operating when Bowery closed.

Retail reach figures differ by source, date and wording, so they should not be treated as a directly comparable trend. In March 2024, the Maryland governor’s office said Bowery products were available in more than 2,600 retail locations, including Whole Foods, Amazon and Walmart. Agriculture Dive’s November 2024 closure report described Bowery as selling through more than 850 grocery stores.
