AtlasGlobal, the Turkish airline formerly known as Atlasjet, stopped flying in February 2020 after a temporary suspension and brief return to scheduled service. The company said mounting costs and earlier losses had strained its finances; later court proceedings upheld its bankruptcy, according to a 2024 report.
AtlasGlobal at a glance
AtlasGlobal began operating in 2001 under the Atlasjet name, Anadolu Agency reported. The airline faced financial difficulties from 2018 onward, though published reporting does not provide a detailed account of its finances. Anadolu Agency’s February 2020 report said Turkey’s civil aviation authority confirmed that the company had filed for bankruptcy and that all flights were canceled.
What happened: a pause, restart, and final shutdown
- November 26, 2019: AtlasGlobal announced it would suspend all flights through December 21 while it restructured and worked to improve cash flow. It also said ticket sales would be closed through December 16. The announcement was reported by Ekonomim.
- December 2019: The airline resumed scheduled operations and reopened bookings before the announced December 21 end date, according to Daily Sabah.
- January 16 to February 9, 2020: EUROCONTROL’s February 6 industry monitor reported that AtlasGlobal again ceased operations during this period. Separately, Aviation Turkey reported that flights were canceled on February 12.
- February 14, 2020: Anadolu Agency reported that the civil aviation authority said AtlasGlobal had filed for bankruptcy and all flights were canceled.
So the November 2019 suspension was not the airline’s final cessation: AtlasGlobal returned to scheduled service in December, then stopped operating for good in February 2020.
Why did AtlasGlobal fail?
AtlasGlobal’s November 2019 explanation, reproduced by Ekonomim, cited accumulated losses and difficult economic conditions. The company pointed to security-related events and political conditions in 2015–2016, currency volatility in the second half of 2018, and higher logistical and operating costs after its April 2019 move to Istanbul Airport. It said the pressures had prevented it from recovering its 2016–2017 losses quickly enough and forced it to suspend flights to improve cash flow.

That is the airline’s stated account, not a complete independent finding about the cause of its failure. The available reporting does not establish how much each factor contributed or provide audited accounts, debt totals, or a breakdown of liabilities.
What the flight data adds
EUROCONTROL’s February 2020 industry monitor reported a 26% decrease in AtlasGlobal’s total flights in 2019 compared with 2018, citing the airline. That figure measures flight activity—not passenger numbers or revenue—and does not by itself explain the bankruptcy. See the EUROCONTROL monitor, dated February 6, 2020.

What happened in the bankruptcy case?
The airline’s operations ended in 2020, but the legal process continued. Türkiye Today reported that a bankruptcy decision was first issued in June 2021, reversed on procedural grounds in September 2022, and issued again in January 2023. The outlet said Turkey’s Supreme Court upheld the ruling on June 27, 2024. This chronology comes from secondary news reporting; the underlying court judgments are not available in the cited account. AtlasGlobal no longer operates flights. The reported bankruptcy and closure do not, on their own, establish what any individual passenger, employee, or creditor was owed or recovered; the cited accounts do not give those outcomes. Anyone dealing with an old ticket or claim would need to consult their own booking, payment, or legal records rather than assume the company still offers service.
