Why did they get married twice?
Riley’s reported explanation was that being together without being married felt odd after they had been accustomed to being husband and wife. As she put it, “I suppose the reason to get remarried was just because it felt silly to be together unmarried after having been married.” (The Independent)
That explains how Riley described the decision; it does not establish every reason behind the reconciliation. The public record does not support assigning a separate cause to either divorce.
Are Musk and Riley still close?
Public statements indicate that they remained affectionate and on friendly terms after their second divorce. In their 2016 joint statement, they said they would remain friends. In a 2022 interview, Riley called Musk “a great friend” and described a “very deep love and connection.” (BBC; The Independent)

In June 2024, Riley married actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster. The Los Angeles Times reported the marriage, and The Independent, citing Riley’s interview with The Times, reported that Musk attended the wedding and that Riley still loved him. (Los Angeles Times; The Independent)
These are signs of warmth at the times described, not proof of how often they speak or how they define their relationship now. Their current private closeness cannot be established from those public reports.
