Fortinet is a cybersecurity and networking company that sells tools organizations use to protect networks, connect offices and remote users, and help security teams detect and respond to threats. Its best-known product family is FortiGate, a next-generation firewall—but Fortinet is broader than a firewall brand.
What is Fortinet?
Founded in 2000, Fortinet describes its mission as securing people, devices, and data. Its customers include businesses in sectors such as finance, retail, healthcare, and operational technology, as well as service providers and government organizations. In practical terms, its products are primarily designed for institutional and enterprise infrastructure rather than ordinary home-computer use.

Fortinet groups its portfolio under the name Security Fabric. That is a platform-level description of products spanning secure networking, unified Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), and security operations. It does not mean every product is one box or that every organization gets a complete integrated system by buying one item.

What does Fortinet sell?
Secure networking: firewalls and connections between locations
FortiGate is Fortinet’s next-generation firewall (NGFW) family. A firewall controls and inspects network traffic according to security rules; FortiGate is intended to do that for organizational networks. Fortinet offers FortiGate as physical appliances, virtualized software, and deployments for cloud environments. Fortinet’s secure networking range also includes Secure SD-WAN, which is used to connect and manage traffic between distributed locations. This makes the category relevant to organizations with multiple offices or branches, not just a company’s central data center.
Unified SASE: protected access beyond the office
Secure Access Service Edge, or SASE, combines cloud-delivered networking and security capabilities to support access by users, branches, applications, and cloud resources. FortiSASE is Fortinet’s cloud-delivered service in this area. The practical distinction is deployment: a physical firewall appliance sits in an organization’s environment, while a cloud-delivered access service provides security capabilities through a service. Which model fits depends on where users and applications are, the access policies required, and how the organization plans to operate the service.

Fortinet’s 2024 annual filing also lists FortiDeceptor and FortiDLP among its SecOps examples. Product names and packaging can change; the list illustrates the range of categories, not a promise that every named product is included with every other product.
How the pieces fit together
A useful analogy is a secured building: FortiGate controls and inspects traffic entering or crossing a network; networking products connect offices and devices; SASE extends protected access to people and applications outside the traditional office; and SecOps tools help the security team monitor activity and investigate potential problems. The analogy is only a guide. Each offering has its own scope, licensing, deployment choices, and integration requirements.

- Security operations: Tools for event management, automation, endpoint and network detection, sandbox analysis, and related threat response.
Fortinet’s corporate overview and product catalog describe a broader portfolio than these examples. The category labels explain the jobs products address; they should not be read as evidence that a single purchase supplies an all-in-one security system.

Fortinet is a cybersecurity and networking company, and FortiGate is its firewall family. Calling it only a firewall company leaves out its networking, cloud-delivered access, and security operations products. Conversely, Fortinet’s broad platform story does not make every product interchangeable: an NGFW, a SASE service, and a SIEM tool have different roles.

What should an organization compare before choosing a Fortinet product?
Start with the job to be done and the deployment model, rather than the brand or product family alone. These are useful comparison questions, not a performance ranking:

Fortinet’s business centers on securing and connecting organizational networks and supporting the teams that defend them. FortiGate is the clearest entry point for understanding the company, but the broader portfolio also addresses branch connectivity, remote access, endpoint and network detection, and security operations. A FortiGate appliance is a legitimate physical-product path for an organization evaluating enterprise firewall hardware, but a specific model’s configuration, support, and subscription requirements must be checked before purchase.
