Farmers Business Network (FBN) announced a $300 million capital raise on November 18, 2021, led by Fidelity Management and Research. The company said it would use the funding to hire more than 350 people over the following year and invest in technology and data science, farmer financial and sustainability services, and FBN Direct’s technology and supply chain. Those were plans announced in 2021; the available sources do not establish which were later completed.
How FBN said it would allocate the funding
FBN described the raise as long-term capital to support farmer profitability and services for family farms. Its announcement named four broad priorities:
- Hiring: more than 350 new team members over the next year.
- Technology and data science: increased investment to develop on-farm technologies and information for farmers.
- Financial and sustainability services: expanded services for farmers and other agricultural businesses.
- FBN Direct: continued investment in proprietary technology and the supply chain, with the stated aim of lowering prices and improving direct-to-farm delivery.
These are the company’s stated intentions, not a breakdown of the $300 million into specific dollar amounts for each area. FBN’s November 18, 2021 announcement did not provide that allocation.
What the plans meant for farm finance and sustainability
Financial services
FBN said it intended to expand financial offerings that could address land, operating, and equipment financing needs. The announcement listed ag land loans, equipment loans, margin loans, operating lines of credit, and Farmland Capital among FBN Financial’s products. The announcement describes the products and intended direction at that time; it does not establish their current availability or terms.

Sustainability services
FBN also identified Gradable, a service for grain companies and other commercial agriculture businesses, as part of its sustainability and financial-services work. The company framed this area as creating opportunities connected with sustainable practices. In a separate contemporaneous account, Successful Farming described Gradable as measuring and verifying crop carbon scores and connecting farmers with grain buyers seeking lower-carbon crops that could command higher premiums. That describes the role reported in 2021, not a guarantee of eligibility, a particular premium, or current program terms.
Operational expansion reported in November 2021
FBN’s announcement set a target of more than 350 hires over the following year. In a November 19, 2021 report, Successful Farming’s Bill Spiegel separately reported a plan to hire 300 people in animal health, agronomy, and seeds, along with support staff for warehouses and the corporate office. The report’s 300-person figure and the company’s more-than-350 target are distinct figures from different accounts; they should not be treated as the same estimate.

Successful Farming also attributed additional planned work to FBN co-founder and CTO Charles Baron. The reported areas included expanding the Community Builder program and logistics network, developing digital finance and insurance tools, adding fertilizer and animal feed products, and strengthening crop protection, seed breeding, biologicals, and robotics. These were reported plans, not confirmation that each product or initiative launched.
What FBN and ADM intended to explore
Successful Farming reported that ADM made an equity investment in FBN during the funding round and that the companies intended to explore broader collaboration. The areas described were:

The report presented these as potential areas of collaboration to explore in 2021, not evidence that all of them were implemented. Successful Farming’s November 19, 2021 report includes interview-based detail beyond FBN’s announcement.

The November 2021 materials explain the intended direction of the funding, but neither source establishes how much was ultimately spent on each priority, whether the hiring targets were met, or which planned initiatives were completed. FBN’s company announcement is the primary source for its broad priorities and more-than-350 hiring target; Successful Farming’s report adds operational detail and the separate 300-person hiring figure. Both are accounts of plans at the time, not proof of present-day offerings or results.
